GonzalezBrothers with Sarah Alexander, Nevada Hill and Bobby Taylor (Kettle Art, 9PM) Kicking off at 9pm, this all star cast of musicians will play on the last evening of the eNeRGy exhibit at Kettle Art, and it will be your last chance to pick up the accompanying book featuring the work of artists Sergio Garcia, Richard Ross, and Mark Nelson. There will be a book signing at 8:00 PM and music at 9:30 featuring the Gonzalez Brothers accompanied by Bobby Coaxe, Nevada Hill, and Sarah Alexander. Considering that these are some of the most extreme and unconventional local musicians currently playing, or musicians period, that I know of, it should be an expectedly intense performance and well worth your time.
Fungi Girls | Scoff | Electric Vengeance (Cleburne Skateland) Cleburne Skateland.... shit, I wonder what that place is like? I can just picture James Van der Beek saying "I don't want your life" in his fake Texas accent while a bunch of evangelical Christians skate around in circles wondering aloud whether any of tonight's bands feature any "queers." I hope they do, because that shit would be funny. Anyway, we first noticed Cleburne's Fungi Girls a few weeks ago when they were playing a show in Denton, and we really liked what we heard, like a lot. Like, take a listen to the insanely catchy lo-fi slop punk of "Into the Cosmos," available on their Myspace page. That song alone already makes me think that they could end up being one of my favorite bands in the area. I know this shit's in Cleburne, but it might be the best reason you'll ever have to go out there. Fun fact-- did you know that Cleburne had the exact same population as Dallas in 1900? Anyway, Fungi Girls. Keep your eye on them.
Uptown Fridays with Select (Zubar) Swedish Teens | Stymie | The Uptown Bums | Ian Bangs (Rubber Gloves) This is the Swedish Teens CD release party, but the Uptown Bums are the real highlight here.
Viking Moses | Golden Ghost | Daniel Bass (Muscle Beach, 907 Denton St.) Nice show for Muscle Beach this weekend. Viking Moses is one of those groups that actually pulls off clever, quiet experimental folk (take notes, Denton bands) with a sound that might remind listeners of Adrian Orange, Little Wings, and even the softer moments of Karl Blau. So basically, PacNW stuff with a touch of southern soul. The group first made a name for themselves in 2004 with an appearance on Devendra Banhart's Golden Apples of the Sun compilation, which came to be the defining document of what later became known as "freak folk." Fortunately, Viking Moses stands the test of time a lot better than their freak folkie Ms. Havisham, and seeing them at a small house like this is certainly the right way to do it.
Magnets | Eyes, Wings and Many Other Things (Mountain House, 5320 Tremont) This is Swiss House Evan Horn's new pad. The show is free, and guy usually has pretty good parties... even when the bands are a little... eh? Oh, and Eyes Wings and Many other Things? Worst band name of the week! However, they are clearly the better band on this bill.
Decemberfest feat. Gun Gun/Handbrake/Isaac Hoskins/Kaboom/Shiny Around the Edges/Rival Gang (Dan's Silverleaf): Shiny Around The Edges are the organizers of this annual showcase that includes baked goods from a group of folks that can barely restring a guitar. Just joking, Kaboom! Actually, most of the food last year was surprisingly great. Though this is a tightly packed show with bands going on at 9:30 sharp all the way until one in the morning, I trust that nobody but SATE front-couple Jenny and Mike Seman are more capable of getting this whole thing to run in a timely fashion. This diverse show boasts a good lineup with an equally good cause: The Denton Community Food Center. On a purely selfish note,I hope to see some Red Velvet or Hummingbird Cake but will probably eat one of everything no matter what. Schedule is as follows:
Art Conspiracy 4 with Sober | Mount Righteous | ATON | Chameleon Chamber Group (3011 Guiden Ln.) I wonder if the Observer will write a review of this show where they describe Mount Righteous as "joyous." To quote Bruce McCulloch, "FUCK HAPPY."
Terrible Twos | Wax Museums | John Barrett's Bass Drum of Death | The Uptown Bums (818 Hickory St., Denton) Detroit's Terrible Twos were described by someone in our comments section as "future wave synth punks," and that seems to make sense to me, even if it might underplay the group's garage influences just a bit, especially those found in the lead vocals (think Jay Reatard, etc.). The group has made quite a name for themselves both inside and outside of their native Detroit, making a rather big splash during SXSW and recently being invited to play at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit after touring with the Dirtbombs. Hailed as the next generation of Detroit Noise/Garage punk by their hometown media, the group's synth sound is certainly front and center in most of their material, but you can always hear that Detroit garage/upper midwest Proto-punk sound in their stuff. It's pretty refreshing and certainly worth seeing at a house show like this one with a great line up of local openers and the rather excellent John Barrett on the bill. This show is being put on for someone's birthday or something, so expect it to get crazy.
Young Doc Gooden | Billingham's Defense System (Fallout) Hey, do you live in Dallas? Are you a hipster? Are you single and thinking about trying to get laid tonight, preferrably with another hipster? Well, this might be the place for you my friend, and I only mean all this as an insult if you want it to be. Anyway, on a more serious note, Austin Brown, AKA Young Doc Gooden, will be leaving us permanently as he heads off for bigger and better things in New York this week, and tonight will be his last performance in the area as a Texas resident. Anyone who has been around Denton for the past year has seen the impressive level of success that Brown has had as a party promoter and DJ, so I'd assume that there will be a good number of people who might want to come out tonight and wish him farewell. And if you like what you hear tonight, you can start checking in at Fallout every Thursday, as BDS have started a new residency there.
THURSDAY The Tom and Judy Show (Bubble) 6-10 pm Judy Vetter and Tom Sale, a.k.a. Pinky Diablo. Bubble is a new space in Oak Cliff that sounds sort of like a rentable living room.
More Than This, Art Social (CADD Art Lab)5-8 pm At 7pm, John Pomara will speak with arts writer Janet Kutner. Prince William is spinning from 5-7pm. This show includes Anderson and Low, Scott Anderson, Frances Bagley, Scott Barber, Kevin Bewersdorf, Paul Booker, Candace Briceno, Trenton Doyle Hancock, Tracy Hicks, Terrell James, Tom Orr, Jennifer Rose, Carl Suddath, Takako Tanabe, Jackie Tileston, Erik Tosten, and Lizzy Wetzel.
Ben Aqua Artist's Talk(Centraltrak) 7pm Update: CANCELED Also catch the Vicious Pink exhibit up right now!
Felili Rincon | Paul Baker | Free Form Film Fest (The Cavern) The Free Form Film Festival (FFFF) is a traveling film fest, free of any strict scheduling or location parameters. Paul Baker is of course, known for the visual work he did with Sub Oslo, and might even bring out some people you usually wouldn't see at The Cavern. I can name a few. Felili Rincon currently resides in Brooklyn, but apparently has some DFW roots. Felili's rhythm section will include Brad Dale of Ishi, and Adam Pickrell, DJ and member of White Lotus Society.
Short Film Screening | Akkolyte | Vorvadoss (The Lounge) This is another multimedia show with a couple of great bands, an art show, and a short film entitled You All Fucking Deserve It. Sounds like a good time.
ADD: Wanz Dover will also be performing at The Lounge show. He has a pretty impassioned speech about Breakcore on his blog. Just click on his name.
(This is the first installment of Not New Music Tuesdays, a new feature by our new writer, Twin Cheeks. I know, right? We're having a contest for most immature nom de plume, and I think TC is winning so far. Anyway, TC will be doing this every week-- presenting full album downloads taken from a personal record collection that most of you couldn't even dream of amassing. I think many of you will be pleasantly surprised by the stuff you'll find here: a lot of it obscure, all of it good, and almost none of it recent. Most of these posts will NOT focus on local releases, but we thought we'd start things off this week with an old local punk compilation that contains some great stuff that you should really hear. Enjoy! --SR)
Ok. New column, old music. Maybe some of you have heard this stuff, maybe some of you haven't. Maybe some of you will like it, maybe some of you won't. Either way, it won't kill you to listen to it.
People seem to enjoy bitching about how local music sucks these days, so I thought we should take a listen to what was going on locally 30 years ago. Recorded at ESR Studios in 1978-79 and released in 1979, Are We Too Late for the Trend... compiled the best (or maybe the whole) of the dfw punk scene at the time. Good shit. --

Hey pals, the folks at Sneak Attack Media just gave us a pair of tickets to give away for tomorrow's Duran Duran show at Nokia Theater, and since this is all happening on such short notice, we're going to give them to the first person who emails weshotjrtix@yahoo.com with "Duran Duran" as the subject and a full name in the body. I actually can't wait for this show.
Deerhunter | Times New Viking | Nite Jewel(the Loft) Bradford Cox is one of those people that listeners seem to either love or hate based on his personality, or more specifically, his micro/indie celebrity image expressed via frequent message board and blogs posts. Thankfully, I really don't read music blogs anymore, and I certainly don't venture on to Cox's personal blogspot, so I really don't have any ammunition on the guy. What I do know is this-- Cox has been the main force behind two very solid records this year, which is more than you can say for just about anyone else in 2008-- I somehow ended up catching Cox's other band, Atlas Sound, three different times at SXSW this year, and I was quite glad that I did considering that they might have put out one of my favorite records of the year. Along with the first full length Atlas Sound release, Cox is also the main songwriting force behind Deerhunter's latest, Microcastle, which leaked this summer in a sea of controversy. Truth be told, the more melodic and straight forward parts of Deerhunter's recorded output is really where it's at with this band, and Cox has proven himself to be more of a natural when he goes down the shoegaze/60's r&b/dreampop route rather than the harsher, more experimental territory explored in the band's earlier work. Oh, and do show up early to check out Times New Viking, a band that we much enjoyed seeing when they played the We Shot JR/Strawberry Fields show last March. PLUS... I almost forgot that Nite Jewel will be opening this show at well. Give them a listen because they have become one of my favorite new groups of the year, with absolutely seductive vocals and beats that will get stuck in your head for days. Excellent stuff and well worth showing up early for (and this is coming from someone who NEVER shows up early).
Soul Glow Monday w/ Young Doc Gooden (Hailey's) This could very well be YDG's last Monday night gig at Hailey's, so if you ever wanted to see him, do it now.
