weekender

Ok Pals, listen up. We've been working on interviews and Melodica (our Saturday night show features Finally Punk, pictured right) and SXSW and lots of other stuff today, and these things have eaten up much of our time. We also have these annoying little things called jobs, which feature these annoying little things called bosses, who expect us to do this annoying little thing called work, which is why today's weekender is annoyingly short. However, links are below, and we decided we'd give you a weekend to decide what's cool on your own. Awesome! Here it is (if we missed anything, feel free to add a comment)

FRIDAY
Melodica Festival (Expo Park)
Of course, this is the main highlight of the weekend for a lot of people, and rightly so. You can get the full schedule by clicking on the Melodica Link, but I thought we'd share some highlights (three day passes are $25 or you can pay cover at individual shows)

Loop 12 (Avenue Arts) 840 and 950
Life Death Continuum (Avenue Arts) 1230
Silver Apples (Sloppyworld) 11
Spectrum (Sloppyworld) midnight
Light Bright Highway (Sloppyworld) 1am
Minc: whole line up is solid all night, featuring Dev79, Keith P, Central Booking, Royal Highnuss and Dragonman.
Record Hop (Amsterdam) midnight

Other stuff happening tonight:

Baby Dee | John Contreras | Alex Neilson/Paul Oldham | The Theater Fire (Arts 5th Ave, Ft. Worth)
An excellent show from the Metrognome Collective.

SATURDAY

Melodica We Shot J.R. Showcase feat. Finally Punk | Cry Blood Apache | Tree Wave | Medio Mutante | Zanzibar Snails (Amsterdam)
I'm really proud of myself for putting together such a completely kick ass line up! I should really be thanked for this. If you've never checked out Finally Punk but still somehow think you're cool, click up top there and learn all about why you'll be at this show tonight. Excellent quality all around, from sloppy, energetic punk to no wave/industrial sludge to harsh, rhythmic electro to the unique Tree Wave, I have to say that I pretty much rule. Oh, and the bands are good too. You can get in with a Melodica pass or pay the cover.

Other Melodica Highlights:

Yells at Eels (Avenue Arts) 9pm
Transona Five (Avenue Arts) 10pm
Farah (Fallout) midnight
The Great Tyrant (Sloppyworld) 10pm
Mundo and Lifted MC (Sloppyworld) 1045pm
Apendics Shuffle (Minc) 1130pm

OTHER STUFF:

Boats | I Resign | Hide and Secret | Vacation (715 Panhandle)

Seth Sherman | Fight Bite | Glass | Voyant | Angry Businessmen | Glass Gown | Fake Blood (Strawberry Fields)
I don't know why these dickheads had to schedule such a kick ass show on the same night as our kick ass show, but whatevs, we still love em. Or kinda like em. Anyway, this will be a great night at Strawberry Fields, and I'm sure a couple new faces will show up to check out Fight Bite, who recently received the approval of indie powerhouse blog Gorilla vs Bear. And he's right: it's pretty good stuff.

Car Stereo Wars | Killtronix (The Cavern)

SUNDAY

Melodica All Ages Show (Club Dada)
Many of the highlights from Saturday and Sunday will be playing this thing, and none of you underage geeks should miss it. Nor should you overage geeks for that matter. Starts at 4pm. Here are the bands playing.

Black Lips | Quintron | Miss Pussycat (the Loft)
Black Lips will also play a free show at Good Records at 4pm.

1:26 am a long ways up:

zanzibar snails have no axe to grind with anyone personally and in fact have no idea whatsoever what the Faux Fox guys even look like in civilian clothes. What we do have, like anybody else, are ideas and tastes of what we like and don't. Some of us are unafraid to express them. By the same token, we are also utterly unafraid to hear anybody's negative opinion of us, whether it be anonymously, face to face or any medium in-between.

to anybody who cited us as being a positive, you might want to check out our new full length CDr titled BROWN DWARF, it will be available at Strawberry Fields on Saturday, where we are playing, and in other local stores shortly thereafter.

Also in full objectivity I can't possibly be remiss enough as to not tell you how much ass the new Great Tyrant 7-inch/CDEP combo kicks and how thoroughly.

Thanks a ton to Mwanza for pulling this off succesfully....I don't give a shit about who wants to talk shit on any message board at all especially when drama was such a far off concept during all of last weekend's activities....Of course I guess the only bit of drama I knew about was what went down at Dada with the Great Tyrant(sorry guys!), but other than that every venue was packed and I heard no negative responses to any of the Festival other than opinions on bands and what not....fair enough. Thanks to everyone who helped pull this together. All shittalkers who think they have the real idea of what an ideal festival is made of need to go set up their own three day festival and make it run nearly as seamless as Melodica Fest did and I will pat you on the fuckin' back! On behalf of Yells at Eels and Akkolyte I'm telling you Wanz, we're here when you need us again....What a wake up call it all was(despite the amount of alcohol I consumed during it all)!! Peace bitches and Uncles thereof,

it was a really great weekend. it sort of broke the show funk i've been in for a few years. i missed alot of people i wanted to see (vorvadoss, zanzibar snails, silk stocking, koji kondo) but was introduced to violent squid (so good). and of course, akkolyte, sub oslo, and light bright were awesome. props to wanz and freeman for pulling it off.

melodica was the best thing for this music scene. long time coming. thanks to everyone involved into putting that shit on. even if you weren't into the music. the hang was fucking cool. and the music was almost at the utmost approval of the non-approval i just wanna hang vibe. and that fucking rules. people being comfortable and hanging out. wtf is better? you just knew that it was easy and special the whole time.
no one was getting anything out the whole thing which was great. mostly it was the musicians and fans getting exposed to all kinds of new and exciting shit that made things awesome.

Tommy's beard is older than most sound guys. I can't stand when sound people are yelling at me through the monitors. Setting up is stressful enough without all that.

During an average night something will go wrong with one of the band's equipment. It's usually a quick fix but it doesn't help when someone is pressing you.

I've heard another person from another band have the same complaint on the same night about the sound guy. The guys from Great Tyrant have played countless amount of shows and it seems that they probably walked off for good reason.

Melodica was a great experience for me and who ever was running sound at arts avenue did a fantastic job.

I am a huge fan to. I still think taking sides here is not the solution. Both sides could have handled this better. The DADA people are really good people and if you knew how much they helped us out with melodica you might think the same.

i swore to never comment on here regarding my own band, but i have to.

i understand he had instructions to run a tight ship. but number one, things were ahead of schedule. number two, we were not being difficult or taking a long time to set up, yet he found it necessary to needle us via the monitors. when daron approached him to explain that the show was ahead of schedule due to a cancellation (why we knew this and he didn't i have no idea) and we needed a little more time to fix a problem, the sound guy cut him off and yelled at him like a football coach to "move move move". the truth is, thats what did it. after that we had no interest in continuing. two of us have worked as sound guys, we know how it can suck and how hard it can be to keep things on schedule, but you dont talk down to people like that. if i witnessed him talking that way to another band i probably wouldn't have played.

we've apologized already to those who came hoping to see us and of course we always appreciate those who support us and the clubs who have us. we take full responsibility for our decision and any disappointment or anger it may have caused. if we're "evil scumbags" or not "a barrel of monkeys", so be it.

in the long run it doesnt really matter. we had a great weekend at melodica and this is the first show to go sour on us in the time we've been together.

and i was the one you witnessed ranting. i do that sometimes.

Wanz is correct.

Simeon arrived at Dada around 1 p.m. Sunday and the first concern he expressed to me was the show running on time so he could make it back to New Orleans. That's also why he set up all of his gear in advance so going on stage would require little down time.

Marc, Dada's sound engineer, was well within his rights to keep running a tight show time-wise. It's what I depend on him to do. Shows that run reasonably on time show a respect for patrons and a respect for all of the bands that are playing.

I knew that many of the acts on Sunday would have complicated set ups - akin to d numbers, tartufi, etc - that was why I offered bands the private far bar area for setting up equipment. Simeon and MOM in particular, knowing their set ups would be complicated, chose to arrive early and put together the majority of their equipment in advance, insuring that loading on to the stage and off would be more effective time-wise.

Marc may have lost his patience with Great Tyrant, but they weren't exactly a barrel of monkeys themselves. As for the "Fuck this place, fuck Dada" rant I witnessed, well, I chalk it up to frustration based upon equipment failure and communication problems between the band and Marc. In the furure, I suggest that they voice their concerns directly to me over a few drinks on my tab. Contrary to popular belief, we're not ogres here.

I was thrilled to have Melodica here at Dada. I met so many wonderful musicians and music fans. Everyone was incredibly wonderful and easy to work with. I was also impressed by the DIY attitude that many of the bands had regarding improvisational setups outside.

I take a lot of shit from the police and others for having all ages shows and I always have to weigh the financial risks of underage drinking at Dada. For the first time ever, since I've been doing all ages shows, every single person that came through the door on Sunday were more than happy to show me ID, more than happy to let me check backpacks and bags for booze. Every person that came through the door with an outside container was cool when I told them I needed to pour their beverage into a glass. I wish all of my all ages show ran as smoothly as this one.

I'm not able to get out very often and go to shows because I have an obligation to be at Dada for the bands that I book. I'm grateful to have been able to see bands I've never seen before, to talk to them, ask them questions and to interact with their fans.

So to the bands, the fans and to Wanz...thanks for giving Dada an unforgettable Sunday.

Thanks to everyone that came out. I just got the final numbers and it looks we squeekede by. John and I got most of our original investment back and everyone had a great time. The vibe so positive I thought people were gonna explode.

I am truly sorry for the Club Dada incident with Great Tyrant. There was some confusion in the schedule and Medio Mutante doing a no call/no show made a chaotic situation a little more confusing. Most of these bands rarely play Club DADA a he got confused. I told him to make sure we stayed on time at any cost. Simeon had a long drive to new Orleans and I wanted to make sure things ran on time. He was doing the job he was told to do. The new sound guy at Club DADA is a really cool cat and likes to play stockhausen, Faust,Can and avant garde films in between sets. That can't possbily be that bad of a thing. I honestly think both sides could have handled the situation a little better, but I am longtime friends with both sides so.........sorry to both parties.

outside of that the only bad thing that happend the whole weekend was my buddy ken and I getting harrased and manhandled by cops for walking down the street and asked(screamed at actually) If I had a crackpipe in my pocket. Easily the most fascist/racist bullshit I have ever had to dealt with.

I'm in total agreement about the whole playing of rock music in between sets.
The jarring, blaring of Asia's Heat of the Moment after Faux Fox was enough to give me a panic attack.
Too loud to talk to any friends, I had to get the heck out.

The Great Tyrnat had some keyboard problems. They also had an asshole, yelling at them like children, from the soundboard to "hurry up" and "GO, GO, GO!". The keyboard problem could have been fixed with a few minuets, but by that time, they were so pissed with the soundman's lack of patience and respect that they no longer wanted to play the show or the club. The soundman wasn't aware that Medio Mutanto had dropped off the bill and thought that The Great Tyrant was Medio Mutanto and was rushing them off the stage so The Great Tyrant would have more time to play. As soon as they were off the stage he yelled at The Great Tyrant to "get their shit on stage!", totally unaware of what band just got off the stage. The show was running ahead of schedule and the stage sat empty for abot 30-40 minuets, thanks to an impatient soundman. The Great Tyrant was there to entertain for free because they like to play music for people. The soundman was just there getting paid, just doing his job. Isn't part of that job knowing which band you are running sound for and making sure all the bands show up?

The Great Tyrant plays in Dallas again at The Doublewide on March 7th with Sean Kirkpatrick and Death Is Not A Joyride. The Doublewide has a very nice soundman named Jeff. I think they will actually play this show.

I hope someone passes legislation to ban rock music in between bands at rock shows. I fucking hate hearing it when I'm at a show. I actually wish they'd play ragtime 78's at a very low volume. It would be much less jarring.

Hearing anyone from Central Booking is a definite improvement over having to hear anything a sound guy at Rubber Gloves plays for instance. Post JC era, of course.

I don't know what was playing several visits ago, but it was some piano rock shit and it was ruining everything.

Other solution: Play "Return To The 36 Chambers" on repeat.

Tonight was just as good as last night - Zanzibar Snails, Yells At Eels, Faceless Werewolves, Farah, It's What We Get, Great Tyrant, and Sub Oslo were the highlights for me. Nice crowds at every venue again as well. And how you feel about being so wrong isn't irrelevant to me. C'mon, let me taste those tears, fuckwad.
