Now that some of the dust, figurative and otherwise, has settled around the local institution that was Secret Headquarters, thus begins the venue's legacy and its potential influence on future spaces, musicians turned venue owners, show bookers, sound people, and those who could probably be considered several of those things at once. The musician in such dual roles is not specific to SHQ, of course, but everything regarding the venue is unique due to the group of people that ran the place and their unusually welcoming attitude to noise, melody, beauty, ugliness, sincerity, plasticity, the most grandiose, the meekest, the well-meaning, the mean-spirited, everybody, everywhere, anywhere, locally, globally and beyond if they could reach. And therein lies the simultaneous tragedy and triumph of a place that will be one of the most warmly regarded memories for anyone who set foot there, even years from now. A place that tries the impossible of pleasing all of the people all of the time will ultimately always fall short in someone's eyes-- in this instance, the cliched specter of an uncompromising landlord looking for a reason to pull the plug. No surprise there, but what is surprising is the aforementioned pleasing of the people all of the time bit: They came closer than anyone. SHQ began on the opposite side of the building facing Hickory Street, replacing the Dallas bound Art Prostitute. Opening day was a surefire lineup of local favorites and all the usual faces of Denton's storied music community showed up, as expected. Many were skeptical that anything significant could fill such a void as that of the justifiably loved Art Prostitute. Secret Headquarters did the unexpected to ultimately silence any skeptics or detractors. The venue actually improved by living up to its name and shrinking, flipping its front entrance to the back of the building, and shunning any sort of actual sign or marquee. The physical transformation of the venue acts as a metaphor to the gentle way it guided rather than forced everyone to try a little harder to seek things out and give uncharted territory a chance. All the while it took some very challenging booking demands head on, and managed what was easily the most bafflingly diverse schedule week after week for sixteen months. Secret Headquarters didn't just book their friends, they didn't pander to local legends, nor did they shun them. This was an environment free of pretense, everyone on equal footing, where drunk frat types might be slam dancing with introverted library ladies, both of them enjoying it, and everyone being generally more accepting than they would out in their daily lives. Far fewer arms were crossed or dirty looks given under that roof in comparison to the average rock show, dance club or elsewhere in the area. It was what you wished a speakeasy was like if they still existed, with everyone putting aside all of their bullshit for a common desire. And though you could bring your own, the real draw was the privilege of seeing a performance in such a relaxed, noncompetitive, and friendly atmosphere. To put it simply, Secret Headquarters was a fun fucking place to hang out, even if you weren't into the bands on a given night. People would gravitate towards it from the square and surrounding venues, seemingly drawn by the attitude and the kindness as much as the music. There was often food around. Cupcakes, cookies, vegetable trays, alcohol and barbecue. People were always celebrating. The last time I was there, a just married couple was in the audience catching a show, hours after being wed. It was that kind of place. Not to look too much into my own prophetic prowess, but I recently lamented the fact that my long soured attitude towards local music had improved exponentially over the past couple of years, and how this unnamed "golden period" might be showing signs of waning, at least as we know it. In Denton especially, since 2005 or so, there has been a wealth of quality venues, bands, and shows. Bands move on, break up, people go to college, graduate, get married and on and on. That's a necessary part of the cycle. Secret Headquarters' departure from local music will be a little harder of a blow to absorb. When We Shot JR put on its second ever show back in January, the experience with SHQ from all angles couldn't have gone more smoothly. Over the rest of the year, SHQ started putting in overtime and actually hosting shows that had been shutdown at other DIY places, sometimes well into the extreme late hours that other venues legally can't touch. When our most recent show at The Fra House was somewhat expectedly shut down, they were there to pick up where it left off, staying open until three in the morning and still finishing its obligation to an Indiewriter.net benefit. This altruistic type of phantom booking probably put an unfair strain on the staff at times, but has solidified the reputations of venue and staff alike indefinitely. SHQ through sheer unconventionality was straight-ahead rock venue, punk rock hangout, late night jazz club, singer songwriter opry, drag show catwalk, art gallery, psyche happening, grindcore pit, and even once hosted a toy show. I saw just about every type of show I enjoy going to there, and if a band I liked was playing there, I knew it would be the ideal setting. Recently, Secret Headquarters had really started to hit a stride by becoming a necessary ally in local hardcore, punk and garage shows of the type that 715 Panhandle throws, and by hosting more and more national touring acts and international acts as well. I consider myself very lucky to have been at the first show, the last show, and so many unforgettable moments in between. I loved Secret Headquarters as much as is humanly possible or healthy for someone to love a beat up old building with an alley full of drunks behind it. There are many fans, bands, artists and musicians alike that walked out of that place spoiled by the joy of being there, and I would just like to counter the understandable pain and bitterness that accompanied its hastened demise last week and feel free to leave a comment doing the same: Thank you, SHQ. |

I want to say thank you to DL for the piece you wrote. It summed up alot of my own feelings. I have been lucky enough to know the folks responsible fo SHQ. I did'nt get out to many of the shows, but it is great to know that there are people in the community who CARE and want to share their enthusiasim for what they love with others. I have been, and all ways will be, so very proud to have been a part (all be it, a vey small part) of what SHQ was. It was a place where people tried, and succeeded to fill a need in their community. I am greatful that there are people like these, in the town that I have grown to love. A quote from my mother (who has been a silent supporter of the HeadQuarters)"I think Jesus loves The Secret HeadQuarters". I will end with two quotes from Perry Farrell, "They may say, those were the days But anyway, you know, for us these are the days" and simply "Thank you Boys"

2 confessions later, isn't that good enough? Oh no, still gotta talk some more shit and do some more blaming. Geez, people just never grow because they are too bored. must have source of drama. REally, book a show, start a band, write a book, anything would be better than this. |

actually urn you are assuming things too. certain people HAVE NOT talked to the shq guys. it is none of our business, but that does irk me. everyone thinks that shit has been worked out, when in fact, it has not. |
| | |
| urn says.. |
| | |
You're exactly right. I want no accountability because it's not my concern, nor yours. Like I said, the SHQ people are tolerant and connected to some of the people named in all of this.
If you read any of Cody or Scott Porter's responses to any of this, you can see that they've discussed some of this with the people involved and, though some elements of the aftermath sucked, they have accepted whatever they had to say and moved on. The same will go for Sam or whoever else is implicated in all of this. They will most likely be forgiven, no matter their degree of participation. But none of our incessant prodding for a confession or apology is going to speed up the process, so it should just be dropped.
I liked when I got to play at SHQ for the Indiewriter.net benefit just before the WSJR Awards show got moved over there. I stuck around and got to see so much that the scene had to offer in one night, and I walked away a happy man. Then there was this other night a few weeks after that when I just happened to be in Denton. I wandered into the alley of SHQ to see what was going on and a show had just ended. I just hung out there and talked to some friends and sipped upon my broughten beer. That was nice. Then the place closed down. I felt bad. |

Um, I agree with a lot of that, but undeniable is the part about accountability and people looking like shitheads for not taking responsibility for this comminity damage (no matter what the true extent of it was or wasn't). Half of them did, half didn't. Of that other half half, one half has been silent ... well not realy silent but yeah just silent on this subject, slightly offputting ... the other half walking around with a "fuck you myannnnn" attitude which is just embarassing because he's generally a good guy.
Headscratching character study going on here. |

Why does everyone want a confession anyways? Will it ease your minds that every participant has been accounted for? If Sam was involved, is all of your "sadness and anger" about the situation going to suddenly dissolve when you discover that a person who has without a doubt proven to be supportive and active in the Denton scene can, in one instant, be ousted as some sort of traitor? What are you after, exactly?
At this point, this is all between the SHQ folks and those that have spoken up. It's all been discussed and probably smoothed out without all of you knowing about it. Those SHQ folks are some tolerant people. It doesn't have to be all revealed on a message board or this comments section to let everyone know that all is well. It's really none of our business and everyone's acting like paparazzi or investigative TV magazine journalists.
It sucks SHQ isn't going to be around, but it was done for at the end of the year anyhow, so if you feel so strongly about how you have been wronged as a Denton citizen or DIY venue supporter that it has been taken away from you a few months too early, talk about the good things that happened there. DL started this on such a great note, and it turned to mudslinging again. Such a shame. |

Dear 1:33 PM
I don't know why Wanz is being talked about. I wish we could have maintained long enough to get the Good Sons, but we couldn't. He is being dragged into it for the same reason you are talking shit about us. People try to do a thing, and so that makes them a target. Same 'ol same 'ol.
We did over-react. We have already said over and over in public that we don't consider "The Incident" vandalism after we found out some details from some of the folks involved. Should they have constructed a cross on top of the paint spill? Should they have called us or knocked on the door? Fuck it! We have mended bridges with most involved and have admitted that our own cluelessness contributed majorly and most importantly to our demise. That's what you'll find us moping about over a beer while the rest of the world finds something else to talk about.
There were three things at the end of the day that led to our shutting down, regardless of any opinions that you may hold. All of you are all right, and all wrong.
1. We never paid rent on time and never got our cash ducks in a row. We are simple "jock rockers" and I don't even know how to use one part of my brain for anything that "smart" people can do effortlessly. If the venue had been in a cheaper spot, or at our house with lower overhead, we might have kept going. Who the hell knows? 2. The guy that ended up acting as our landlord had issues with us, our crowd, and our complete inability to make him happy. He was right about all of it. 3. That same guy is a very "religious" man and since he was already laying the pressure on us, certain aspects of the "vandalism" pushed him over the edge. He talked the LEAST about the paint. He got angry, got up in Cody's face (in front of Cody's wife and kid) accused Cody of all manner of crimes and got more and more strange. That's before the weird calls at work and the random illegal pop-ins. He's the dude that found it that Sunday morning. Why was he there? Because all he ever did was snoop around, looking to call the cops on YOU because he smelled pot. And he started leaning on us hard. I got a job, dude. I don't need that shit.
If only two of those things, any combo of only two, happened all at the same time, we would have had no problem. The convergence of all 3 created the point of no return. You are a boob if you think otherwise. A boob.
Have you ever been in a relationship that ended mutually, with great pain? Have you ever decided that you had dished out enough abuse on yourself and your partner and slowly backed away, knowing full well that something was about to give and there was nothing you could do about it? That's how it ended. It was an obvious agreement made with threats of legal and physical weirdness. You bet your ass it had to end, right there, in front of that cross, with that fucking weirdo intimidating us and our friends and gleefully rubbing his hands at the prospect of us no longer scumming up his building come November 1 so he could rent our space to the Hoohka Bar. It didn't matter that we were bringing in an established legal businessman to help us straighten up... Landlord was hating us. And the feeling was mutual.
You think we saved ourselves from looking like a failure? You are watching a different scene play out, because I feel like a failure everyday about all of this. I feel like we were run off/gave up and that my tail will never again rise up from between my legs. I feel like I let people down. I feel like I fucked up the best thing that ever happened to me. Press and street cred? Did you even read what DL wrote? He didn't even mention our names or our bands. Nobody really has. We turned down interviews with every local print and blog entity. You see any quortes floating around? The UNT paper got one blurb from us, the night it all went down, and then we decided to go silent. Enough already. You fuckin' turd. Because you know full well that it was never about our bands. Our bands and "street cred" suffered greatly through all of this. As well as our personal relationships, pocket books, credit, and self-esteem. Self-serving? Jesus. How? Help me find a way to explain this to myself, where the most recent SHQ related moment in my life is responding to a person (who I absolutely must know in the real world, duh.)accusing me of spending the last year and half and all of my time and money on a little dump of a room that could never get above the level of Almost Collapsing On Top Of Us for sinister reasons.
Yes, the evil plan worked. We have achieved the greatest shits ever. We took all of the money, we did all of the drugs and chicks, our bands are now world famous, and we are carried on the backs of lesser mortals everywhere because we opened a storefront to play HALO.
Man, we even made our shows fucking FREE for a while. But like in a totally self-serving manner, so, you know, busted.
Hemphill and Tinnitus keep it going because they are awesome. What's that got to do with you kissing my ass?
It was fun raping Denton and our friends. Thanks for the memories. I'll be on my island, laughing at you, and wondering how we can fuck you over next time, sucker.

Cliques, Wanz.
The closing of SHQ had nothing to do with cliques and politics. Nor does an opinion on The late great Argo. So, by mentioning cliques and politics in a thread that has nothing to do with either one, you are summoning the third head of the hydra that you know so well... Drama. |

sorry 4:42...I mean Douche. That is not me. I try to stay out of the Denton Soap Opera nowadays. Too much drama for my taste. I just like to make music.
Clicks and Politics. Not for me. |

Well, yes, Wanz... I mean 4:34. In the history of the universe there were places that other people considered their favorite. So good job on that. |

When I worked on Sunset they did have anchovies. We would also drizzle the juice from the can all over the pizza cause we hated touching that crap. If they do have them I hope you like them alot. Little fish=gorss |

I just saw on Denton Rock City that Scott and Cody are already going to be up there with a powerwasher tonight. I'm sure Scott would love to talk about how much you hate him. |

Or if you want to fight i'll be up there around 8.
I hope we get 300 posts this time. |

Least elitist place ever. A band I was in thought we had a show there one night. No one knew what was going on. They let us play with what I would assume would be never hearing/meeting us before. A shq band/jam type thing was supposed to happen and I don't think they did it so we could play. All that happened was a friend mentioned to one person in the band that we should play, we were never supposed to. This was when it was in the front room, details hazy. Very close to that.
SHQ = teh shit |

This was a great community space. Good place to see some great acts, take your baby, watch documentaries, even have a birthday party. Solid people ran this. Damn shame it had to close. |
