Those of you who were around here last year know that we had a policy during the playoffs: no posts after a Mavs loss. One of the reasons we did this was because we knew a Mavs loss would cause our writing to suffer: essentially, we were afraid that we'd jump to irrational conclusions about the games because we were too pissed and/or drunk to calmly analyze what we had just witnessed.

And frankly, despite my best efforts, I'm starting to think that we might have to adopt that policy again this year. After all, there are a few things we need to remember before we start talking shit: the Mavs were consistently the best team in the NBA this season. They won 67 games, went on multi double digit winning streaks, and basically seemed to come through whenever and however they needed in order to win, often dominating even the NBA's best teams in the process. The Mavs were one of the deepest, most talented and disciplined teams in the NBA pretty much every night they stepped out on the court, and it would be insane to think that Golden State, an 8th seed that has played terrible on the road all year, would be able to beat the Mavs in a seven game playoff series, especially since the Mavs have been so focused on winning a championship all year long. These are the kinds of things that we might tend to overlook if we started posting every time the Mavs lost, and it really isn't fair.

Instead of having faith in the NBA's best team, we might, for example, get too hung up on the fact that the Mavs came out in game 1 with no fire, drive, or sense of urgency. Or we might spend too much time talking about how Dirk looked limp, timid and unconcerned throughout the whole game, or how Golden State seemed to know how to get him rattled from the start, causing him to shoot a dismal 4-16 from the field. Or we might go on and on about the fact that the Mavs, one of the NBA's deepest teams, was only able to get 4 points from their bench, including absolutely nothing from Jerry Stackhouse, who should be a serious contender for sixth man of the year. Or we might incorrectly focus on the fact that the Warriors, despite not playing their best basketball, were able to control the tempo and feel of the game all night, and didn't seem to look nervous or intimidated at any point as they maintained control pretty much throughout. Or we might waste our time wondering if Nellie, who is out for blood against Mark Cuban and the Mavericks organization, might just know enough about Dirk, Avery, Del, and the rest of the team to expose all their weaknesses on such a regular basis that even if the Mavs do win this series, the rest of the NBA will have a blueprint on how to take them down. Or we might just pointlessly worry about the fact that over the past two seasons, the Mavs have not been able to beat the Warriors under pretty much any circumstances (including their last six meetings), which is quite problematic since they are presently better than they've been at any other point during that stretch.

You see? These posts are just a downer, and quite frankly, we're probably allowing our anger to get the best of us. The Mavs are the best team in the NBA, and they just had an off night tonight. Thats all. And there is no WAY they could lose in the first round to a mediocre team like Golden State. Right? Right?

Well, when the Stars had their victory parade, all that happened was a bunch of stupid fucking people looked from their volvos and asked what was going on.

The Mavs represent all that is wrong with Dallas. And I hate the Maverick fan. God I hope they get swept.

And yes, we certainly don't live in Scotland. Even if there is a riot here, it's usually quite tame compared to the shit that goes on at some football games in Europe.

the lessons that we learned from that article on the 1993 cowboys parade are the following:

1. there will probably be more police on hand as to not be "badly outnumbered" again because cities tend incorporate lessons learned from previous riots in their parade planning.

2. if you are a young person and a cop tells you to move and you choose not to, you may get hit with a nightstick.

again, i'm actually really interested in this discussion and i totally see and respect your opinion. i just think that in a state with a death penalty fetish and a disenfranchised poor urban youth population, a parade's the last thing you need to worry about as far as violence. the parking lot at club dmx every weekend is WAY worse.

I don't get upset about people that like music AND sports. I just really do think that sports can have a big effect on a society's crime rate. I really do wonder whether or not a city is more or less violent once one of their teams has won the championship. It could be less. It could be more. I just think it's interesting.

18 Are Injured as Violence Mars Football Rally in Dallas

At least 18 people were injured and two dozen arrested today as violence broke out among groups of teen-agers in the downtown area, where a crowd estimated at 400,000 had gathered to watch a parade and a rally celebrating the Dallas Cowboys' victory in the Super Bowl.

Most of the fighting occurred about half a mile from the parade. Some gunfire was reported, and bottles were thrown. Television reports showed bands of youths chasing and attacking individuals. In one case, a young woman was seen being punched, falling to the ground and being kicked in the head at least twice.

Badly outnumbered police officers, trying to disperse pockets of the crowd, used their nightsticks on young people who refused to move.

I love how people get so upset about people that like music AND sports. Like sports are really any different than music. Because when taken down to it's purest form, it's all entertainment.

And I stand by what I said at 2:13 PM. If Carrot Top was elected president I would be angry at the PEOPLE who VOTED for him.

insofar as golden state is concerned, this is only the beginning...............

yeah because i'm pretty sure that given a few beers and a playoff victory, most of the people reading we shot jr who are also mavericks fans would totally pummel innocent citizens into a bloody pulp.

i don't live through the mavericks players and their victories. it's fun to watch. it's fun to have some sort of vague civic pride. no one who is posting about getting more points in the paint is going to pound car hoods with their fists if the mavs win or lose.

guess what? a guy got beaten and paralyzed at an old 97's show at gypsy. i never heard anyone saying that old 97's fans were dangerous. there's meatheads and idiots everywhere and in every possible situation. no one is going to make you watch sports but i've been to enough mavs games to tell you that foam fingers and lots of "duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude!!!!!!! woooooooooooooohoooooooooo!!!!!!!! MVP!!!!!!!!!!!" is pretty much the standard celebratory tradition.

oh yeah and who the fuck doesn't like people who voted for bush but thinks he's a pretty ok kind of guy? i hope that was ironic. if a riot does happen, here's to hoping bush is in the "stompee" demographic.

Actually amandacobra, there were circles of people literally STOMPING on innocent people's HEADS. I believe it was either 92 or 93. It was on the news...probably the nation wide news. I remember feeling really lucky that I didn't go to the parade because we were going to skip school and check it out.

I feel that egos get inflated when the local sports team suddenly starts winning games....as if the team actually represented the people of the town. "Dirk Nowitski is a winner, and SO AM I!" You should have been in L.A. when The Lakers 3-peated back in 2001. It was fucking scary. Imagine walking down Sunset Blvd. next to 300 deadlocked cars and they are ALL honking their horns and beating on the hoods of their cars. It wasn't fun. It was annoying and the definant possibility of riot(in a town infamous for its riots) was just a little bit terrifying.

And I don't hate sports....just the people that support them. :)

Really? Umm, I think there were probably some guns shot in the air, maybe some cars overturned and some fistfights between gang members at the victory parade. I don't seem to recall some sort of Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome kind of scene.

Are you really scared they're gonna mess up Victory Park? Yeah imagine the carnage at Ghost Bar when the chairs start flying.

I hope the Mavs lose. I think this is an important question to ask: Will the crime rate in Denton/Dallas/Ft. Worth RISE or FALL if the Maverics win the championship? Remember when the Cowboys won the Super Bowl and there was a huge riot at the Cowboys parade? Yeah. People were getting their heads stomped in in the name of victory.

I can only hope it all ends now.

i am actually calming down now after a night that basically consisted of a long string of obscenities hurled in the mavs direction. i agree that game 2 will be the game that tells us whether or not avery has any ideas about how to stop golden state in their tracks.

or at least baron davis. how about maybe just slowing him down a little? baby steps. the absurdity of talking about the DALLAS MAVERICKS having to really step it up to beat the team that scraped into the playoffs by one game is still making me dizzy.

i'm actually wondering if the mavs may not be able to beat the warriors. we'll see. it'll be more clear after game 2.
