Have to be brief today... Kaboom | Opposites Attract | Christian! Teenage Runaways (J & J's Pizza)
Really hoping to catch Kaboom tonight. Their overdriven sound, frantic yelps and dynamic rhythm changes should make for a good live show. Speaking of good live shows, this is your second chance in as many nights to see Christian! Teenage Runaways, a band that never plays the same set twice and makes every show seem like an event as opposed to just phoning it in for another gig. Opposites Attract are another band I've been meaning to see, with some pretty crazy melodramatic vocals and trashy garage rock backing tracks. 80's Night with DJ G (Hailey's)Lost Generation with DJ Wanz Dover (Fallout Lounge)Sober (Zubar)
Playing funk & hip hop with no cover. |

"In '90 Fugazi played in a parking lot or field or something and Last Rites opened." Yes, you got the facts straight. Congratulations, you're a budding Fugazologist. However, you might want to work on your reading comprehension. You seem to fixate on the word "field." |

You're right 8:16 AM. I did read that in Our Band Could Be Your Life. So? Am I wrong? I didn't say I was at the show, I just wanted to get the facts straight. "They played in a field...." Right. |

Well, 8:10 just totally looked it up in Our Band Could Be Yor Life. Memory cells may not be as reliable but they are fffn REAL!
Andrew ... maybe you were the lucky Mad Hatter I barfed on at the Toadies/Funland/Slowpoke show in 91!

Thanks for the correction, 8:10. I didn't go to that show but heard about it from friends, and it's been many years. Hence the "parking lot or field or something." Turns out it was "or something." Other than that, I'm pretty sure the rest of what I wrote is accurate. Either way, though, thanks for setting it straight. |

I saw Ian MacKaye drinking a Coke and chastized him for it. How DARE he endorse such a filthy corporation...and such a killer of a drug. What a dick.
If you took this seriously you are retarded. |

No, Fugazi didn't play in a field. It was a warehouse in Dallas, and no one could go in because of fire regulations, so there were something like 900 punks all moshing outside while Fugazi just cranked it and played anyways. It was fucking legendary.
If you're going to write a book on here, please make sure to get the facts straight. Thanks. |

MC,
I think the Fugazi, Wayward Girl, Bedhead show at the Bomb Factory was in '91 or '92. I remember hearing that Ian McKaye told Kelly Keys, the owner of Direct Hit Records who booked it, that he "wanted to see some women on that stage." Wayward Girl had very recently started up in Denton so they got the show along with Bedhead, whose earliest 7" singles were on Direct Hit. The main singer of Wayward Girl at the beginning was a 16-year-old who was way into the riot grrl thing. The rest of them were more college girls having fun playing, I think.
In '90 Fugazi played in a parking lot or field or something and Last Rites opened. The time before that was in the FW club a different Kelly owned before Madhatter's in '88 or '89. At that show, Fugazi actually played before a new, Pixies-esque Fort Worth band called the Toadies because it was a school night and they didn't want "the kids" to have to stay out too late. |

DL ... the Wayward Girl show was like 1990 ... I know because even I (ageist?) was too young to get out to Dallas for that one. The Bomb Factory show with the "shoe in Ian's face" incident was 93/94 or so I think.

Why do you call people who might be somewhat mentally slower than you "retards", 4:12 PM? I'm hardly comfortable with the retard, though it is in fact a word with a few different definitions, one being necessary for music(retard: a slacking of tempo). But calling people what many refer to as mentally retarded "retards" is just lower than low. Picking on them is even lower. Why not just make fun of rape victims, 4:12?

Look. In my humble(cough,cough..)opinion, The Christian! Teenage Runaway's are good people(and great friends I might add) that are simply trying to have fun. I see Leanne and Julie and Sasha perform with these HUGE smiles on their faces all the time, and I KNOW they are genuine smiles since i've known the girls for several years. If their music isn't your thing, then whay the HELL do you have to comment about it? Why can't you just go find something you might enjoy/do something creative or positive with the time you spend on here instead of bashing people for trying to have fun and chasing their dreams?
I think that if you have something bad to say about any band on here, it probably means that you are a performer and you just want to smear every other act out there in order to make yourselves look good. Don't do that, because it just doesn't work that way. If you enjoy what you do, then you won't have to worry about hurting others reputations, because your reputation would be so good for being a solid act that......man......do you see what i'm saying?
"Attacking a creative venture is like putting on a sheet of armor and challenging a banana split." -Vonnegut
I hope everyone on here can be more respectful/tactful in the future(myself included). Have a nice night!

No really, I agree with whoever made that ageist statement. It's all over this blog. Stupid statements like "you must be in your 30's if you remember that" or some such nonsense. Get over your little hang ups. Hating on music from the past because it's in the past? It's stupid. "The 90's are over"???????????? Did you really write that and haven't you written it repeatedly? "You must be getting up there if you were at this show", what the hell is that supposed to mean? No. We're all suspended in formaldehyde you pretentious dill. No ones getting any older and only the kids who are still playing with building blocks (and lightbulbs apparently)know where it's at. You do a great job contradicting yourself in the same paragraph you claim to not be an elitist prick. This blog is for bored morons about bored morons who have to see their name in print on a daily basis and written by those morons friends. Off switch now. |

They are getting overhyped on this blog which may end up hurting them more than helping while they are still honing their craft."
What makes something riot grrl? Political lyrics? They have none. The fact that they are women? Big fucking deal. The early 90's are over. Get over it. As far as overhyping something, perhaps you're giving us more credit than we deserve.
quote: "I saw this years ago with Wayward Girl. Denton's original riot grrl band. They ended up doing shows with Tiger Trap, Bratmobile ,Bikini Kill and a bunch of other crappy bands that hid their lack of talent behind the whole GRrrrrrrl schtick. Bedhead opened up for these girls opening for Fugazi at The Bomb Factory. To this day they are still mostly remembered as the crappy girl band that opened for Fugazi. They eventually got better, but it was already a bad joke by then."
Thanks for the history lesson. You must be getting up there if you were at this show. That was 1995, I believe. I'm not so young myself but a lot has happened in music between then and now. Unfortunately it seems that's right around the time a lot of people (my age especially) stopped paying attention.
quote: "Christian! Teenage Runaways would be wise to avoid the elitist attitude of the riot grrl scene and to avoid buying into being overhyped"
Should they join your elitist scene were you constantly mention someone's gender as a way to dismiss the music they make and also write it off as part of the first musical movement involving women that comes to your mind, regardless of whether or not it's accurate? How's that elitist scene working out? Unfortunately, I hear it's pretty crowded. The strangest thing about your statement is that it wouldn't even make sense ten, twelve or fifteen years ago. You must have been just as short-sighted then. |
