Not the greatest weekend for music, but some solid stuff going on here and there. I again have to be a bit short today... guess I just can't get my shit together on Fridays. Anyway, we'll have the lists about an hour or two earlier starting next week, which will hopefully help a bit.

FRIDAY

Tonight you can start the evening off with the Evangelicals, who are playing a free in store at Good Records at 6pm. I guess you better hurry considering that you're probably reading this at 5:00. Anyway, Evangelicals have put out one of the most interesting psyche pop records of the year, and it also happens to be one of the most fun to listen to. And since its free, you might as well trust me.

Drop the Lime | DJ Mundo/ Keith P/ Tiny MC (Sons of Hermann Hall)
This should be the place to be tonight. Drop the Lime is surely a touring DJ that is worth your time and trouble to see... his influences are all over the place, and the beats are insane. You can click here to read Central Booking's take on the night, and you'll also find a link to an excellent new Drop the Lime mix tape. I don't have much info on Mundo and Keith P, aside from the fact that they seem to be interested in uk garage and 2step, meaning that they should be a solid opener as well. I've never been to a dance show at Sons, and I'm guessing it will be... interesting? Yeah, thats the ticket. This show will surely be the most fun you could possibly have tonight.

Also, Strawberry Fields in Denton will be hosting a screening of the excellent bio pic The Devil and Daniel Johnston. I highly recommend it. And apparently, a shitload of other people do too. Starts at 9.

SATURDAY

DJ Shadow will be doing an instore at Good Records starting at 2:30pm. I've heard various stories about his good records appearance. Some say that it is simply an autograph session, and others say that it is a full instore. Either way, I heard they'll have free beer, so I'm sure it will be worth it. You can also catch Shadow later on Saturday night at the Gypsy Tea Room with Lateef the Truth Speaker.

Jose Gonzalez (Gypsy Tea Room)
Anyone that tries to tell you that Jose Gonzalez is anything but a brilliant songwriter is completely full of shit. He gained a lot of attention late last year with his cover of The Knife's "Heartbeats," which prompted a lot of people to pick up his record and discover that just about every song on it is absolutely fantastic. Everything he does has been done a million times before, and he's still fucking great. His music is soft, quiet, sad and hollow sounding, and yes, he's actually able to pull all of those things off without sound like a douche. In fact, he sounds absolutely brilliant more often than not.

Magnolia Electric Company | Bottomless Pit | Tre Orsi (Rubber Gloves)

Mad Happy | Wanz Dover | Beauregard | 1337 Geek Beat/ DJ Stephen R (Bell House; at the Corner of Bell and Summit off Lower Greenville)
This show is going down at Stephen R's house off lower Greenville. Its three bucks to get in, and they will have two kegs for your consumption once you've paid your way inside. I'm sure there will be dancing too. Just mapquest the interesction above, drive to it, and you'll find it.

Saturday Night at SHQ might have been the most fun I've had doing absolutely nothing in a long time. They got a couch now, and some new chairs, free food, lots of booze, surprise impromptou sets from good acts. The only thing missing was a good breakdance troupe. Get on it, you fuckers!

Cool, Jose Gonzalez at the Tea Room. That's one smooth and melancholy cat. I'd do 'em.

OK, not really. But his music is pretty at-the-moment hip.

I know this is a throwback, but I feel I need to reset the site at this point, if possible.

If you haven't already, please go back and read Defensive Listening's piece on the Touch And Go festival and get back with me to what's going on this weekend, or any other weekend, for that matter.

I didn't even get to go, and DL's review has me so excited/not excited about what I could possibly go and see that would make me THAT passionate about music again. I remember that feeling, but I can't recall how long ago it was that it happened. And that's sad to me.

I hate being attatched to my old CD collection. I don't want to be listening to the same things I did in high school. I mean, I want to, because I love them, but I don't want to be listening to them, or something from before my time, exclusively, and thinking "WOW! This is fucking it! Nothing will top this." But sadly, I think that's where I am. I keep trying my damnedest to listen to these bands I keep hearing about, and all I can hear is what I liked about their predecessors in them, just not done as well.

I'm not of the mind that everything's been said and everything's been done, so why bother, so I depend upon myself and others to step up to the challenge and see what else we can find. I don't claim to shed my influences, and I don't expect anyone else to either, but there's still a way to explore what's already there and not have to dress up in its clothes and adopt its mannerisms.

We all know what we like and don't like. That's why we come here. To read about and tout our favorites and tell why someone else's are intolerable.

Thanks a ton Defensive Listening for nudging along the incredible cynic/optimist I strive to be that constantly reinforces my impulse to enthusiastically stick my toungue out and make sharp barfing noises when I see what I could look forward to if I only ventured out.

Here's some free stuff going on in Denton

-Tonight (Friday):

There's a free house show with some folk bands:

"715 Panhandle Tonight, getting started around 6 pm lasting until whenever? So show up and stay however late you want. Bring your own food or alcohol if you want, but be respectful of the house...'cause it's beautiful---

Run, walk, ride your bike, pogo stick it out to this house show...

Featuring:
Daniel Folmer
The Eastern Sea
Miss Celia
Sparlin, Jessels
My Son The Crapstronaut
Angry businessmen
Kempster Funk Poultry Band
Jesse Gage"

-Then tomorrow (That's Saturday) there's some stuff going down at the Secret Headquarters located at 210 E. Hickory (Where art prostitute used to be) Here's the details on that:

This Sat from 6-10 SHQ is opening its doors to you John Q Public (or Joni Q Publicette) and asking for your assistance in making SHQ what we want it to be. Or what it needs to be. Which is an arts/music resource that our community can be proud of.

We've been opened four months now and are going forward with ambitious plans that are to make SHQ a bigger part of the arts/music scene (omigod not THAT word!) around here.

We'll be cooking out and providing free hot dogs and refreshments and the providing entertainment for the evening (either us juggling or a live musical act, more TBA) so please come by, say hey, and do what you can. That's all we can ask.

We need donations of various kinds.

Some things we could use-

Books
Magazines
a Couch
Coffee table
Chairs
any types of shelves/bookcases
any type of music/mic cords
extension cords
a lamp
PA equip (working or not)
painting or cleaning supplies

If you live in Denton, we'll be glad to come pick anything up.

and yes donations of the money kind would also be vastly appreciated. It's a bit of a kick to our ego to ask that you donate some of your hard earned money but the man hasn't made it easy to start a small business around here. All we can promise is that any and all donations go straight into SHQ and putting on events that we can all enjoy.

This is a one time deal but we could use your help.

Please repost if you can.

And please stop by, even if to just say hey.

there will be people playing, including:

People that more than likely will be doing some songs: Spitfire Tumbleweeds, Ashley Cromeens (From Record Hop), Cody (From medicine Window), Rob G. (From Birth to Burial), Tex Winters (From Sarah Reddington), Chris welch (From Pinebox Serenade), hopefully some solo Jax, solo Adub, JC?... WHOEVER! Bring your toys... VERY casual, no schedule, just come relax with us from 6 to 10...

thanks,
shq

I promise that'll be a lot of fun.

Bring your own beer to both these things and meet some nice people

Love,
Tex Winters

That Jose Gonzalez shit is pretty fucking good. That guy's voice is excellent. I can't tell if he's got a double vocal recording or using some kind of vocal effect on these recordings. The guitar playing is pretty damned good too.
