it list : thursday

I'm filling in for Stonedranger on some daily duties around here for maybe the next week or so. Please send me show info etc. to defensivelistening@yahoo.com. Thanks.

1. Mix Tapes and Baby Fights | Man Factory | Mathstorm and more (Rubber Gloves)
Man Factory and Mathstorm are the two bands playing tonight. Both bands are very poppy and their performances will sandwich the standup/sketch comedy that Frank Hejl (of the late "Frequency Down" radio show) will be hosting. Mr. Hejl has described this event as an "alternative variety show" in an attempt to meld music and comedy in a rock club setting. I hope this idea works out. At this point, I'd rather sit through a lousy comedian than a lousy band. I'd like to add that I once saw Mathstorm perform and they had a bunch of props and I couldn't believe that they were old enough to no longer have to attend middle school. Their fans were really young too, so the club was full of oversized props and teenagers and I forgot where I was and almost had a panic attack. They did have a lot of enthusiasm, though.

2. Zoo: The Visual Menagerie (Cavern)

Zoo is at the Cavern tonight and I would really like to catch this since I imagine it as a mix between random YouTube finds and a Chunklet Lost and Found DVD.

3. DJ G (Hailey's)
Whenever I've been to this there are always a bunch of hardcore punks and metal heads looking embarrassed to be there. That's just testament to the enduring popularity of this weekly event.

i used to be in a band with Jack Royal called Ludy. We played in Denton quite a bit in '94 & '95. As far as I know, Jack is still in Denton.

Could you link to an mp3 or at least a myspace page on interviews, profiles, and various non-it-list posts like these? I'm interested but lazy. I'd like to read on while listening in the background but the prospect of opening google and typing in "tree waves" and clicking on the link and then possibly even clicking on more links is very daunting... plus I have to stop reading to do so ;( I'm so lazy I decided to write a novel about it. Thanks JR!

Actually, it's probably only the 3rd or 4th time this year that I will have been drunk.
This is a testament to my love for RGRS's Blood Mary and Frank Hejl, and the chance to have them in the same place.

we only saw it 'cause we were beat about the head & shoulders with it.

Denton Time also had a spiffy writeup about the Drams CD release tonight.

I love busy nights.

from www.thefoldmagazine.com:

Back before the days of CD-R's and home internet access, Maxine's Radiator was a Denton band that put out the highly regarded cassette albums Down At the Poor Man's Ballroom and Plastissimo in the mid 90s before their opus Fuzz Bites On Your Neck came out on CD in 1998 on Windago Records. Featuring guitarist Jack Royal, future American Idol star Daron Beck on drums, as well as future Spoon bassist Josh Zarbo, the group was fronted by Sean Kirkpatrick on guitar and keyboards. Their rowdy mix of early-Flaming Lips and early Elton John white boy soul made them one of Denton's more popular local acts, and they played the Dallas/Denton circuit back then as much as Record Hop does today. Sean proved to be one of the regional scene's most talented songwriters, in the same league as Will Johnson & Chris Flemmons. But as Maxine's fizzled out by 2000, he had moved on to co-fronting the Falcon Project with Mwanza Dover and occasionally touring as guest keyboardist with Spoon, before joining the pAper chAse full-time in 2002. While Sean now enjoys a career playing in a band that tours Europe and puts out records on Kill Rock Stars, only in the past year or so has he started to tend to his own woefully neglected songwriting muse. Tonight he takes a break from slumming it with Congleton & crew to play a solo piano set at J&Js, which will be well worth your effort to go check out.
