I probably have nothing to say about this season that you haven't already heard, but I was at least hoping for a good basketball game last night. I was never very confident that we'd win Game 6, but I was pretty sure that it would be close. What a joke. What a waste of time. And no more basketball on this blog for a while.
i'm mad as hell, and i'm not gonna take it anymore
Mike Gravelcertainly seems like a grumpy old man and a bit of a loose cannon, but after watching him on the MSNBC Democratic debate last week, I have to say that I like the guy quite a bit. When he remarked that some of the other candidates up on the stage frightened him, it seemed like the most truthful statement any politician has made so far in the early stages of the 2008 presidential election. Some of them frighten me too, Senator, and I'd be willing to bet that a lot of people feel the same way. Watch this clip from the debate:
Sorry to do this I don't know how many times this week, but I don't have time to say much about these shows. Luckily, you can fill us in if you feel like it.
Amon Tobin | Select | Sober (The Granada) Amon Tobin is very different from the two local openers tonight. Much more dark and moody, and not celebratory at all.
The Pharmacy | El Paso Hot Button | Eat Avery's Bones | White Drugs (Rubber Gloves) The Pharmacy is very straight forwardly pop despite the "punk" tag that they sometimes get assigned. El Paso Hot Button is a very over-the-top one man band. I would describe both White Drugs and Eat Avery's Bones as raunchy, White Drugs for their sound and Eat Avery's Bones for their general humorous aesthetic. This is a smartly mixed lineup.
Mono | World's End Girlfriend | Grails (Hailey's) : If Amon Tobin isn't soundtrack-esque enough for you, here you have three acts that are all heavy on long and dramatic instrumental pieces. Mono is an act that I always want to like, but I'm usually bored by them despite how good they sound on paper.
Leslie and The Ly's | Laura Palmer (Double Wide) Apparently this went over really well at Rubber Gloves, so you get a second chance tonight at the Double Wide if you missed it.
Blonde Redhead | Annuals (Granada) Most people reading this probably know enough about Blonde Redhead to know whether or not they want to see them, but if you are inclined to go, I would highly recommend heading to the Granada early (what is early for the Granada, like 6pm?) to check out Annuals, a band that put out one of the most overlooked indie pop albums of 2006. If you haven't heard them, I recommend checking it out.
Just got an email from Shiny Around the Edgestelling me about some of the new material from their next full length, including a cover of Willie Nelson's "I Just Can't Let You Say Goodbye," produced byCastanets'Ray Raposa. The track is quite minimal and haunting, and the production seems to truly capture the strength of the band's subtle sound. If this is the level of quality that they will be bringing on their next full length, expect to hear a lot about them in the near future.
You can download the trackhere. Highly recommended. And yes, you can actually download by right clicking on the link.
In case you missed it in the comments section today, here is the newly unveiled video for the Undoing of David Wright song "In Which Queen Exotica Returns Eight Thousand Years Later Only to Discover Herself in the Body of a Man," a name that vastly improves on the song's original title, "Waterfalls."
