stereo on strike

Wanz Dover has been playing great records at Fallout Lounge on Thursdays for months now, and he recently decided to take the concept just a bit further by forming Stereo On Strike, a new dj crew/blog/event promotions group with some big plans.

Wanz' weekly Lost Generation set will be just one small part of the Stereo on Strike umbrella, which will also consist of all future laptop deathmatches as well as a monthly Friday night show at Minc featuring dance music inside and IDM/laptop performances outside. As the dance/electro scene in Dallas continues to grow and prosper, we're expecting Stereo on Strike to bring something quite different to the table, with an emphasis on European electro, glitch, minimal house, dubstep, and a lot of other sounds that you can't find in too many places in Texas these days. You can keep tabs on Stereo on Strike by visiting their blog, which already has some great stuff posted including a live performance from The Field (who has released one of my favorite records of the year so far) as well as the Simian Mobile Disco interview below:

Canada | New Science Projects | El Yankee Fantastico | Matthew And The Arrogant Sea (Hailey's)
The local acts on this bill will probably hold your attention better than the rather bland Canada. No matter what you think of New Science Projects, that singer is hard to ignore during a performance. Matthew And The Arrogant Sea also writes some pretty memorable folk-influenced songs in a style that lends well to the haunting recordings on the page. By the way, what's with bands always writing tour blogs? I mean let's see, what did you do? Eat vegan food and buy stupid souvenirs from gas stations in the middle of nowhere. Wow. Ya don't say. Your dog wouldn't even care about that shit if it could read.

Klickitat (Balcony Club)
I believe it's open mic night at the Balcony Club, but Klickitat promises to perform tonight. The piano based songwriting is very pop-oriented (almost Tin Pan Alley territory) and these are without a doubt some of the most original vocals in DFW.

Death Set | Abe Vigoda | John Thill | Eat Avery's Bones (Hailey's)
I was actually pretty impressed with a couple of the songs I just listened to on John Thill's Myspace. Structurally, most of it is fairly straight forward indie folk pop, but it's the little things that make it stand out above the vast majority who might fit such a description. Nervous lyrics and vocal delivery as well as a messy approach to recording makes these songs exciting despite the many conventional elements contained within. The song "Girls of Meth" is a particular stand-out, and I'm hoping this guy can pull this stuff off live. Baltimore's Death Set share their hometown with Dan Deacon and Video Hippos, and they also seem to share the same passion for the kind of fuck you punk silliness that has turned so many people on to their hometown peers. They're almost a guaranteed good live act too if you're interested in seeing the full embodiment of the Descendants' classic "Kids on Coffee" with enough pop hooks and math infused punk ferocity to go around for everyone, including drum machines, keyboards and samples being abused in just the right way. Since tonight's actually like a Thursday night for most people, you might want to go out tonight, have three Saturday nights and then come home.... and start it early bro, since this is about as perfect a show for EAB as you'll see.

FRIDAY

Weedeater | Mitra | WoFat(Pastime Tavern)
Original headliners 400 Blows cancelled due to illness, but Parade of Flesh has recruited WoFat to round out a bill that now features Southern Lord's stoner rock influenced Weedeater, who will take the stage at 1130. Once you listen to these bands and picture them playing at Pastime, you'll see why it is the perfect venue for a show like this. I'm really glad POF is putting shows on at that place. Dallas' Mitra isn't exactly my bag, but they seem to hold their own within the circles they travel. This is one of those shows I kind of want to see even though I'm not sure how much I'll like it. Sometimes those are the best kind.

Keith P | Schwa | Select- Chromeo Record Release Party(Fallout Lounge)
Why have there been two of these Chromeo release parties in the past couple of weeks? Don't ask me. But this set of DJ slots will function as the latest edition of Hotflash, and it should be a good one. Keith P is one of the most tasteful and capable DJs in town these days, and it should be a treat to hear him spin everything from Burial to Simian Mobile Disco to Spank Rock to Sneaker Pimps.

MarnieStern | Fishboy | Eat Avery's Bones (Rubber Gloves)
Hey. I'm just writing to the guy that hates me for making fun of Marnie Stern: I don't mean to make you mad, bro, but this time I acually went and downloaded her album. And you know what? I hate her even more now. Sorry. The full band will probably make this better than the performance I saw at Pitchfork, as will the fact that EAB is playing... but it won't be enough to make me consider watching her again. Check the Myspace if you don't believe me.

SATURDAY

Faux Fox | Ghosthustler | The Party(Granada)
I'm curious to see what kind of crowd this show attracts. For one thing, it's free for 21 and up and only $5 for 18 and up. Second, it has received at least a little coverage in both the Observer and the Dallas Morning News, so I'm guessing some curious parties might come to check out some of the more trendy names in Dallas music. And I don't mean "trendy" as an insult, but rather as a "so hot right now" kind of thing. And the people who constantly accuse Ghosthustler of sounding too much like Faux Fox can go to this show and find out that they're wrong. I'm willing to bet that this show will be a lot of fun, and might be the first of many large crowds Ghosthustler plays to this year.

Mincemeat or Tenspeed | Cars Will Burn | Dave Smolen | Brokenizer | Dromez(House of Tinnitus)
A solid harsh noise show to add to the already impressive performance roster that HOT has accrued. I actually received an email not too long ago from a well known New York based magazine asking some questions about the place, which is pretty funny considering that some people still like to dismiss Denton DIY as "some dude's house." I've said several times on here that I'm not the Prince of Noise like some people like to think, but I honestly feel that every one of these groups is pretty interesting, and EVERYTHING I've seen at House of Tinnitus has ended up being better live than recorded.

Mom(And/Or Gallery)
Mom will be performing for free at 8pm as part of And/Or Gallery's opening of it's latest exhibit, which features the work of Lily Hanson and Jason Singleton. Click on the And/Or link for more info on the art. And/Or shows are always an entertaining and stimulating way to start out the evening.

Attractive and Popular | Stag Film(Pastime Tavern)
Another good Pastime show from Parade of Flesh. Attractive and Popular is an awesome live act, and I'm actually surprised that more people don't rave about them in the comment sections of this blog.

The Riverboat Gamblers | The Arrivals | Last of the Interceptors (Rubber Gloves)

Post Nasal Backspin | Kaboom | IKillCars (SHQ Denton)

Gutterth Festival (J&Js Pizza)
Huge free festival that gets going around 2pm and keeps going until just about closing time. To be quite honest, I'm not a huge fan of a lot of the acts playing this thing, but I can telly you that Mom, Chris Garver, New Science Projects and Sean Kirkpatrick are worth seeing for sure, especially when it's free. Click this to see the full set times, etc.

The Smoke (Art Club): Fans of the Smoke will be happy to learn that the Smoke DJs will be handing out their mix CD on Saturday night. They'll also be happy when they see what a vast improvement Art Club is over the old Avenue Arts. Now book more shows dudes!

SUNDAY

Check back wit us... doesn't look like anything is happening, but if it turns out we're wrong, we'll post something this weekend.
