There are some great shows this weekend, especially on Saturday. The show at Mabel's and the show at Pastime really stand out, as well as the usual excellent and unfortunately overlooked events at The Phoenix Project and 1919 Hemphill. 1919 Hemphill recently released their second compilation, entitled How Ya'll Doin' Tonight?, and perhaps we can get an unbiased review soon. Some brief notes for the weekend's shows: Austin's Silent Diane is one of many great bands from the Central Texas' very rich synth-heavy scene, and it's always great to hear music from Austin that isn't garage rock. They released a seven inch through Answering Machine Recordings, and I want to personally thank the label for helping to distribute our own release by Daniel Francis Doyle, We Bet Our Money On You, which is now on its second pressing. It's good to see Pocket Change back in town, though I usually don't envy anyone that has ever moved somewhere cool, only to find themselves once again in North Texas. So hard to escape. The Shiny Around The Edges show is supposed to have a deli tray. All this "one venue presents a show at another venue" shit is really confusing. Best Fwends are apparently a full band now. Can someone fill me in on the after-party? I have heard that Indian Jewelry are a much tighter outfit lately, with more beats and less meandering. Lightning Bolt are often a target of "extreme music" fans for not being extreme enough. Who cares? They didn't ask to be the early 2000's caricature of what it means to make "crazy music," and they were very good live when I saw them a very long time ago. I don't know how they have held up over the years, but my guess is probably pretty well, despite some movement into more classic rock-styled riffing. They are better than the Murder City Devils or whatever was supposed to cool in 2001, that's for sure. | cuckoo byrds |
| | |
I sat down with The Cuckoo Byrds - one of the newest and more exciting acts on the Denton scene - to ask them a few questions about their burgeoning career as rock stars. The Cuckoo Byrds, made up of David and Lisa from the fantastic Denton vintage store Time Bandits, will be playing their second show together this Saturday at Mabel Peabody's. As one who bore witness to their first performance, I highly recommended you check these folks out.
How long have you been making music together?Well, we started playing in the summer of 2005, though at the time I had never played an instrument before, so my contribution was very minimal, and due to our living situation, we were unable to really get loud. Our sound back then is completely different from what it is now, I hesitate to use the word evolve, because I actually like what we were doing back then, and I think we are still working toward finding "our sound" if you will. What was the transition like from practicing to playing your first show?Playing our first show was incredible! It brought on a whole new level of excitement, and left us wondering why we hadn't played sooner. Of course I was really nervous and I screwed up a bit, but nevertheless, it was truly awesome! Can you tell us a bit about your equipment? Some vintage… some not. Electric piano, bass, drums, tape machine, handmade synth, and various other effects/noise makers… How would you describe your music? This question I always find really tough to answer. I guess “nasty disheveled noise rounded out with rhythmic repetition” would sum it up, hahah What bands do you look to as inspiration? We both could go on forever about bands who have influenced us, and this is very difficult to narrow down, but we’ll try…Can, Amon Duul II, Soft Machine, Get Hustle, Pop Group, Swans, Festival of Dead Deer, Sun Ra, Birthday Party, Art Bears, Teenage Jesus & the Jerks, Univers Zero, DNA, the Muffins, This Heat, Arab on Radar, Liquid Liquid, Ornette Coleman, Brian Eno, the Crainium, Art Zoyd……. you get the idea. What are your thoughts on the local music scene here, from the spectator perspective and now as a performer.Denton’s music scene itself has been a huge inspiration as we come from an area that is somewhat void of any real creativity in terms of music. Here, it’s the polar opposite, and feels uninhibited. Playing our first show with Orange Coax was insane! We love them! And now that we’ve broke the ice, we’re looking forward to playing with more of our favorites from the area. What to look forward to in the future?
Due to extreme heat, quite possibly a naked set, haha… got a few shows lined up…we’re working on some new songs, and trying to record. We each have our own side projects developing as well, so it’s been busy, yet excited to see how it all unfolds! |

Hole (House of Blues)Whether or not Love's personal life is in complete shambles is a case for TMZ and not WSJR. I can tell you that her latest record is DOA. I'm not a huge Hole fan but Live Through This is a pretty great album that showed me at young age, along with Liz Phair, that women could indeed rock. I gave the new album a listen through this morning and it is pretty terrible. Not as terrible as the new Liz Phair album, but noxious none the less. The angst just isn't working for Ms. Love anymore. Maybe she thought she could interject some contemporary relevance by bringing in all new musicians after 12 years (Love is the only original remaining member) but the once fiery voice ends up sounding lazy and crabby. Mates of State (Granada)I'm sure Kori and Jason - the married couple behind Mates of State - are very happy and have a great working relationship, but their music has always had that stale feeling of a relationship that has gone on too long. Instead of expressing their desires to have sex and go to the movies with other people, the two stay together and continue the boring routine that got them through the last ten years and will coast them through the next ten or so. Cage | Hate Your Guts | Timmy Wiggins (Hailey's) I always have a problem with music that leaves no space for humor or levity. Why does this seem so prevalent in the white rapper scene? And please, do not use Eminemn as a rebuttal to the contrary. Knifey Spoony | No Heroes | Stymie | Those Damn Kids (1919 Hemphill) Sir Name | XRY | DJ Wild in the Streets (Cavern) XRY are visiting us from San Antonio and bring with them some funky boot stompers. Should be a solid under the radar night at the Cavern. |

| soular power mix |
| | |
Soular Power is the crate digging DJ duo Mwanz Dover (Blixaboy, Black Dotz) and Gabe (Smoke, Lollipop Shop). The guys were nice enough to send over this eclectically groovy mix ready made for pool side relaxing. You can catch Soular Power tomorrow night at the Cavern. Here is what Mwanz had to say about the mix... A pretty decent mix and a good representation of what happens when Gabe and I get together to DJ. A real diggers delight. pay special attention to the NF Porter,Joy Division and Grace Jones tunes. Gabe makes a little connection for the listening music geeks. One of my best(and oldest) friends Doctor Troy just started a Cold wave/Kraut/Synth reissue label called Medical Records. The Alexander Robotnick track is of on his two reissues he released last week. He is the guy I stay with when I go to Seattle. He is a Doctor by Day, but the biggest record slut I have ever know by night(much worse than me). He specializes in obscure new wave, Italo, and weirdo synth music and has been following for a very long time. He was turning me on to Italo back in the early 90's. I am bringing him down in October for a DJ night.
I hope you all enjoy the mix. We tried go somewhat chronological. Staring in '66 with Jaques Dutronc and ending a Lee Perry and Kode 9 collab from the recently revived ON-U sound. The legendary Dub label from Adrian Sherwood that pretty much defined late 70's/early 80's Dub. downloadTracklist: Jaques dutronc - et moil et moil Dorothy Ashby – Soul Vibrations Gooshgoosh – Talagh Gal Costa - Cultura Civilado Monks – How ya do Dennis Coffey – Getting it On The Osmonds – Crazy Horses Fela Kuti – Who’re You? Peter King – Ajo NF Porter – Keep on Keepin On Joy Division – Interzone Grace Jones – She’s Lost Control The Pop Group – Thief of Fire Alexander Robotnick - Problemes D’amour The Rimshots – Do what you feel The Big Boys – We Got Soul A Certain Ratio – Do the Du The Dirtbombs – Ode to a Black Man Broadcast – Pendulum Ellen Allien – Ghost train Lee “Scratch”Perry & Kode 9 – Yellow Tongue |

Singles Going Steady with Chris Pickering | Adam Cahoon (Rubber Gloves)
If you have ever wanted to attend a DJ event with DJ's that have spent many, many hours making fun of DJ's, then this is the DJ night for you. I mean, when it comes to this sort of "45's only" or "vinyl only" punk DJ events, you'll always hear how it's not really a DJ night, because it's punk, or Ye Ye, or garage, or other things that aren't dance music, or used to be dance music, or could never be dance music, so it's...you know...it's cool. Like, DJ's totally suck, but look, man, it's different when I do it, okay?! Because I like, know what good, real music is, you got me? You know I'm not like that Yeah Def guy, right? Naw, man, this ain't that. It's like I could have gone down that path, but I met some rich guy from West Plano back in 1997 that totally had a Crass patch and a $3,000 Sony Mavica and he would go to all the rap rock parties in high school and just hide in the corner and not talk to anyone, and take pictures. And then he would post his pics on a Geocities site, and describe the shows and post the pics. It was kind of like proto-blogging or like proto-"photo booth," ya know what I mean? Speaking of proto-shit, I have these proto-punk 45's by Destroy All Monsters* and Electric Eels* and they sound fantastic playing through the RGRS PA, got me? Yeah Def (Hailey's)
I had almost forgotten that Yeah Def still did this until I saw a comment he posted on Facebook. *I totally do and you "DJ's" should borrow a couple sometime. |
