Apologies-- our impressive careers have been getting in the way of writing all day. However, we do have all the worthy shows listed and linked, and we are taking this opportunity to remind you one last time to vote in the WSJR awards... voting ends today at 5, and we're SUPER excited about counting all these votes! Totally! (Note: Contributions from SR and DL) Before you do anything else: Vote.FRIDAY Wanz Dover | Stephen R. | Cygnus | Select | Robert Taylor | Keith P | Sean Varga/Convextion (Minc)
Wanz Dover's Stereo on Strike DJ crew will be throwing their first big party the right way-- laptop performances outside, and an impressive cast of talented local DJs doing more genre bending than I can describe in the limited amount of time I have. Pretty good sound system too. Cat Power | Micah P. Hinson (The Granada)
The only Texas stop from our generation's Carole King. Well, she's like Carole King except she's at her best when interpreting the work of others, but I definitely prefer her voice, no matter how blasphemous a statement that might be to some. The bluesy backing band style featured on her more recent work has shorn off some of her rough edges and definitely made her a little more mom-friendly, but I think her voice can usually save even some of the afterthought writing on her records. The somewhat confusingly critically adored Micah P. Hinson opens. Gregg Foreman (of Delta 72 and The Lily's) (Monkey Bar)
DJ set after Cat Power. Tha Bracelets | Man Factory | ZipZipZapZap | Red Pony Clock(Rubber Gloves) SATURDAYDaniel Francis Doyle | The Numerators | My Milliner | Red Leaves (Secret Headquarters)
Daniel Francis Doyle (formerly of Early Lines) is a noisy one-man wrecking ball based in Austin and tonight he's joined by Lubbock's The Numerators and My Milliner. The Numerators are a duo that mix noise, keyboard beats, and even rapping into a lively set. I've heard that My Milliner is like Dirty Three without the violin, and I suppose that would make them somewhat like a band of dudes making music. Record Hop | White Drugs | Douche (Fra House)
One of the main places to be tonight. This show is your best bet for stripped down pure fucking rock. Everyone's dying to hear that second Record Hop album and I'm dying to see Douche. Funny as that sounds. Pinebox Serenade | Dana Falconberry | George Neal (Dan's Silverleaf)
This is a good song-writing showcase. The sprawling stage setup of Pinebox Serenade is a show in itself, George Neal debuts his full band tonight and Dana Falconberry will be doing double duty this weekend by performing here at Dan's as well as The Fine Arts Theater with Peter and The Wolf. Zanzibar Snails | Social Junk | Pony Bones | Mugu Guymen (House Of Tinnitus)
This show features some adventurous ambient noise/folk combinations as well as some straight up ambient noise. These groups sound like the real deal, guaranteed to be "freakier" than anything you'll hear at the New Sabbath festival and you won't even have to push past grown men wearing animal costumes to see what it's all about. You might however have to push past a naked man, covered in beer and blood. Fishboy | MC Router | Tah Dahs | Patience Please (HOUSE SHOW-411A Panhandle in Denton at the corner of Panhandle and Carroll)Sticky Buns (Rubber Gloves)The Good Sons (Secret Location)
This show, originally booked at Pastime Tavern, has been moved to an undisclosed location for unknown reasons... actually, they disclosed it to me, but I'm not allowed to tell you where it is. I think you can email Wanz about it if you know how. Good Sons will be playing Scratch Acid stuff, and Joe Butcher, Laura Palmer and Loop 12 will be playing as well throughout the night. I bet some of today's comment posters will be surprised by the show's location... New Sabbath Festival Lineup: After all that has happened with MATAS and this festival over the past couple of weeks, it seems most appropriate to give you the line up and call it a day. I'll add that the quality is mixed, ranging from good to noteworth to don't give a shit... should be interesting to see whether these guys can pull this thing off. Anyone who has gripe about the sabbath festival needs to realize it was just run be a people, not a booking agency, and they got in over their heads.

I can't speak for people under 30, but most people play folk music because they are ex-rockers who don't want to lose more hearing, have car payments, and no longer want to deal with bandmates. |

sorry there is no correlation between being a 'real' hippie and being 'cool' or nice. in fact being 'real' or 'real hippie' is to be undefined by simple terms as nice or cool. another solid 'no'. folk there is no relation to folk and hippie. people get your heads out of your asses please. also, woody guthrie was not a hippie. this is also retarded. wtf are you people talking about. |

true dat. noise musicians and folk musicians can both fall under that same douche-ness however not so as often is a noise or experimental musician a douche as a folk musician. there are scientific equations involved. trust me. |

given the fact that true folk musicians are hippies (even Woody Guthrie was a hippie) and real hippies are some of the nicest people on earth... therefore, where the fuck was I going with this. Bob Dylan was kind of an asshole in Don't Look Back... whatever. Stop the war |

this is my problem is 'folk' musicians. they suck as people. if you know someone who plays 'folk' music. they probably suck a big one as a musician and a person. now not to say all 'folk' musicians are assholes and can suck it. cause i know a few that are cool. but for the most part. bag o' douche fest. |

AN AFTERWORD OR ALTERATION TO THE ABOVE
I found one of the flyers the local bands should be on at J&J's
it lists the five 'large acts' and
'50+ local bands'
Welcome to the 50+ |
| | |
| Anonymous says.. |

I want to rant a bit about the New Sabbath Festival(fellow anons, I know you probably don't give a shit, but BEAR with me).
I was approached to play this thing with a pitch that was basically
'Hi, we're putting on a festival to benefit Denton! We're putting some of our favorite Denton acts on the same stage as some big folk names, all to promote Denton etc etc.'
Well, things change, I know, but they sure changed for the worse. Over time word got out that the 'Big Folk Bands' were guaranteed numbers like $400 dollars for playing the festival, while none of the 50+ local bands recieve anything at all.
This didn't seem to be good for Denton musicians, but I rationalised it with the idea that the larger bands would still be sharing a stage with the locals, thus 'promising' a bigger draw, and more exposure. It seemed like maybe it was worth it.
That was until all of the 'large' bands were moved to another location, leaving the 'reason for the festival' without the 'promise' of the larger band's draw.
This may not matter to anyone but me, maybe I am just being stupid about it, but I don't like the idea of promoting a show and telling my friends to spend ten dollars just to pay Peter and the Wolf's guarantee. Sure, we're all on the same flyer as the 'larger' bands. I guess that's something, right?
The New Sabbath Festival, in the end, has become another show at J&J's for no money that every band plays every weekend in this fucking town. It is not a 'help to Denton's musicians' etc etc, it is just getting 50 bands together on the square, hoping that, together, they will bring enough people to pay Peter and the Wolf's huge bill.
Fucking blows.
Anyway. |

Y'know what? I've thought "the only good thing about this blog is the hateful anons." Maybe I'm right. And as I stood across the highway and gazed at the ClearChannel building I could only think: "Long live anons." "Long live cynicism" "Long live skepticism" "Long live hate, if that's what it takes."
Thank God for open forums. Open forums rule, and are perhaps the most important thing we have. Bitch, moan and whine but realize how good this is. It could be worse. You could work for ClearChannel. I love your nonsensical, hateful, unfounded and anonymous opinions. Viva! God Bless You. |

It's great that you guys(we shot jr) support the best in local music, but i think that having awards or holding some popularity contest for these bands is beneath the groups covered here. I know this is more for revenge on the BS DO awards, but you don't have to kneel that low.
I'm not going to say don't vote, but support the bands by going out to their shows. I'd almost rather see a list of we shot jr approved bands listed with links to their myspace pages.
