George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic (House of Blues)
This probably would have been a better choice for the grand opening of House Of Blues if it had been an option. You can't really dispute Clinton's place in music history. The fact that his music is still sampled so often is testament to a sizable legacy. I would actually go to this show.

Frog Eyes | Alex Delivery | The Tah Dahs(Rubber Gloves)
Frog Eyes' vocal stylings are a little much for me, but they're a step above most indie pop I've heard lately. Alex Delivery are definitely the most remarkable group tonight. They've been criticized for trying to stretch the diversity of influences beyond the logical extreme, but I just hear some pretty interesting Kraut-influenced music, thick with texture and polyrhythms. Much better than I was expecting for sure. The Tah Dahs...well, they remind me of when Apples In Stereo turned into a pop-punk band. Sometimes it's astounding that a group can discover so many new ways to disappoint.

Modest Mouse | Man Man | Love As Laughter(Nokia Theater)
I don't know where to begin with Modest Mouse. They remind me of what Vice magazine said about Nine Inch Nails. I'm paraphrasing but they basically said that they exist in this weird limbo where they aren't cool, but they are also not uncool. I was once sitting at a T.G.I. Friday's and "Paper Thin Walls" came on over the piped-in music. It sounded pretty good. Probably the defining moment in the dramatic story that is Modest Mouse. Now Johnny Marr is in the band so he might be the only musician with the very strange resume of playing with Isaac Brock, Paul McCartney, and Morrissey. Wow. Talk about being simultaneously cool and uncool. Modest Mouse is pulling the classic strategy where the bloated major label act brings their still respected indie pals on the road in hopes that they can symbiotically get the trade off: New fans for the little bands and a desperate credibility transfusion for the weary dinosaur. Careful there, bands. This often backfires. Man Man is a celebrated live act but it's a lot harder to impress people at Nokia than at the Cavern. As in, almost impossible.

Why are you all so fucking stupid?

It's "Modest Mouse ARE good", not "Modest Mouse IS good". You're talking about a collective entity. Did none of you go to school?

How the hell can you say Modest Mouse are a bad band? Cryptic lyrics and amazing guitarwork and dynamic time signatures, all the way. My favourite song is "Edit The Sad Parts" off Interstate 8 EP. Off the new album, Spitting Venom, Steam Engenius and Fly Trapped In A Jar, and Education are all brilliant.

Everyone needs to cool down and stop listening to shitty music!

Did I miss something ... Johnny Marr is .. IN? ... Modest Mouse?

Huh. How does something like that happen.

I'm not offended, I just thought it was cool that he kept playing even though he threw up three or four times.

I liked earlier modest mouse, but everything after the Moon and Antartica hasn't really impressed me. Sometimes a band can make decent music and end up falling along the way. I was more shocked to find out that Man Man was opening for them. They became one of my favorite bands when i happened to stumble into a show of theirs at Club De Ville during SXSW 2 years ago. I'll say that alot of people will probably show up to see modest mouse, but hopefully they'll be blown away by Man Man and see that there is better music out there than what TRL feeds them....

Modest Mouse was best on that record where they sounded like Men at Work.

its a long drive for someone with nothing to think about was the first album i ever owned that i hadn't heard on the radio. i think i bought it on accident, and for better or for worse, it fundamentally changed how i listened to music. i wouldn't pay to see them in concert anymore, but i do owe them that.

"i was dragged to a modest mouse show. the guy played for like 20 minutes before almost puking on stage. then he just disappeared and someone came out to tell us that he had food poisoning. end of story."

if you're talking about the show at the Galaxy club like seven or eight years ago, then you're wrong because Modest Mouse played a full set despite the fact that he had to keep running off stage to throw up because of food poisoning.

And yeah, success means something different to everybody. Success to me is getting my songs out there for as many people as possible to listen to/have a chance to listen to....and hopefully the songs will influence those people to have fun/reflect/feel something new.

p.s. You can accomplish more than you've ever dreamed, so please don't take me so seriosly.

You're so full of it stonedranger. Most of you are. I bet a trillion dollars that every last one of you was just in fucking love with Modest Mouse 5-10 years ago. You were all at the sold out shows at RGRS you hypocrites.

Makes me think of someone who also has a strange resume and whom I'd consider the anti-Marr stylistically -- Steve Vai. He's played and recorded with Frank Zappa, John Lydon, and David Lee Roth.

success is a terrible word.

If my goal is to make terrible music and I SUCCEED at doing so, then I will be enjoying the HEIGHT OF SUCCESS.

if my goal is to make music that I enjoy, and I succeed in doing that, then I am also enjoying the HEIGHT OF SUCCESS. so don't give me this "band A is more successful than band B" bullshit because all one needs for success is the ability to achieve GOALS.

you know--i had to listen to some modest mouse whilst on road trips with an indie guy--it really wasnt THAT bad. i mean, its not for me, but the lyrics were ok and the music was so-so. i was really grateful that he liked and let me play polvo, though.

success doesn't merit talent.

With that said, I'm on the fence with Modest Mouse. I really liked Everywhere and his parlour tricks, but the other records I could take or leave.

Lost Generation is still on. Lots of good new trax to play. Ineka and I will be joined by my pal Doug Kliever. He's got great taste and will bring something different to the table for sure. I will have a variety of DJ mixes free for the taking. They are all hard mixed and one hour on track mixes. Come by and say hi. Cheers!!!!

p.s. I heard from an inside source that House of Blues is not even considering local shows. I kind of suspected they would be satan, but this confirms it. Pooh on them. I'd love to see Parliment though.
