Looks like this will be one of the slowest weekends we've seen around here in a while, but there are still a couple good things to do:

FRIDAY

Shearwater/Minus Story | Shiny Around the Edges (Rubber Gloves)
Although I don't know much about Shearwater, for some reason I just assumed that they sucked before this week. I don't know why. Maybe they used to. Maybe it's the name. Who knows. But after a couple listens to some of the material on Palo Santo, their latest album, I realized that they do not in fact suck. Their music is soft and pretty and poppy and heavy on the atomospherics with a rustic folk presence, yet it is a far cry from the boring indie pop that I assumed it was. And pretty much the same goes for Minus Story as well. Two very solid bands that aren't breaking any rules, but are quite impressive all the same. The excellent Shiny Around the Edges opens, and I'm sure we'll hear some of the new material of their forthcoming full length, which should be released some time in the next couple of months.

Late Night at the DMA- Erykah Badu: Free show starts at 8pm unless it rains or something. Check the DMA website for weather updates... and assuming it does happen, coolers filled with alcohol will be allowed. So there's that.

Apparently, The Stills will be playing a free show at the 7-11 4201 Travis (corner of Travis and Fitzhugh) at 9pm as part of some Camel sponsored invite only event. Not kidding. According to the Camel website, the event is sold out, so I guess you'll have to go in there and pretend you just want to buy some delicious Camel smokes or something. Yum.

Sean Vargas (Esoterica Lounge- Ft. Worth)

SATURDAY

Hailey's Summer Showcase feat. Tree Wave, Ghosthustler, Sarah Reddington and others (Hailey's)
This thing is free if you're over 21 and $5 if you're not. Honestly it's a mixed bag of acts, and some of the better ones probably couldn't have a worse set time (Ghosthustler while it's still light outside?), but we're not going to bitch too much about a free show with free stuff, and unlike most weekends of late, there isn't a whole lot happening in Denton this weekend. Check the Hailey's website for the full line up.

Radioclit | Nature | Sober | Select(Fallout Lounge)
Central Booking brings London's emerging DJ group Radioclit to Fallout for one of a very small number of U.S. dates. Radioclit seems to spin the usual range of styles for a Central Booking gig, from Lilly Allen to Sinden to David Banner to Justin Timberlake. Something to please everyone with good taste in dance.. and if you don't believe me, you can check the mix on their myspace page or the Central Booking blog. I thought I should mention the $3 cover as well since it's a rarity at Fallout.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club | The Horrors (House of Blues)
The last time I saw BRMC they played annoying improv shit and acted like they were on heroin. Maybe they were. I still really enjoy the first two BRMC albums (especially Take Them On, On Your Own), but I don't know what they hell they've been trying to do for the past couple of years. The Horrors are one of those NME English teenager bands that look like little pieces of shit but aren't actually as bad as you want them to be. Not great mind you, but not bad. Think Christian Death mixed with Art Brut and you're kinda right.

Daniel Folmer | The Western Civilization | Chris Garver | New Science Projects (The Cavern)

SUNDAY

Great Lake Swimmers | Eleni Mandell (Bend Studios)
In one of the comments sections the other day, someone couldn't seem to believe that a halfway decent act was playing at Bend Studios. Neither could I. But they are. Eleni Mandell is tolerable as well.

Thunderbirds are Now! (Palladium Loft)

Skinny Puppy (House of Blues)
This was a blast from the past that I didn't even realize was alive, much less playing shows. But they are. You decide which side of the acceptable industrial influences/bad metal industrial side of the divide they fall on. I'd say the former for sure, but an argument can be made for the latter.... early stuff rules though.

I just want to say... I wasn't the anonymous poster who said "you make me sick" or any of those personal attacks... It really looks like I did but I didn't. I don't roll that way.

I am not an indie snob but I do think I have the right to complain about a drunk dude with his trophy wife standing up on his chair and playing air guitar through restless sinner. The venue was weird and I wasn't there to be seen... If I had been then I wouldn't have bought tickets for the last row in the balcony. It was a good show but as the band said on-stage, "it's hard to make dirty rock n roll in a place this clean."

dude, i'm not even talking about you, so why don't you calm down? i'm talking about a bunch of jackasses that happened to be in front of me at the brmc show. i'm also not the person who attacked you in the first place. believe it or not, not every anonymous blogger is the same douche who feels the need to come on here and start jr. high style internet drama about you. i was actually responding a completely different person responding to another post that i believe had a point. the only observation being made here as that vain, obnoxious drunks seem to be in a higher concentration at h.o.b. than at gross clubs, and that being annoyed by their antics doesn't make you some kind of immature indie snob, it just makes you a human being who is trying to watch a damn show and is being distracted. again, i'm not talking about you, i don't know you, i don't care how big a hard ass you are and i'm not here to debate it. oh, and by the way. yes, i made a typo. so did you.

uh, yeah, you don't have to be a "juvenille indie snob" to be annoyed by gross girls dancing like strippers and drunken jackasses standing up and screaming in the row in front of you during a brmc acoustic set. it has nothing to do with generes or whether your feet stick to the floor of the club. it has to do with the fact that alot of stupid people who go to shoes to be seen instead of to hear music would probably avoid venues where they might get beer or bodily fluids on their designer shoes. is it nice to have clean bathrooms and seats? yeah. is it worth sitting next to some douchebag chugging red bulls and screaming all night? no.

as i get older, i must admit that clean bars with nice bathrooms sound better and better.

dont be a juvenile indie snob. have fun and you will be happy NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE.

now stop picking on heather, asshole. its annoying.

BRMC was really good, but I always think they are...

HOB SUCKS! It was the worst venue. It sounded pretty good but it all felt gross and wrong. The venue is spotless with sailor jerry art on the walls. Then you add every highland park/ university park asshole coming out to see a "rock show" so they throw on some really expensive ripped jeans and a black tee, it feels like you are watching people walk around in bad halloween costumes of you and your friends.

The whole thing felt like someone saying, "Hey, you don't like those gross places where rock n roll bands play because they're scary right? Rubber Gloves is too dirty for you right? So here is the family friendly version! All the things you think these places are but now you can bring your kids and order a burger named after Keith Richards! Send the kid home and get sloshed on yaggerbombs and vodka/ redbull."

The band was good but I would probably never go see a show at HOB again.

I know this is a little late.

But I did get to see Skinny Puppy at their first, second, and third show here in Dallas. And I will never forget the concert at Club Clearview.

Front 242, Frontline Ass., Revolting Cocks, Skinny Puppy, Ministry. This was before they all went Metal Industrial.

Just saying Skinny Puppy always put's on an over the top show.

Eh?

Really nice venue.
Great sound.

SP was cool, but not as good as last time. I like how they updated some of their older material though. Still a treat to hear and see that live. Really happy they ditched the live metal guitar stuff. No "Deep Down Trauma Hounds" though? Or did I miss it? One or two other songs I was surprised they didn't do.

I couldn't stand White Mice. Just one long muddy dirge of death metal growling and pounding drums at either fast or really fast speed. Not my thing at all. Cute masks though.

The sound at HOB is very good, really loud. Nice joint overall and I expected high beer prices but they weren't bad. Parking wasn't a bitch either.

Acute Toxicity Tests: Acute toxicity tests, commonly called lethal dose or poisoning tests, determine the amount of a substance that will kill a percentage, even up to 100 percent, of a group of test animals. In these tests, a substance is forced by tube into the animals' stomachs or through holes cut into their throats. It may also be injected under the skin, into a vein, or into the lining of the abdomen; mixed into lab chow; inhaled through a gas mask; or introduced into the eyes, rectum, or vagina. Experimenters observe the animals' reactions, which can include convulsions, labored breathing, diarrhea, constipation, emaciation, skin eruptions, abnormal posture, and bleeding from the eyes, nose, or mouth.

The widely used lethal dose 50 (LD50) test was developed in 1927. The LD50 testing period continues until at least 50 percent of the animals die, usually in two to four weeks

SKINNY PUPPY cest soir!

Skinny Puppy. Holy shit. I can't wait.

How could anyone make an argument that they fall on the bad metal side of things? That's one mediocre album among a over a dozen masterpieces. SP kills everything.

Sorry SR. I just really like Skinny Puppy. :)

You didn't know Skinny Puppy was still playing shows because you don't really like Skinny Puppy. You probably never did.

What? How can you write about BRMC without even mentioning the Jesus & Mary Chain? I thought there was some sort of rock critic law that says you can't like BRMC because of the similarity. It seems you form opinions independently of the critical consensus, and I find that disruptive and threatening.

On the cool, Howl was a great album too. They weren't that great last time they played Dallas, though. Their drummer blew.

Zak says..7:08 PM

Fuck yeah Skinny Puppy. Last time they came through with Otto it was fucking awesome. Otto was cool, but SP and especially Ogre didn't disappoint with the visual show and playing the oldies.

I have loved that band since I was young and was really into industrial music. And they definitely fall into the awesome side of that music. They were one of the great ones that didn't sound like a metal band with keyboards.

Their older more electronic stuff still sounds amazing and you won't hear many bands come anywhere close to having that dark, frightening sound anymore.

I haven't heard the new one because a few people told me it wasn't that good but if it sounds like Download's stuff I'll check it out.

Expensive show at HOB though. Thanks for mentioning this show because I wouldn't have even checked HOB normally. Think I'll listen to some VIVIsectVI to get me in the mood.

If THEY have it wrong, thats another story.

And sorry about the Horrors...

White Mice and Otto Von Schirach are opening for Skinny Puppy. Unlike the last Skinny Puppy album(which was closer to Marilyn Manson than Too Dark Park) the new Skinny Puppy album is more like the Cevin Key's IDM glitch and bash project Download. This is a pretty solid bill as long as they avoid the material from the last album. Otto completley one upped them when we saw them a few years ago. I suspect that might have something to do with them upping their game.

that's my 2 cents.

Spune has its head up its ass. They are completely not in touch with what's going on locally. Why put Ghosthustler halfway down the roster? Or, more importantly, why did Ghosthustler even take this crap show?
