!!! | The Field | The Party (Palladium Loft)
Looking forward to what will probably be one hell of a live show at Palladium tonight. For those who haven't experienced it yet, The Field's From Here We Go Sublime, released earlier this year on Kompakt, is easily one of the most enjoyable electro/dance records to be released by anyone this year. It features enough four on the floor house influenced party vibe to keep people moving, but what makes the album really good is the Field's ability to keep the party going while infusing it with interesting textures and an un-Kompaktlike focus on emotions and melodies, making it a grim but hopeful sounding record that seems to serve as a memorable soundtrack to just about anything. It is one of the more noteworthy achievements in European techno this year to be sure, and it's a rare treat to have someone like The Field's Axel Willner in Dallas for a performance. I'm also looking forward to seeing !!! live for the first time. I've been a fan since the release of their debut single on Touch and Go (2003's "Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard"), and although I'm not sure that they've ever surpassed the greatness of that song, I've heard that their live show is can't miss, and I believe it.

Bad Religion | The Briggs | Gallows (House of Blues)
Ah, Bad Religion. There was a time many moons ago when I thought they were one of the best bands on the face of the planet. Turns out, they aren't. And although I can't tell you one thing about what Bad Religion has been doing for the past 12 years, I can tell you that I've seen them live twice (both well past their "prime") and they were exceptional both times. You'd probably have to be a hardcore old school fan of the band's to care at this point, and Bad Religion probably can be blamed (indirectly) for the mall punk phenomenon, but in my mind, they've done enough to warrant a mention and some credit, because I'm guessing that for a few of you (like me), Bad Religion was one of the first bands that helped you be pissed off in a more intelligent fashion, and when you're a teenager, that's pretty important. And oh yeah, Suffer is still one of the five best American hardcore albums of the 1980s, and Bad Religion's early stuff really rules. Against the Grain is up there for me too.

I'm no old school fan--Suffer was released a year to the day I was born. However, that doesn't stop me from loving them and their music as well as giving it the respect they deserve. They put on an amazing show Monday, and it's safe to say they've still got the talent and love for the music they had 27 years ago... something that today's "punk rockers" are still lacking.

hey, don't judge radiohead for our crappy exchange rate. Remember, most things in the UK cost as much in pounds as they would in the US in Dollars (more or less), meaning that if a big mac is $2 here, it is 2 pounds there... meaning it is $4 there.

So honestly, Radiohead (a British band mind you) is not charging all that much for a package that includes records, CDs, artwork, additional unreleased songs, a book, and a digital download.

And guess what? If you don't want to pay for it, you can download the album for as much or as little as you want. And you're really going to bitch about that?

82 fucking dollars for a couple of records, a book and some mp3s... it should come with a gun and suicide instructions as well

The new radiohead album in 9 days!!! OMG!!!

Radiohead dropped a bomb on the music industry last night, announcing their new album In Rainbows. What's the big deal? Well, first of all, it'll be released in a mere 9 days, catching everyone off guard (it was expected sometime next year) and keeping the tracks from leaking to the web. Secondly, you'll be able to download the album from their official site for any price you want to pay. Yes, it's pay what you want, including free. Really.

If you want a physical copy, you'll need to drop a whopping $82 on the "discbox," which includes both CD and vinyl versions of the album, plus an additional CD/vinyl of more new songs, with the CD also including digital pictures and other such goodies. It also comes with a big photo/art book. That version also comes with the digital download, as the physical copy won't drop 'til December 3rd (the delay to help prevent leaks, presumably).

What Radiohead is essentially doing is making piracy useless for their album. It won't leak, so you can't get it early by pirating. And, assuming they'll be selling high-quality MP3s as they do with all their other albums, there's no reason to avoid DRM by pirating. And, since it's essentially free if that's what you think it's worth, you won't save any money by pirating. By making this the best way to get the album, chances are good that people will actually, you know, pay for it, even though they don't have to. And since this is Radiohead, you know boatloads of people are going to drop $82 on the collectors-item discbox, which is sure to help them make their ducats.

Oh, did I mention they're doing this without a record label? Yes, that sound you just heard was the music industry collectively crapping its pants. [Radiohead via Idolator]

Oh come on. It's not even about !!! anymore. It's time to go way back with Nik Offer's original band, The Yah Mos. Now they were where it was at. All this !!!/Out Hud stuff is so 2003. Now, if anyone says they've seen The Yah Mos is either lying, or are really close friends with someone. And don't think of this post as a "one-up," more like a "shut up."

I'm sure that they're relieved that you feel their presence in our fair city warrants being mentioned by you.

Also, Stranger Than Fiction was a pretty good album.

i thought that show in 2000 was their downfall. i loved everything before that. i was introduced to them in 1998 in a high school talent show, and it was insane. easily one of the best shows i've ever seen.
