Noticeable interest increase, post-review.

Again - that Zac Crain benefit CD was all local bands - I'd love to see a review, not for those songs so much, but as a way to review a ton of local groups at once.

I never have any idea if what we do has an effect on anything (mostly because I never really get to talk to outside people about it), but I do want to say that we DO review some local records, and although we've been a little slow about record reviews so far this year, we're just now starting to get several new reviews together for posting... we plan on doing half a dozen in the next couple of weeks, which will hopefully catch us up to the point where we will be able to review noteworthy local albums on or before their official "release dates," even if those don't really matter anymore.

And to anyone reading this who has sent us an album for review: we have a big stack of mail we're going through, but if you sent it, we've probably got it and we'll get around to it ASAP.

this blog isn't really in the business of reviewing records. If the readership is as the numbers say they are, and readers actually bothered buying records instead of downloading them, then i'd imagine if WSJR did start reviewing records it would have an effect on the good records sales chart.

just a thought. with a lot of commas.

I agree with you totally on the hard work and integrity it takes to be fully independent and the respect that deserves, but come on... that has NOTHING to do with matching your outfits and giant octopus arms. Bands (that don't have huge label-financed budgets) and still do that shit, on their own, deserve even more respect, IMO.

I think the word "indie" to describe a sound is stupid, since its short for "independent." So if we take that literally, Arcade Fire are NOT indie. I mean I saw Neon Bible for sale at fucking Target. Fugazi was independent fully. They booked their own tours, ran their own labels and did whatever they could to make sure ticket prices were under $10. They wouldn't fall under the category of what people consider "indie" these days mainly because they didn't spend their time worrying about picking out matching clothes for their shows or worrying about who brought the fake octopus arm for the big finale. They never got on a major label despite many many offers.

ummm.... what was the point of all this? I don't know.

umm.... fuck the Arcade Fire... and Of Montreal.

You're on an indie blog where people pride themselves on discovering new and undiscovered music. How many records do you think you need to sell in order to become "legit" in this context?

koji kondo/ eat averys bones split show at good records may 12th @ 3:00pm sharp!!!!!!!

numbers are absolutely legit. ask anyone who works there, they'll tell you how they find em.

Informed as Hell says..4:48 PM

11:14- The numbers are accurate. To get into the local top 5, it doesn't take that many sales. How many local bands do you think sell more than one cd a week, if that?

I'm so excited about Blonde Redhead next week. It's gonna rule. But in otherwise, why isn't the new Cornelius album up there? Come on people! That stuff is awesome!

robert at 3! that's what I'm talking about!

stonedranger says..4:58 AM

well I don't know for sure, but I've had CJ quote me actual #s in regards to local album sales before, so I'm pretty sure the list is legit. I'm not going to share those #s because I don't know if he wants me to, but I will say that they aren't huge, meaning that 1114 could have easily appeared on the local list without selling a lot of albums.

Refreshing bit of honesty, anon. Now if we only knew who you are....

Anonymous says..4:14 AM

Hate to disillusion anyone, but the local top fives are always fictional/promotional, both at GR and at CD World, and probably others.

I would know because I've been on the list for both, and I know how many albums I sold: Not enough to be legit.
