Wu Tang Clan | Nas | UGK | Talib Kweli (Smirnoff)
I just can't accept a Wu Tang Clan without Ol' Dirty Bastard. It's too bad this blog wasn't around in 2004 because I could have written down my monologue about why his death was so much more significant than Elliott Smith's the year before, a little speech that infuriated everyone around me for about six weeks. Central Booking even hinted that Ghostface Killah might be a no-show, and he's easily the next best rapper of the bunch, as far as theatrics, uniqueness, and style are concerned. Nas has always been able to carry even somewhat weak material on the strength of his personality, and I respect his public calling out of 50 Cent at the height of his popularity. UGK are probably the artists that were chopped and screwed before anyone else in this lineup, therefore making them somewhat closer to my heart. Standing out from this fairly rough bunch is Talib Kweli, who's lone bit of controversy is sampling Ben Kweller without asking. Take it as a compliment, Ben.

Riverboat Gamblers | Valient Thor | Totimoshi (House Of Blues)
Woah, sixteen dollars to see a local punk band?! I wonder what kind of distro deal they got?! To be fair, they do live in Austin now.

I went to House of Blues for the first time the other night for the Gamblers show. All I can say now that I've been is Robert Johnson sold his sold to the devil to play the blues. Ironically House of Blues has no soul. Maybe the big room is better but all I saw was the difference between Bronco Bowl vs Nokia on a smaller scale w/ Gypsy vs HOB. Guess I'm getting old but I personally am not thrilled w/ the evolution of corporate venues messing w/ my Rock & Roll.

man, you weren't kidding about the sound sucking in the cambridge room at hob. it wasn't any better than standing outside of the club trying to listen.

i wont argue that the production on "nigga please" was top notch right down to the bst samples and dolemite soundbites but as an overall record i doubt it would break the top five wu solo joints...i mean liquid swords, bofcl, fishscale are all classics ...and to say he is the best mc?... totally laughable.... most "heads" would argue gza or ghost

i say ghost

The sound sucked. And Valient Thorr were better than the Riverboat Gamblers anyway.

"Nigga Please" all the way through is maybe the best rap performance ever. Sorry to break it to you. Listen again and marvel that it was released by a major label.

You referenced High Fidelity. Automatic dismissal from the blog.

comparing odb to elliot smith is the sort of nonsensical fanboy yammering that you would find in the outtakes of high fidelity

Is it really fair to call the Gamblers punk. They used to be a decent rock band, but now they are borderline pop punk. Yuck!!
