There's not going much going on tonight except for Bad Azz Jazz at The Amsterdam. Or if you're into live shows heavy on crowd interaction, "human bowling", and Japanese punk, there's Peelander-Z at The Double Wide, with opening act Cygnus of Laptop Deathmatch. Or if you into watered down Florida based Emo rock with an unhealthy Springsteen fetish, the remaining members of Hot Water Music have a new project called The Draft headlining at Rubber Gloves. Opening acts include Dead To Me, The Gaslight Anthem, and A Death In The Family. By those names alone, I would expect similar territory to be mined here. Matt Pond PA is also playing in The Cambridge Room at House Of Blues. So if you're into groups that would build an entire EP around a cover of "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis, it's your lucky night. |

Flash forward 20 years. You'll be reading something like this thread on the digital computer imbedded on your teen age son's solar powered rocket scooter and feeling as old as I feel reading this about the Boss. Ghost of Tom Joad is really a fine song. One of my favorites. |

317-- What is a "webspace?"
And when it comes to Springsteen, I don't really care either way. To me, he is little more than the guy who used to sing "Born in the U.S.A." when I was a kid. I liked that song. He also did that "Glory Days" song, right? That was pretty good too.
And yes, I've heard Nebraska and some of his early stuff, and some of it is good, but it doesn't really do anything for me. Maybe it's because I've had one too many drunk middle aged texas dudes tell me how amazing "born to run" is. And a bunch of douche co-workers and bosses who were into him too. |

Woah, Springsteen's a hot topic. I like how people tell you to go listen to something so ubiquitous that you've been hearing since you were an infant, as if you've never heard it or you just weren't really listening. R. Javelinn, I understand the Suicide/Nebraska comparison, particularly on "State Trooper" and the song's resemblance to "Frankie Teardrop." That doesn't really make it good, just kind of interesting. Shiny Around The Edges did a good cover of that song. Springsteen used to cover a Suicide song as well. He also wrote "Blinded By The Light" and various other atrocious songs. Every Emo rocker I knew in the late 90's/early 00's slept with a copy of Nebraska by his pillow. That's probably part of why the boss annoys me more than he should. |

Saul Williams is more of a poet than a rapper, so it's not fair to compare. ---oh, and Springsteen has always been a huge Suicide fan (they talk about this in the liner notes of the 2nd album). The similarities on Nebraska are not coincidental. |

And I'm not saying that people around here don't have substance, but those specific people don't have talent.
So, you see, those people have substance, but no talent.
See what I'm saying?
I'm saying that you have to have substance and talent to be as good as Saul Williams, and that rappers in Dallas don't have those things.
And I'm not saying that in general, but I'm saying that that's what I've observed.
And I'm not saying that what I've observed is fact, but I do have both substance and talent, so I should know.
And I'm not saying I know everything. |

Springsteen is great. People that make fun of the Boss just don't know his catalogue. Ghost of Tom Joad, Nebraska, the River, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run, Greetings from Asbury Park - its all great stuff. Sure, he slipped a few times (Human Touch, Luckytown, the Rising) but who hasn't? Hell - his most overlooked album is Tunnel of Love. Sure, Danny Federici got a little too much freedom on the synth, but the lyrics? Man oh man.. ever go through a breakup - LISTEN TO TAHT RECORD |

Maybe Saul Williams wasn't brought up because he'd make all of the posers in this town realize that the hip hop/dj scene around here lacks substance.
All flash, no substance...truly Dallas.
I'm not saying that people around here don't have talent, but talent is not substance. |

You silly little Springsteen critics should take a quick break from whacking it to your Delia's catalog and posting 'High School Musical' fan fiction some time, and compare 'Nebraska' with Suicide's first record. The odd similarities will blow your frickin' mind.
It's an essential. |

maybe its not a question of if anyone listens to springsteen or not, but rather a comment on how springsteen sucks, and anyone who listens to him sucks by association. |

623, I really listen to springsteen really! OMG. Not being ironic. I don't think liking springsteen is "in" right now anyways. Not that it matters. Good music is good music.
I dont see how he contributes to bad modern rock though. I'd blame that on Nirvana and Pearl Jam. |

I liked his bootleg acoustic series with Elvis Costello. That was ok, oh and his Pete Seeger covers record that was actually way more decent than I thought it would be. |

6:23,
I really listen to Springsteen. Start with Born To Run. If you like it, go to Wild, Innocent, and the E St Shuffle, then Greetings.
If you're still on board then, go with The River, and then back to Darkness. You've probably already heard Nebraska, and you can stop after that one...cause that's really where the essential albums stop.
However, his run from 72-83 or so is pretty salty. |

Just listened to the Draft stuff on MySpace. Not a bit of Springsteen there at all.
Just bad modern rock. Really bad. |
