we shot a mix vol. 2: ghosthustler

It might sound strange, but Denton folks probably weren't surprised today when they made their way to Pitchfork and found the face of Ghosthustler lead singer Alan Palomo starting back at them from the website's lead page. As most of our readers probably already know, Ghosthustler has attracted an incredible amount of attention (both nationally and internationally) in recent months on the basis of a very short resume: three original songs, a couple local shows and a Myspace page. And truth be told, the band is quickly becoming one of the area's most well known and highly praised independent/underground acts, despite a surprising lack of coverage by most of the local media.

We were fortunate enough to be able to talk Ghosthustler into creating the second installment of our We Shot a Mix series, and we're really glad we did. The track selections, ranging from Alan Vega to Simple Minds to Justice, reflect the band's influences quite well, displaying both the timeliness and timelessness of their synth/disco/glitch house aesthetic. And the mixing? Stellar. Looks like these guys are still on their "Do No Wrong" streak.

Download the mix, which they've titled "Blog House is Dead, Long Live Blog House," right here (UPDATE: the link is fixed) and check out their first music video for "Parking Lot Nights" below the track list:

1. Mr Oizo - Patrick 122
2. Does it Offend You, Yeah - Battle Royale
3. Chromeo - Call Me Up
4. Alan Vega - Saturn Drive
5. Crystal Castles - Air War
6. Jackson & His Computer Band - Radio Caca
7. Klaxons - Gravity's Rainbow (Van She Remix)
8. Bumblees Unlimited - I wanna be Your Ladybug
9. Daft Punk - Technologic (Vitalic Remix)
10. Simple Minds - I travel
11. Justice - New Jack
12. Chris and Cosey - October Love Song

Amazing video by Director Pete Ohs. I don't know about ass kissing. It is what it is -- a kick ass video.

Faux Fox and Ghosthustler do not sound anything alike, and if you come to the show on the 30th you'll have the perfect opportunity to enjoy the difference between these two fine bands. ;)

i didnt ask for any of this press, and i didn't intend on it. i sure as hell didn't kiss ANYONE'S ass to get it either.

sorry somebody liked the songs you pathetic jealous fuck.

which asses are Ghosthustler kissing to get press? Locally, only us and Gorilla vs Bear have even talked about them....

Faux Fox's songs are not nearly as good.

It's very stupid when a shitty Faux Fox knock off like Ghosthustler gets good press. They don't fucking deserve it. I'm sick and tired of shitty bands getting props for no reason. It's just scene politics ass kissing bullshit. Do write ups on bands that are actually doing something different for once.

This whole scene is so much about ass kissing and looking the part, but delivering shit from the musical end. I mean, look at the singer from Ghosthustler...he rips off Brian Campbell from Faux Fox(and even they're pretty played out) right down to his tight white jeans. And that song with the stupid 1983 bent synth...it would have been looked at as lame even in 1983.

"Yeah, we love Wire and Colin Newman and Suicide and all these cool post punk bands, but we sound like a 4th rate Gap Band being raped by Faux Fox. But hey, we like VIDEODROME, so, like, we must be cool!"

shit, everyone was going ga-ga over the Knife last year, and they barely play out. Get that Parking Lot Nights song oversees ASAP.

the video is sweet and the song is awesome. Great break guys, enjoy it. Keep putting out the great singles.

And, who cares if they are good live? I never much cared if any other electronic band is good live as long as they put out great tracks.

10:06 - I really have no idea what you're talking about.

And to append my post, I was not at all trying to say that GH isn't deserving of the attention, they are. They work really hard on those songs and of course they deserve it. Somebody heard it, liked it, and wrote about it. No reason to be bitter about good things happening to good people, shit.

2:00 - Don't think they're trying to be "cool" and "edgy", that mix is just shit they like and listen to every day.

while i enjoy the mix greatly it's not that cool.I got a 2 cd mix at Lollipop Shoppe a couple months ago that had the same Simple Minds song plus krautrock from Birth Control, post punk from Cabaret Voltaire & Killing Joke, hip hop from Edan & Public Enemy, soul from the Kashmere High School Band & Eddie Bo,Texas punk from Really Red & NCM & lots more.Of course Lollipop Shoppe isn't the hip new thing so you wouldn't care but maybe you should ask Captain Groovy to do a mix

I'm not really into this stuff but great story.......put some sharp songs together, play some shows, put a smart video together and you end up on pitchfork...that's fucking great, very inspiring.....

I would say that Daft Punk has had it's fingerprints all over just about everything that has been part of this french house/nu rave/dance punk/glitch thing thats been happening over the past few years.

Very nice video. But aren't these pretty much just daft punk songs?

You like Chromeo and Chris and Cozy "obviously"? What the fuck is that supposed to mean, Heather? That anyone who is cool must obviously like Chris and Cozy? You're so lame. Quit being so obvious about it.

You guys need an editor. Can I do it?
I would comment on Ghosthustler, but I feel I'm in some way biased.

Fuck you, Lars. It's all about what you have to "bring to the table", isn't it? Asshole.

God I hate that sleaze from Ghosthustler. I mean, they're all pretty sleazy, but the lead singer/Brian Campbell wanna be with the eye shadow looks sticky with vd. What a creep.

Anonymous says..2:54 PM

wow I'm not gay or anything.....but I would love to fuck the lead singer, I mean I would really fuck this guy in the face, he is that gorgeous! I think my girlfriend thought I was getting jealous at the show, but I probably wanted to fuck him more than she did!

Lars says..2:28 PM

you guys have to realize that, just because Ghosthustler is getting all this great press and hype, it's not because they are trying to make themselves out as hot shots or any shit.

they completely realize that they've got a lot of growing to do with pulling the live show together, and they're overwhelmed by all the expectations. they have turned down several headlining offers because they know they're not ready yet.

alan and gray are laid back guys with tons of respect for everyone else in the scene, it's not like they're some assholes getting the press cred, or that they believe they're the most "worthy".

Anonymous says..7:20 AM

this is amazing -is there any video credits? i would like to know who directed it and those kinds of things

stonedranger says..4:39 AM

612- You and I don't agree, but I'm glad we both realize it's a matter of taste more than anything else.

943- Wham! rules, FYI.

Beige says..4:20 AM

We've had four shows with 3 different bass players. So yeah. Getting the live show together has been a struggle. Especially because we're trying to write more material. We'll have it all sorted for the Granada show. Anyway none of this has shit to do with the mix.

then start a band and shut the fuck up.

: )

Anonymous says..2:43 AM

Yeah, that Hailey's show was some bullshit. That dude was dancing around and looking like George Michael during the Wham! era. That's not something I would aspire to if I started a band.

Anonymous says..2:43 AM

good for ghosthustler. I just hope they don't get fucked by the hype.

Anonymous says..1:13 AM

i thought the haileys show kind of sucked. not worthy of anything but local cred. seemed like it had a lot of potential. hype media fucked up there. sloppy (not in a good way). they need to grow a while as a band before all this bullshit.

Anonymous says..11:43 PM

bleh.

Anonymous says..11:12 PM

I just don't really get it. With only a myspace and a couple of songs Ghosthustler are propelled into the realm of Pitchfork hip-hype. I'm not saying Ghosthustler is bad but there are better bands out there to talk about. I don't know. Maybe it's just not my thing and that's why I find it not all that amazing or worthy of the attention.
