Sarah Ruth | Hammell on Trial (Dan's Silver Leaf)
Sarah Ruth is an extremely talented singer from Denton who has collaborated with everyone from The Night Game Cult to rock scholar Paul Slavens. Her adventurous approach and vocal acrobatics never get in the way of the mourningly beautiful quality of her singing. Hammell on Trial is fairly heavy-handed punk inluenced protest folk.

Grizzly Bear | The Papercuts | Peter And The Wolf (Club Dada)
Highly anticipated Dallas debut for Grizzly Bear, a group that actually made me somewhat more interested in their music as an unexpected byproduct of conducting their interview. I'm interested to see if they incorporate some of their electronic elements live or just go for it, stripped down and raw. The Papercuts play slow sad pop music that's saturated with dramatic organs and the hushed slur of narcoleptic vocals. Peter and the Wolf's tortured genius act can be a bit much but luckily it tends to be overshadowed by his capable backing musicians.

Anyone who likes jazz cannot afford to miss the astro-jazz quartet. Lyles West is the baddest. This is REAL music played by REAL musicians. Support creative, live music.

The Astro-Jazz Quartet will continue, (regrettably) without Karl Poetschke on Trumpet. This week (3/13) we will have a mystery guest in his place. March 20th, there is a different act at Pearl but after that the group will be playing regularly on Tuesdays. Please come out and show your support.

Thanks,
Dana S.

Karl Poetschke here. The last thing I need is another web account but...

It is nice to see some talk about my new project. Any feedback + or -
is constructive.

Re: "too much reverd"...sometimes I like extra mayo on my sandwich!

West will not be on the gig next week...maybe Drew Phelps who is also a wonderful upright player.
I will not be on the gig on the 13th and we will not be there on the 20th. After that I my be out of town for awhile so this last week was last time to here the band. It was a blast. Thanks for coming out.

dada is a hole, patios can't change the fact that the stage area blows and the bartenders charge too much for a drink. place is trying too hard to be hip with the kids

and a coke is still 2.50

....if it had wiskey in it they'd STILL be making money

Anonymous says..2:59 AM

i don't even think they have much to do w/ that place any more.... it's the fact that dave, part owner, is not around there as much as perhaps he should be. whoever the girl manager is is the one who allows the place to be run in such a manner.

i know because i've brought these problems (closing early, not being willing to comp a guy in a band a soda, asshole bartenders) up to dave and he seemed very disturbed by them, saying that he considered all of those things unexceptable and that there would be changes... but they still do it the same way. josh still works there, they still say that they stay open till 2am but almost always close by 1am, often before then.

jesus christ, enough w/the kyle faggot bullshit! jesus!!! oveo: that goes for you're lame ass as well...
as far as dada goes, that's all to do with amanda newman's faglinelive crap. which absolutely no one reads, mind you.

I 5th the notion about astro-jazz. Karl ain't happy five people were there to see these four COMPLETE FUCKING BAD-ASSES, nor should he be, but we were every one of us impressed enough to get on here and post about it. Make no mistake, these guys will boggle you mind. Lyles West' antique unpright bass that looks like he rescued it out of the Titanic (before it went down), Gerard Bendix' sick-ass polyrythms, Dana Sudborough's hands-so-fast-they're-blurry vibrophone madness, not to mention Karl's dirty, grainy, and serene lyricism .... which has always been there, I might add, with reverb or without .... but this is a fresh new context.

Better catch it next week coz it may be the last. And it's definitely the last for a while due to other commitments.

Plus, this Pearl joint is out of a timewarp, very oaken decor, no big loud TVs, and the welcome scent of a Havana stogie fresh out of the vending case. And, I might add, some divine Trappist Strong Ale on tap.

And easy enough for a mid-cities loser to find, at the corner of Pearl & Commerce right near 75/45.

I have no doubt ISIS ruled, but sometimes you just want to step into a place where you can kick your feet back and lose yourself on a Tuesday night.

Astro-Jazz? This must be a new band. Where else can I hear these guys. I know Lyles West is a MF bass player!!

I heard him with a band at the DMA about a month ago.

BTW- Cool blog. I just found this today.

And it won't just work if I get my own account, because people will still be able to get on here and say mean things to other people while just signing their comment "-Kyle". Do you see what i'm getting at Defensive Listening and Stoned Ranger? Shane English brought this up before and I think it is not only a good idea, but a safe one as well. We Shot J.R. is great as an informative tool and as a place to chat with friends, but anonymous posting really should be done with.

Kyle(how in the world would you ever know it was really me)Cheatham

Thanks.

Anonymous says..9:01 PM

That's funny. Now people are pretending to be me(2:53 PM is not me). This is why it is probably a good idea to stay away from We Shot J.R. until they get rid of anonymous posts. The next thing you know, people are going to start making racial/cruel/threatening comments towards others while using someone else's name.

Example:

Alex is a lard ass Whop bitch who should be shot in the face immediately.

-David

And i'm sure it could get WAY, WAY worse than that. I just can't support this anymore. Let me know when you get rid of anonymous posing, okay? Have a nice night!

never liked any of poetschke's other music ie. sivad and ghostcar but after hearing some good stuff about astro-jazz. i checked it out.

it's stellar. good for him for finally stepping up and showing his talent that has been hidden behind too much reverb for sooooo long.

To 10:55 AM: If Sarah was in fact "rootsy" now, would it truly make you think less or more of her as a human being? It seems like you're implying that there is something wrong with people changing their dress patterns. People change. What do you care?

Actually, let's talk about The Joker. I heard that Heath Ledger is going to play the role in the next Batman film. I really cant see him as The Joker, and I keep trying to think of who would make a good joker, but no one comes to mind. I think it's because Jack Nicholson nailed the role so well. Does anyone have a take on who would make a good Joker? I'm bored as Hell. Entertain me, slaves.

club dada is cool except for almost the entire staff!

$2.50 for a fucking coke if you're in the band???? REALLY??? i can't get a FREE COKE???

they ALWAYS close the place an hour early, i've been on stage watching the fuckers turning down people at the door around 1am, we've still got songs left, but they want to go home.... what the fuck? i can't just leave my job an hour early.... especially not if people are still headed in.

josh sucks.
bobcat is a pretty good sound guy, at least as far as speed is considered.... but that place needs some plastic surgery REAL bad.

Astro Jazz Quartet was worth it's weight in gold. Their set is earl. 8 to 11pm. So the "I have to work in the morning" excuse does not work. Really fucking good jazz played by super musicians. The first song I heard when I got there was Duke Ellington's Caravan which they completely disected, deconstructed and reconfigured into something completely new. They followed it with an equally impresive reworking of John Coltrane's "Blue Train". I hope they don't get swept under the rug. This is the best project I have ever seen Karl play in........By far.

Great reworkings of classic standards and extremely impressive original improv. Don't miss these guys. There had a 4 person audience. A real shame for such incredible music.

This is my pick to click:

ASTRO-JAZZ QUARTET

NO COVER! $2 drinks!!!!

Lyles West - bass
Karl Poetschke - el Trumpet
Gerard Bendiks - drumset
Dana Sudborough -- el Vibes

So far it has been fun. Deconstructing standards, playing originals, composing on the fly, reconstructing post bop fusion, and a whole mess of interesting rhythms. Don't miss this weeks installment. You too can be part of the party!
