Blitzen Trapper | David Vandervelde (The Loft)
This Gorilla VS Bear sponsored show features two Pitchfork darlings and their respective takes on classic and/or country rock, and none of it sounds at all like Wowee Fucking Zowee, as Pitchfork might have you believe. The amount of guitar soloing and almost adult contemporary feel-good melodies were somewhat surprising from both groups. It wasn't exactly what I was expecting from two acts I've heard so many good things about. Not surprising were the Eli Cash getups that bands like these always wear, as exhibited in these pics.

I wouldn't say it was mind blowing, but it was good fun. I'm not really much into genre hopping as much as they do it, but at least there's a lot to watch when they're onstage (6 dudes!)Very hard working, and super nice to boot.

I don't think you missed out by not seeing them last night, aaron, but next time around, I'll definitely go to give them a serious listen. They're going to be doing another run mid sept-mid oct.

and fuck! the NEW STAGE in the loft is awesome! yay!

Yes, Justine, I am. I really am. If no one gives a fuck, then why did you take the time to nail me? You love me and my torn-up ass, don't you?

Astronautalis will probably go on around midnight or so tonight....maybe late enough for someone to do both should they so desire.

well, at first listen, I thought they sounded like the dead. then the next song was nice, then the third got kinda electronic, and the fourth I forgot!

but I'm still going to check out this hype'n'shit. cos I like the view from the loft.

so come out, aaron. be my guest!

And I love 20 jazz funk Greats... one of the few MP3 blogs I respect.

Well I happen to like the Blitzen Trapper record, despite the fact that I assumed I'd hate it after Pitchfork gave it one of those "great take on tons of different indie rock influences all at once" reviews. I hate those.

That being said, Blitzen Trapper isn't the next coming of anything... just some good summer songs more than anything else. Pitchfork hasn't introduced me to anything interesting in a really long time... I can't tell if it's because I've changed or because they have.

R. Javelinn says..9:28 PM

I mean't 'good' for clearing out the cobwebs...but let's go with 'god', after all. Why not?

R. Javelinn says..9:26 PM

GvB seems to stick pretty close to Pitchfork's overall 'conventional wisdom'. Both of those resources are beginning to wear, I think. How much can someone post about Panda, White Denim, and Animal Collective, anyway? I guess a whole lot.

20jazzfunkgreats is god for clearing out those cobwebs and getting a different and, in my opinion, much more interesting take on what's out there...though they just posted Blitzen Trapper, too, so I forget my point...
