I second Boydy. Her three releases thusfar are all greatness, and each a little different from the others, so I recommend them all. The newest one, There's No Home, is very polished sounding in comparison to the others, but she doesn't skip a beat. |

sr, I agree that given the context of your definition of honest music, that grandaddy is terrible. and honest. blech. |

I had never heard the term "honest music" before, so it sounded good to me. I think of it as being something without kitsch or without a cutsie or marketing value to it. knowwhatImean?
amanda, but dont' you love that about english press? becuase I don't live in it, I think it cracks me up how endlessly enthusiastic the writers are. I can imagine them starting their days with a big plate of prozac. |

i have nothing to add about the robert gomez album but those blurbs just remind me how english music journalists act like they are describing their first kiss when they write about anything that's even remotely good.
there's only one writer for the independant on sunday that doesn't do that and tells it to you straight. the rest of the english press collectively soil their pants when the artic monkeys release anything. limeys. |

I'm guessing they're not trying to market the record to me, personally. Those reviews smell like they're written by the record company under pseudonyms. |

I really can't stand the phrase "honest music." What the hell does that even mean? I'm not bagging on the robert gomez record necessarily because I haven't heard the whole thing, but I find most music that gets described as "honest" to be totally boring. Grandaddy is a perfect example of what I'm talking about. |

somebody push the Robert Gomez record (brand new towns) up on that good records list.
it's seriously one of the best local records I've ever heard.
description:

album:
The Independant on Sunday hailed it as being "...the first truly great album of the year" in a five star review and Gomez continues to receive glittering reviews.
A keen observer of love and loss, Robert writes with finesse and restraint, his lyrics delivered with a hushed croon. "Brand New Towns" is certainly an album which provides the light during the grey days and it's no wonder The Sunday Times chose it as their CD of the week!
And...catch Robert on tour with Midlake and Stephanie Dosen in April [in europe]. More Details to follow!
"Becks softer moments, Grandaddy's playful pastorialism and John Lennon's melodic shifts haunt these songs beautifully" **** The Guardian
"Gomez's music shines" **** Sunday Times
I liked that somebody called it "honest music." |

man, I could not get into that jarvis cocker album. I just think it's really sub par for jarvis. BUT I do ADORE that track he did on the new air record. have you caught that? It's so much sexier than his solo album, and I expect that from jc. |
