Since there aren't really any noteworthy shows tonight, I would like you to tell us what you wish was happening in the form of anonymous comments. I'm really inspired by the parasitic role reversal in the form of "user based content" that many corporations have been pushing this decade. Hint: Try your hand at some fan fiction about how fun it would be to spend a Tuesday night with Stonedranger, Wildcat, Howard Bob Johnson, Dudes McRudes, Dudes Mctudes and myself. Guaranteed Laffs. You have no idea. |

song structure wise, and vocal timbre (which i like on every other pumpkins record) on the pumpkins cd keep me from enjoying it. jimmy c. is always good and exciting though. i just like the attention to detail that interpol put into each part of the song. the patterns they create, the drone. i dont know who recorded the cd but the drums always sound really good to me. i give the sp record a 4 out of 10 and i give interpol a 5 out of 10. |

I've just been taking care of bizness, and the dallas side of the scene splintered.
I wasn't posting much on the blog, so I dropped it, and I just wasn't using myspace at all.
I can't wait for sloppyworld to rise from the ashes. So I'll see some familiar faces again.
IMHO, the smashing pumpkins disc is better than interpol, though there are some low points on the disc(and it doesn't live up to past albums).
Most of the problems lie in the production and scope of the album. I know they are a very polarizing band, and I don't expect many people that read this blog to be fans, but at least it's not the third time they released the same album(interpol). I'd give it a 6.5 out of 10.
So I guess my wish for last night would have been listening to a new pumpkins album that was as good as the Gish/SD era, produced by Butch Vig. |

Even though most internet service providers assign dynamic IPs, those IPs are still within a recognizable range. They're not randomized. |

good post. I like the idea of a baseball/music weekend. I happen to love both.
And good point about the UK in 1977. |

(disclaimer #1: As this thread originally invited inappropriateness, I’m thinking why not here and now. This blog provides an outlet for scene politics, but as a musical tourist I only use (and appreciate) it for information.)
(disclaimer #2: This post is long and boring, like a personal blog entry, but I don’t do my own blog, so I’m taking up space on this one.)
Well, I tried another baseball plus rock vacation this past weekend, and it was mostly pretty good. I learned that there’s a permanent backup on 35 heading north into Waco – without accidents or anything – which made me a half-inning late for the ballgame, which cost me the free blanket they were giving away. My team, the visiting Baltimore Orioles, ended up losing to the Rangers. (They both suck about equally.) But what’s worse is that the game went into extra innings (overtime) – that plus my usual 15 or so minutes of getting lost trying to find 360 North made me fatally late for St. Vincent at Hailey’s. (I bought a ticket in advance – I dunno, do shows sell out in Denton?) At a quarter til midnight I walked in on the last half of her last song. She played one encore solo, and I was a little surprised (but not really) by the din of people talking. It happens plenty in Austin too. I agree that $15 is steep for a CD you’re selling on tour, but they were doing brisk business anyway.
I skipped Saturday’s game, which turned out to be the one my team won, ah well. In two too-short hours at the Dallas Museum I caught the “Societe Anonyme: Modernism for America” exhibit, which is absolutely amazing if you’re a fan of early 20th Century European avant-garde art, and the context of its introduction in this country. So many superstars. Also caught the solo show by Topher Crowder at Pawn Gallery in Deep Ellum. Some gloriously f-ed up stuff that must be seen up close. The opening party was the night before, but they had beer left over. Free beer.
I told the gallery dudes I was heading up to Richardson for rock action, and they scoffed, understandably. UT-Dallas couldn’t be more generic, which in a strange way made it a perfect backdrop for the musical “transgressions” that would transpire. As superficially ill-suited for punk rock as the square university halls and workingmen’s pubs of the UK circa 77!
Icarus Crane were goofy fun. I left campus to get a beer – they forgot to build a rathskeller into the student union, a major oversight – and missed the first half of Nouns Group, but they were enjoyable. Rockin’ violin, reminded me of the Dambuilders. They murdered (in both senses) the Mekons’ “Where Were You” – Langford would’ve approved. [Writer’s Embellishment: Then we “wrecked” the Rec Room, holding ping pong and pool balls hostage until the mild-mannered foreign-born pre-engineering students acquiesced to a mini-course of Punk Rock 101.]
Koji Kondo were hilarious – again, goofy fun. The lead singer’s herculean struggle to untangle a mic cord from its stand (and a pink feather boa) evoked Nigel Tufnel’s battle with the deli tray in “Spinal Tap.” Christian Teenage Runaway were a riot, though not the Runaways tribute band I was expecting. (If they did any Runaways covers, Christian-ized or not, I couldn’t recognize them.) Great energy. Great boots. Reminded me a little of Las Siux, from Spain.
I would’ve liked to have stayed for the last two bands, but I didn’t want to be super tired for the drive back to Denton, though the route was simple on paper. (Tollway?!) I was back in time to probably catch the last band at one of the clubs, but I decided to call it a night. I’m not rich by any means, but I treated myself to a night at the Wildwood Inn. It really is nice there, and the least expensive rooms seem worth it, even for Denton. Hell, it’s vacation, spend a little.
Sunday I killed some time at Banter then went to the ballgame. Hot as heck, and the Rangers beat my Orioles, whatever. Driving back to Austin, I saw the same darn backup on 35 heading north into Waco. Maybe another tollway in the middle of nowhere would fix that.
I’ve found this blog to be a useful guide to what’s going on up there. Looking forward to an extensive annotated preview of Wall of Sound . . .
Yes, I am a real person with an e-dress, do your worst.
