Le Loup | The Ruby Suns | Kyle Sherman Band (Lola's)
Oh great, it looks like I'm going to have to start driving to Ft. Worth to see shows now too. Thanks a lot Dallas. Anyway, the Ruby Suns are the latest Pitchfork approved pop band that apparently jumped on to the Summer 06's Tropicalia/Afro-beat bandwagon and decided to give it a go in the form of a sort of cute indie pop group. As annoying as said trend can be sometimes, I think Ruby Suns pull it off about as well as anyone could. Their stuff could be dismissed as trendy hipster posturing or merely a Vampire Weekend for stoners, but for anyone who takes Sgt. Peppers as a base for good rock music, this is going to be pretty enjoyable group. Their songs are crafted with attention to detail and a requisite number of surprises to render them a few legs above other indie rock fashion victims who try this sort of thing. Headliners Le Loup are a band I admittedly don't know a lot about, and while I didn't exactly jump out of my seat when I downloaded their debut album last night, I suppose they pull of a pleasant enough mix of Arcade Fire, psychedelic folk and even one song that pulls from Silver Apples fairly successfully. Check "Outside of this Car" on the Myspace page. I'd show up at this late, however, in order to miss the Dudebrah blues of Kyle Sherman.

The Ruby Suns will also be playing a Good Records in store at 6pm. Sweet. Now I don't have to drive to Ft. Worth AND the shit's free, y'all.

It's What We Get (Hailey's)
I'm really enjoying the recent influx of show fliers that remind me of the cover of a Trapper Keeper from like 1991, and It's What We Get is doing pretty well in that department.

Taxi Fare (Zubar)
Last time I checked in at Taxi Fare, I heard a lot of 80's dancehall and newer stuff from the islands, and unless you're way cooler than me (highly doubtful), then Wednesdays at Zubar might be pretty much your only opportunity to listen to this kind of stuff.

A lawsuit? Ha. That's a good one.

Also, I am NOT censoring people because they are criticizing me. People do it all the time on here as I'm sure you know. Go ahead. Say something really critical about me. I won't erase it. The only comments I'm erasing are the ones that don't make any sense at all. I haven't erased ANY negative comments at all, actually, since you can't even really discern the tone of the comments I'm talking about.

Really? You're censoring people b/c they're criticizing you--but not people who call a person unconnected to this site an asshole?

You, sir, are BEGGING for a lawsuit down the line if you keep this up.

I think it's funny that Nate Deyonker talks so much shit about We Shot j.r. (seriously every other comment on DRC is about WSJR, look it up) and then you find out...he plays in a band that's put out by VICE MAGAZINE. That's like someone in the Weather Underground getting their feathers ruffled about the activities of the local Kiwanis club. Hey Nate, you're a fucking idiot. How's that for slobbing on your nob, you clueless, arrogant fucking prick?

defensive listening says..3:07 PM

Yeah, but I compared those Record Hop songs to "Repeater-era Fugazi" specifically, because...they sound kind of like that particular era of Fugazi. Last Men sound NOTHING like Fugazi, and are much more straight forward and harsh.

"It's fitting that Record Hop once went as Fugazi for Halloween, as I hear traces of the superior "Repeater"-era in the riffs of "Dognapper," "Yr War," and the aforementioned "Maths.""

damned if you do, damned if you dont. while i think the observers record of bullshit speaks for itself, and pete freedmans tenure hasnt been much of an improvement, i also think that this guy could have resurrected lester bangs out of his ass and you guys would still bitch.

considering the employer, its not necessarily unreasonable to have a knee jerk reaction, but jesus, cut him some slack for now at least.

Title: Denton's Last Men Impress with Fugazi-Influenced Hardcore
Also: Eric Pulido and Robert Gomez start new label

By Dave Sims
Published: April 10, 2008

Don't let the recent national attention paid to melodic, songwriting-focused acts such as Doug Burr and Midlake fool you: Denton bands can be aggressive and dark. Really. Doubt that for a minute and Last Men will be on your ass like Henry Rollins in a slightly bad mood. Well, not really, because it turns out Last Men are actually pretty nice guys. But you get the idea. Their opening set for Record Hop's CD release party at Dan's Silverleaf on Thursday, March 27, was an impressive display of tightly-controlled, Fugazi-influenced hard-core, eliciting comments such as "revelation" from Record Hop's Scott Porter. Record Hop's own performance was a jaw-dropping sonic and visual synthesis, aided by Martin Iles and his how'd-he-do-that, musically-synced video montages, mixed in real time. Think: Exploding Plastic Inevitable meets Clockwork Orange.

In other album-related news, it turns out Bella Union labelmates Eric Pulido (of Midlake) and Robert Gomez are starting a new record label: Nova Posta. It already has a record scheduled to come out late this summer, Matthew and the Arrogant Sea's debut full-length, Family Family and the Magic Christian. The two also have plans for an anthology of Denton music in the mold of Quality Park Record's 2000 compilation Band-kits. Pulido and Gomez have high hopes for the label, which will work with Georgia-based Team Clermont (Flaming Lips, Death Cab, White Stripes) for public relations, and North Carolina-based Redeye (Bjork, Widespread Panic, Liam Finn) for distribution.

Speaking of collaborations, Pinebox Serenade banjoist/vocalist Nick Foreman has reconstituted his one-man solo act, Dust Congress, with marimba, oboe, trumpet and the omnipresent Ryan Williams from The Baptist Generals on upright bass—and the unplugged immediacy of the band's new digs suits Foreman's Harry Smith-soaked chamber folk like a capo on a Gibson Hummingbird. Dust Congress' Saturday, March 29, set at Rubber Gloves was a bracing contrast to Shiny Around the Edges' follow-up set of jagged, emancipated dissonance, but just as mesmerizing. In addition to the full-length record Foreman plans on releasing sometime this year, he's currently working on a 7-inch release for Paper Stain records and a possible shared 7-inch project with The Angelus' golden-throated Emil Rapstine. Plus, he plans to tour the southeast in May. Who says Dentonites don't travel?

Yeah, and Dave SIms is going to make you all so famous because he works for Paste Magazine. Good one, Pete Freedman. Nice way to suck Denton's dick and earn respect. Everyone with half a brain cell sees right through that bullshit. The rest of the fame hungry idiots stupid enough to fall for that will get what they deserve.

OMG THERE IS A NEW WRITER WE CAN ABUSE says..10:07 PM

from DRC:

Greetings. My name is Dave Sims and I've been retained, sort of, to write a weekly column for the Observer covering Denton music. It will be ~450 words, not yet titled, first one is coming out this week, to accompany a feature article on Denton written by Pete Freedman.

...

So...if you're so inclined, pile on with thoughts, rants, etc. What would you like to see covered? Not only in terms of underappreciated bands/acts/venues/house shows, but the Denton music community in general.

A bit about myself: I've lived in Denton for 13 years, work in town just off the square, and I've been a part-time freelance music writer for 7/8 years, mostly for Paste Magazine. I'll be out to see at least 2-3 shows a week, probably meeting a number of you and bugging you for contact info, news, etc. (if I haven't already)

There it is. Engage.
