It's easy to do mashups. It's hard to do them well.

^ Fair enough. My point remains the same though... the magnitude of that album is stunning to me b/c of the amount of material crammed in.

I'm not a DJ so maybe "mashing" that all together is easier than I'm imagining, but it just seems like he has a special ear to piece all that together.

Adam, what you just described is a blend, mashups are the more heavily produced stuff that Girl Talk does, you had it backwards.

adam says..9:55 PM

4:38 - let me try to articulate a little bit.

To call these guys mashup artists is a disservice... mashups typically layer 2 songs together - acappella vocals from one song over music from another song. Any kid with a computer can attempt that.

But take a look at the ammount of material used in Girl Talk's "Night Ripper" album (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_Ripper) - i don't even want to count all those but probably over 150 samples! And they flow together amazingly to the point that when i hear an original on its own, the Girl Talk tweak of it pops in my mind.

I would never lump this in the mashup category b/c it is on such a grander scale.

Just my 2 cents.

actually 11:07 said that, 12:41 was quoting.

But that aside...

Having formed an opinion by listening, and not liking, is not ignorant. Ignorance in this case would be not listening.

If you really like it, that's cool with me man. But why do I never see reviews or anything articulate about what makes either of those guys so special to so many people?

"Diplo and Girl Talk? Remixes and mashups are fucking lame. give me substance and originality. They are the equivalent of a cover band in my eyes(those shitty ones that do their own version), and the songs they cover(remix/mashup) suck.

This is just ignorant.

12:41pm

you get the award for the most ignorant statement of the day. I went to see Diplo at Hailey's last year. If you saw him live you would understand why he is so hyped. I don't really care for Girl Talk's records, but I hear he puts on quite the live show and really knows how to work a crowd.

12:41 -

This isn't about cool. I am just trying to figure out the almost universal nod of approval these acts have been getting on sites that talk about independent music. I find it odd when so many people, who are usually at each others throats about their opinions, agree with each other.

So... does everyone know about Dallas's war against DJs, Dance Halls, and electronic music?

No? Well that's because it is not being made public.

Right now every club, bar, and tattoo parlor in Deep Ellum is scrambling to get SUPs.

What's an SUP?

A Special-Use Permit. If they can get this ridiculous mess of ppwk in by Wednesday, they have to go through hearings.

The main things they are looking for to ensure closure are things like police records, missed payments, and DJ/Dance Hall permits.

Did you just say "What the Fuck?"

I did when I was told that by a local club owner 2 nights ago by a Club owner who no longer has DJs or electronic music of any sort so their SUP will be approved.

DJs, noise bands, ambient music, hip-hop, dance, trance, bands like Ghosthustler, War Wizards, Undoind, Faux Fox, are all in this broad category, and no one knows.

In fact, this SUP law went into effect a year and a half ago, and the landlords and city hall kept it quiet.

So quiet that most of us just found out, and we found out by accident.

You are not supposed to know. I'm not supposed to know, and you're REALLY not supposed that this sort of crap is spreading. It is not just a Deep Ellum problem. Dockets are chock full of these types of proposals all over the DFW, Ft. Worth, Denton area.

Their biggest weapon: your apathy.

I can't believe people are buying into this crap, and acting like it's the coolest new shit. Yet I hear no discussion of why anyone actually thinks this shit is good."

writing music, or the creation of any art has always been about remixing, and mashing up..

i can't believe people still don't understand that crap.. and act like they are the coolest shit cause they think they figured out some sort of illuminti conspiracy.

Diplo.Diplo.Diplo!!!!

he is a bad ass, but what about Switch!!!!!!

If you take a look at this guys list of remixes. I guarantee if you have been to any events by The Party, Stereo On Strike, Flashlight party or any other Indie/banger crew some of the best party jumpers were his remixes or original tracks. If you can actually get in I promise this will probably be one of the best DJ shows you are likely see for a very long time.

diplo is bad ass...diplo + switch is monumental and not to be missed regardless of the venue

stonedranger says..2:46 PM

yeah, I like Diplo a lot as well, and I'm excited about this show even though I'm still debating whether or not I'll even try to get in.

I think one of the reasons you don't see coverage of shows like Diplo in other local music publications is that most of the others don't have staffers who are interested in or knowledgeable about dance music. I'm not saying that I'm an expert by any means, but most of the others seem to ignore it all together. I'm not sure why this is the case, but it seems strange-- to me, you can't tell the story of indie, experimental or underground music over the past five years without having a discussion about electronic and/or post-punk influenced dance music.

On the flip side, places like Suite are going to have to learn that if they book a DJ like Diplo, they're going to have to deal with a different kind of crowd showing up to their show. Strangely enough, however, this doesn't mean that they have to let any of those people in. At Flosstradamus, while tons of people were forced to wait outside in line like a bunch of fools, there were plenty of SMU girls and doucheholes inside having a good time. In fact, the place was packed.

So maybe Suite doesn't really have to do anything.

Dear Stonedranger,
I saw your Monday shout out to the Diplo show, and I wasn't really meaning you really. I guess I shouldn't be surprised that NONE of the other Dallas media outlets are even mentioning this show. Maybe I'm the biggest nerd ever (guilty), but Diplo is rad. It's not like he's one of those lame LA trust fund DJs. I just don't get the lack of editorial commentary. Same can be said for the Evan Hecox book signing tonight at Centre ("er"?) and his show on Sat night at Public Trust. OR why the fall gallery art walk by CADD has been ignored. Whatevs.

After reading the comments from Kid Sister on GvsB I sent Wes a link and warned him about the venue. He wote back and said he had just heard from others, etc...wasn't stoked.
I guess we can only hope his peeps talked to the venue and readers of blogs like this, fans of DJs like him, will have little issue getting in tonight.

Girl Talk vs. Spoon?
Girl Talk.

"How come there's no mention nowhere bout the Diplo show tom night?"

The only way of getting in that show is by getting on the list or buying a table and a $700 bottle of vodka.

Isn't M.I.A a terrorist? And so close to the day I will never forget...

stonedranger says..4:46 AM

it was on our "shows of note" on monday.

And if you're wondering why it isn't mentioned in other places, it might be because there hasn't been much promotion and the venue is weird.

I was extremely excited until I checked the calendar and realized I'm already going to the Of Montreal show that day. Screw these conflicting shows... 2 days earlier I have to choose between Girl Talk, Spoon, & Final Fantasy/Cadence Weapon all on the same night.
