I don't know a whole hell of a lot about Alice Coltrane to be honest (other than the obvious), but here is a link to an NPR story about her death, and here is a link to her allmusic page. And there doesn't appear to be anything happening around town this evening. |

I wrote a full page feature on Alice Coltrane (along w/ Pharaoh Sanders, and Sun Ra) when I was in highschool and to this day I fuckin still search for the experience I had upon first listen to her music.
Alice Coltrane is one of my top artist when hippin folks to new tunes, strange how many people dont know of her.
I missed the NPR interview, cause I listen to Country Gold Radio in my work truck and Free Jazz at home.
sidenote that might not matter but take it how you will...alice's "Journey in Satchidananda" was the exit music at Radiohead's Kid A during their houston,tx show. |

Monastic Trio, Ptah the El Daoud and Journey in Satchidananda were the first 3 albums I bought. I have really been diggin Transcendence recently. It's heavier on her incredible Harp playing and features her on stax style organ playing songs that strike a balance between deep soul music, gospel and Indian Chants. Her version of "My Favorite Things" off of World Galaxy is .......breathtaking to say the least. It's almost like she speaking to her husband through some deep spiritual connection.
My favorite is Lord of Lords. That album fuses classical harp, Indian classical music and Jazz. It is very film score like. And once again absolutely beautiful. Buy them all. They are all very rewarding experiences.
I'm a big John Coltrane fan to, I think Delmore up above hit the nail on the head. John and Alice are 2 different worlds.........in a very harmonius universe. Their son Ravi has been playing out with her over the past decade. I am curious to see what he is gonna bring to the table of the Coltrane legacy.
I am dedicating a chunk of my set to Alice Coltrane at Lost Gen this week. I am taking requests. |

A good friend of mine told me he liked Alice Coltrane's stuff better than her husband's. He's not a big John Coltrane fan, though. I am, but I'd never really heard AC's stuff. Wanz, you may have extolled her merits to me, but I can't remember. Anyway, I bought "Journey in Satchidananda" yesterday and listened to it a couple of times and it's fantastic. I love the instrumentation -- harp, sitar, bells, and oud along with the standard jazz instruments. I was thinking of getting "Ptah the El Daoud" as well. Does it also incorporate eastern intruments? I didn't hear any in the samples I listened to. If it doesn't, which other of her releases do? |

I wouldn't say she's overlooked because of her husband. If anything his name has helped her music reach more people.
Her work deserves serious attention and she was a serious artist -- not to be underestimated, undervalued or written off as "coltrane's wife"
but there are some very vital elements in J.Coltrane's work that aren't as prevalent in A.Coltrane's undeniably generous catalog
elements such as fury, chaos, anger & power
turning the ugliness of man around and blowing it back into the cosmos
while Alice is beautiful, serene, divine, practically soaking in feminine wonder and mystery
they are two very different worlds to me...
kinda like equating Patti Smith with Dylan... yaaaah, i can kinda see what you mean, but... not quite |

I'm not necessarily doubting you Wanz, its just that I'm a big Coltrane fan, and comparing anyone to him seems bold to me. |

check out Alice's music. That statement is not that bold. She is just overlooked because of her more famous husband. He did marry her for a reason and a lot of her records feature his old sidemen. |

Speaking of Jazz, on Friday nights at 2:00 AM, Mr. Robert Gomez is hosting afterhours jazz sessions... It's more of a coffee thing than a booze thing. Last week, we had some of the best players in town ripping it up until 5:00 in the morning. |

A little gush. Anyone that is close to me knows how big of a fan of Alice's work I am. I have a song from over a decade ago named after her. Whenever I am trying to find my center her magical harp would guide me from the harshest of storms. Her piano playing is truly one of the most beautifully expressive and emotionally moving experiences I have ever had....and still have. It's no wonder John fell in love with her. Only this woman could have been with that man. My only joy from this great loss is that Alice and John are hopefully out there somewhere keeping the univers in harmony with their melody.
If you have never listened to her music go find it NOW. You will not regret it. She is every bit her late husbands equal.
We will miss you Alice. Your music has made this ugly world a lot more beautiful. |
