VietNam | Current Leaves | Emil Rapstine (Rubber Gloves-Denton)
This will be an excellent chance to catch two of the area's most accessible and intriguing acts, as both the psyche rock country pop of Current Leaves and the dark, spaced out americana of Emil Rapstine's The Angelus seem to appeal to broader categories of people in the area than many of the other local bands we discuss on this site. The best part is that both of them are actually quite good. Vice Records' Vietnam is a bit difficult to put your finger on, but they seem to be mainly influenced by bluesy 60's hard rock and Velvet Undergound. I remember reading a Pitchfork review claiming that they sound like Spacemen 3, but I absolutely dont hear any of that on their self titled debut full length, which is due out next year. The tunes I've heard are solid if a bit too straight forward at times, but I like most of the tracks. And no, they're not a typical Vice Records band, although they are from New York.

am i the only one to catch that this Emil Rapstine character is a complete rip off of josh pearson from Lift To Experience. both in sound and appearance. it would be cool if he ripped morrisey or somthin but why rip a guy that lives in the sdame town???

- who are you? More refugees from the Austin 90s scene I see ... back before the Trail of Dead got really good and then sold out and began to suck with the visciousness of a Tuesday night at the Steamboat.

Yes, the Prima Donnas were the best house party band ever. That is why I hate Faux Fox so much. I have seen that thing done right, and it was the Prima Donnas.

RE: Vietnam, I only saw them a couple of times probably 5 years ago, but I really didn't care for them too much, kinda like the other guy described, just wobbly indie blues rock. And I really like Spacemen 3 AND the Black Angels. Then again, that was a long time ago.

Colleyville? I live in Hurst. Weird.

VietNam sucked. like putting reverb on some blues licks is "groud-breaking."

also, what was with their merch guy constantly getting on stage and wandering around?

That rumor is true...they will be right next door to Club Dada!

I had a great time. The line up was diverse yet cohesive and each performer was highly enjoyable.

Vietnam were great. Much better than the last few times that I've seen them come through town. Don't really think they sound much like the Black Angels. Current Leaves sounded great as well with their new guitar player.

Yes. Mike Gerner ( I forget was he goes by now) was in those bands, as well as the Primadonnas, aka Julius Seizure. Josh (the other guy) is actually from Colleyville.

How was the show? Had to miss it.

was this the same Vietnam from austin that has members from carbomb, 100 watt clock, and tune in tokyo? just curious. too many bands with the same names popping up every couple of years

weird that a band called Vietnam sounds like Black Angles since every Black Angels song is about Vietnam...

does anyone know what pitchfork's obsession with the Game (the hip-hop artist) is all about?

I saw Vietnam play in Austin two years ago or so and it involved one guy wearing a blanket over him the entire show then attacking the audience with a Tamborine during the last song. I am pretty sure everyone was high and they played about two minutes worth or music in thirty minutes. It was extremely uncomfortable and awkward but you could some how tell that they were good when they played real sets.

They're kinda the ... I was gonna say Secret Machines, but I'm gonna say Calla instead ... of Austin. Moved to NYC to "make it," and somehow actually did, sorta.

oh yeah and they're not from new york. they're from austin. but they live in new york...whatever...guess it don't matter anymore. it's been quite some time.

you have to see them live to get the Spacemen 3 action.
vietnam is pretty sweet.
i think black angels are really similar. but vietnam brings it. at least the one time i'v seen them. no no. i forgot i saw them a second time and they sucked. but they still pretty much rule in my book. i wanna go see the show fo' sho.
