FRIDAY:

The Party w/ DJ Nature/Sober/Select (Zubar)
The monthly Dallas version of Nature's Rubber Gloves Party is always packed and loud and a whole lot of fun. If you want to hear the latest in just about every relevant genre of dance music, this is the place you need to be tonight. Bmore, dubstep, one drop, electro pop, hip hop, grime, and just about anything else you can think of. You will be hard pressed to find a more forward thinking DJ night in town. And its free, bitches.

The Pink Spiders | Strange Boys | Chief Death Rage (Doublewide)
This of course is the good rock show in big D tonight... not only will Dallasites get a chance to see Chief Death Rage, one of Denton's best bands as of right now, but you can also check out the Strange Boys's new material for yourself. The Pink Spiders sound like pretty generic pop punk to me, but whatever.

Unknown Pleasures w/ DJG (Cavern)
Dj G spinning underground 80's electro, goth and everything else.

SATURDAY:

The Willowz | Jack With One Eye | Prayer for Animals (Club Dada)
We've never had the chance to see the Willowz live, but I've dug em ever since their appearance on the soundtrack for Eternal Sunshine. I really think they'll put on a good live show since you just can't go wrong with loud, bratty psyche influenced garage rock. I'm also looking forward to seeing what Jack With One Eye has been up to.

Sean Kirkpatrick | Will E. Lee (SHQ Denton)

Dub Assembly (Wax-2653 Commerce)
A solid all dub event featuring several different DJs that we just don't have time to link right now.

Tilly and the Wall | Pony Up | Ashburne Glen (Hailey's)
I mention this show mainly because I'm pretty sure a lot of people reading this blog are into Tilly and the Wall... I'm not, but I'm doing this all for you! Pony Up is another one of those bands that can only be described as "Tampax Commercial from the early 90's" music.

Jolie Holland | Bosque Brown | Sonny Smith (Sons of Hermann Hall)

SUNDAY:

Ghostcar (Windale Tavern)
Show starts around 930 at Windale, an infamous Greenville dive bar just south of Whole Foods, and is free as far as we know. Ghostcar is one of the few long running gems of DFWd music, and you absolutely have to see them live in order to know what I mean.

Be Your Own Pet | Awesome Color | Red Monroe (Gypsy Tea Room)
I guess this is the Thurston Moore understudy tour or something, but I have to admit that I probably like Be Your Own Pet more than I should... yes, they kind of sound like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and yes, most of their songs take from the most obvious dancepunk/post-punk references that you can think of. And yes, I still like them enough to give this show a shot. They do what a lot of other people are doing with an intensity and precision that your little brother's favorite MTV2 band couldn't imagine. Pretty much the same logic applies to Awesome Color, except you can just plug in "Thurston Moore's vocals" and "70's hard rock" into the appropriate places in the first sentence. I have also heard that they are very engaging live. Guess we'll see. Props to Red Monroe for getting on the bill of such a high profile show.

People in bands are used to bad gigs. If they can't deal, then they need to switch lines of work.

RE: Be Your Own Pet

Hire 16 year old girls and they will act like 16 year old girls.

I don't know who booked The Willowz into Deep Ellum, but that was a bad move. There was like, their cheering section of a few people up front, and that was about it. It was so odd. When I was leaving, I saw them all talking on the way out, and it was kind of like a "Oh well" shrugging their shoulders kind of thing. I'm suprised they didn't walk out, but they seemed like nice people, and finished the gig. Hopefully next time they'll have someone handling the show who books them into a place with more visibility. They still played the show as if there were tons of people there. I doubt they made much off of the whole thing.

yeah, that really sucks. I think a lot of people just refuse to go to Deep Ellum for any reason (other than a Gypsy show), and a lot of people assume that stuff at Club Dada is going to be cover bands and other assorted crap.

I didn't make it to the show, but I'm shocked that they didn't get a good turnout. Actually, no I'm not. The show wasn't promoted very well, or at least word didn't get out for whatever reason, and the result is that we have another quality touring act with a bad taste in their mouth concerning dallas. Like someone in another thread mentioned, Dallas has been getting passed over for Austin for years, and I've noticed that over the past year and a half, we are now getting passed over for Houston, which is pretty pathetic. Whats even worse for those of us that live in Dallas proper is that the good touring acts that still do come through here play in Denton more often than not... and I don't blame them.

I had no idea the willowz even played...I would have liked to have seen them. I think they're rad.

No one was at The Willowz show because A) Club Dada is a retarded place for them to have played B) It clearly wasn't promoted at all. Those kids do well for themselves in most other places, and this appearance told me that the word wasn't out. At all.

Really sad. I walked in there and only saw a couple people beyond their girlfriends or something. Hate to say it, but they should've played Denton. No one goes to Club Dada because no one knows anything is even going on there. Hence, one small listing in the Club Dada stack in the Observer not being nearly enough to promote a band that draws large crowds in other cities they play. This is why Dallas gets a bad rep and people don't come back here. A shame.

BAAAAhahahaha! Did anyone else see this??? Quote from Sam Machkovech re: the Gypsy show last night:

"Most of us split after RM's set, and good thing--headliners Be Your Own Pet stopped after barely 30 minutes when lead singer Jemina Pearl flipped out, threw her microphone and dashed backstage. The rest of the band, after realizing she wasn't coming back, said something along the lines of "Denton's better, anyways" and called the show off. (The one Dd staffer who remained tried to get his nipple signed by Jemina after the set...bad move, dude. His insurance plan doesn't cover ripped nips.)"
BAAAhahahaha! That's sux, man! I know SOOOooooo many people who were excited to see Be Your Own Pet. Do we think this was a pre-planned rocker moment, or that she really is a schitzoid? Thoughts? Similar experiences?

What's up with noone being at the Willowz? They tore it up. Not to mention that Jack With One Eye is getting better and better. This was their best show that I've seen from them. I wasn't there for Prayer for Animals, but I really like what they have on their myspace. I've been looking forward to this show for so long. I really couldn't believe that there weren't more people there. I guess everyone went to see the Slits in Austin. I don't know.

Andre Williams tonight at All Good Cafe.
From the All Good site:
"Mr. Rhythm" is a R&B legend, and you may not even know it. He wrote "Shake A Tail Feather," and sang such uber-raunch as "Bacon Fat" (covered by the Cramps), "Greasy Chicken," and the epitome of songs about little girls, "Jail Bait" (cited a few years ago by Keith Richards as one of his favorite records of all time). He worked at Motown and Fortune and with Ike Turner.

He was hired and fired as staff producer and A&R man numerous times by Barry Gordy at Motown. Mr. Rhythm (as he was nick named by Redd Foxx) produced records for Mary Wells, Stevie Wonder, The Dramatics, The Chi-Lites, Ike & Tina Turner, and even penned material for George Clinton’s Funkadelic!

Andre was always a wild man with the ladies and never said no to a party and by the 1980’s Andre Williams found himself down and out – living on the streets and at the end of a crack pipe. After a few hard years in... er... retirement, he stormed back a few years ago with a record of smutty garage punk called "Silky" recorded with members of the Demolition Doll Rods and the Dirt-Bombs.

Since then, he has enjoyed a resurgence of popularity with his raunchy R&B and soul stylings. Andre tells it like it is, and if you get all bashful and shit with the blue language, you might want to steer clear--this guy can make Redd Foxx look like Bill Cosby."
