Well, we finally actually made this thing. After a couple of months of procrastination and just like, talking about it and stuff, we actually put together a list of songs and magically uploaded them to the world wide web for your consumption.

This is simply a collection of 19 songs from local artists that have impressed us over the past nine and a half months. Some of the songs are relatively new, some are relatively old, but they're all very solid.

There is a bit for everyone on here. Psychedelic rock, free jazz, folk, punk, synth pop, country, and a lot of other stuff in between and all over the place. What surprised us the most when we first listened to it was how enjoyable it was all the way through. I wondered aloud on several occasions how an all local collection of music could sound this strong and diverse. But it does. Listening to it straight through provides pretty decent evidence that there are some good bands around here, and we hope that everyone who downloads it will spend just an hour listening to all the songs in order, because that is really part of what is so much fun about it. People that are new to some of these bands will be pleasantly surprised with what they find here, and I think a lot of you out there who have heard most of these songs before will at least enjoy listening to all of these very diverse artists in one little package. Its just over an hour long and there is no talking or bullshit, only music.

Of course, the 74 minute length means that it will all fit on one CD for your burning pleasure, but we'll also be distributing CD versions of Projection for free at Good Records in the coming weeks. We're not sure where they'll be or exactly when they'll be there, but we'll let you know when we figure it out. I would expect to see them within a week or two.

We'd also like to thank Lindsay Graham for assisting us with all the technical stuff and helping us make Projection sound as good as it does. Some of the recordings are better than others, but Lindsay did a great job with what he had. The mix will also be available for download over at Lindsay's DConstruction, so you can stop by over there and say hello. Maybe they'll actually update the site some time soon. Here is the downloadable link for Projection:

http://media.libsyn.com/media/dconstruction/Projection.mp3

Just got done listening and I enjoyed it. Not everything is exactly my taste but that is what is cool about the area as it has a decent amount of diversity in sounds. Quite a few songs on here are very good.

And as was mentioned, this is great for exposure for all these bands.

Looking forward to the next one.

Not a musician at all, you wouldn't want me playing a show, it would be shittier than all of these shitty bands.

My main point was that all of the effort these musicians are putting out is going to waste in D/FW.

There is no room for art in the cultural wasteland of D/FW. The sooner you musicians realize that and get out of here, the happier you will be.

i have been a recording engineer for about 15 years now and i gotta say that the guy from deconstruction is completely clueless. attending classes at dallas sound lab would actually help this guy out quite a bit because currently, the people recording their own music at home on four-tracks know a lot more about what their doing than he does.

teenage symphony, don't let this guy record your music!! in fact i would discourage anoyone from letting this guy record their music, at least for a couple of years, until he's learned how to do what he's trying to do. he shouldn't even be talking about audio engineering because he's just making himself look like an idiot.

stonedranger says..2:25 AM

And just to calm everyone down a bit, I spoke with EAB about the mix and told them to give it a listen. They did, and said that they had no problem with it at all.

They seemed excited about the whole thing and I am too. Thanks to Gorilla vs Bear plastering our link all over his blog today (what the fuck would this town do without that guy?) we have already had people download the podcast from Dallas, Denton, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, London, Leeds, San Antonio, Lisbon, Portugal, Houston, and others that I can't remember right now.

I understand people getting pissed about the mixing thing, and about Lindsay's comments. I know that lo fi, mono and other methods of recording are often used by choice for artistic reasons, and we really should have checked before we did ANYTHING to the recordings at all. A lesson learned. But I think the overall impact of this mix will be nothing but positive for everyone (especially the bands), and I hope everyone can get past their differences with DConstruction and enjoy a selection of great local music.

The real story here isn't We Shot J.R. or Dconstruction, but rather the bands and their songs. I'd really like to continue talking about them.

a) pythagorean guitar. HA!

b) mono is the kissing disease

stonedranger says..12:31 AM

And with the Eat Avery's Bones track in particular:

the track was really loud compared to the rest, and with the overall volume of the mix, it had to be brought down a bit because it would have just killed your ears. Seriously, for whatever reason, if we would have left it the way it was (straight off the myspace page), most people probably would have skipped over it simply because it would have hurt to listen to. Again, I can't explain exactly what was done, but it was all that I knew to do in order to make it work.

I got permission from every band on the mix to use their songs, and have told them that if they have any problem with what we did, we will certainly make whatever changes they want. Again, anyone that reads this knows that I would never try to be like "dude bro, here is how a REAL musician records their jams." I just wanted the mix as a whole to be listenable as a whole, which was hard to do since we were working with such a varying degree of recording styles, etc.

stonedranger says..12:13 AM

I'm not a sound engineer, so I'm not sure exactly what was done on the track. What I do know is that nothing was altered and its not like we fucked with the levels of the instruments as compared with one another or "remixed" shit or dig anything like that. We just tried to make the volume levels on all the tracks even so that one song wasn't super loud and another wasn't super soft.

I certainly wasn't trying to make any substantive changes to the songs, and we didn't. Anyone that has read this blog knows that I don't share Lindsay's points of view on many of the bands and recordings that he discussed. The Night Game Cult track is actually one of my favorites on there, and I know that many of the tracks were simply demos, like I said before. I personally like everything on the mix, obviously, and many of my favorite bands OF ALL TIME generally recorded themselves with pretty shitty equipment. I just wanted everything to sound decent as a whole.

"I love listening to slow, maudlin Depeche Mode songs in the shower while a Saturn V rocket launches next door..."

Well, that's pretty much what we were going for, so I'm glad it worked! I'm sure David Willingham will chuckle at the "horribly recorded" comment. I know I did.

As far as it being mono, I had no idea, I think it was downloaded as an MP3 from our website. If this were really an issue, you should have contacted us. We could have provided the file in any manner you required... I think. Honestly, it's never been an issue that was brought up before.

Oh, and for the curious, the Saturn V was the uber talented Mr. Jeff Helland from White Drugs on destructo bass. It was always awesome to play music with him.

I mix all my 4-track stuff to mono because, after awhile, you realize panning things is a cheap way of covering up a bad arrangement. If a song doesn't work in mono, it's probably because the song doesn't work at all.

"Eat Avery's Bones. Whew. You should have heard this track before I got a hold of it. It's mono, fellas. And distorted so badly, it's painful. I'm not a fan of that Pythagorean guitar, either. These sort of Crimson/Belew/Holdsworth lines are fun every once in a while, but, yawn, get over it. You can play weird shit. Good for you. I will say, though, that I think a good producer who hears and understands this band (and isn't completely locked out by the band's youthful arrogance, hypothetically) could make a good record with them. They've got drive and
inertia. No denying that."

This might be the worst paragraph I've read about music since Andrea Grimes gave her "anything to make a buck" speech about five months ago. For starters, what makes you think a lot of the bands even care about distortion and whether or not it's in mono? Are you a Dallas Sound Lab graduate? Or even worse, Full Sail? You had a website dedicated to Podcasts for crying out loud! You're part of the problem. Do you think local bands with no money should go into big fancy Neve console studios so people like you can play them on little tiny shitty sounding Ipods? We're glad you know what midrange and stereo is, unfortunately you don't anything about the actual music. Wow, good reference on the King Crimson guitarists. Have you heard any real underground rock music in the last ten years? The style of guitar playing on this track is nothing to call out and your criticism of it shows that you're probably living in about 1995 as far as "indie rock" is concerned. In fact the guitar part is actually one of the hooks in the song because it mimicking the (rather simple) keyboard parts. Does that make the keyboardist Rick Wakeman, smart guy? Sorry they aren't ripping off Kinks or White Stripes riffs like all the shitty Dallas Pop bands you worship (who record in "professional" studios). These youngsters actually have taste and you're bitching at these eighteen year olds for knowing how to play their instruments. The female bass player is in twelfth fucking grade!!! I hope she never grows up to be one of the worn out and played out (to use your term) losers that have been boring many of us to tears in Dallas (and hang around like the wannabe rockstars they are at All Good, Cosmic Cafe etc.). These kids are actually knocking the bullshit off of this pathetic and anemic music scene. Youthful Arrogance? Are you supposed to be humble? I hope this band doesn't ever meet a good "producer" who would probably make them play to a click track and water down their music until it sounded like D.A.R.Y.L. Luckily for me they're probably smart enough to align themselves with someone who isn't afraid of punk/noise/hardcore/ etc. and they'll avoid the tired old guard of Dallas popsters like yourself forever. Thanks for making DFW so lame for so long. But your time is up.

so very typical that the only thing they can get out of this mix is a fucking red monroe song and his unapproved alteration of someone elses art (IDI AMIN track).

10:11... I already do! Here's my latest...

We have nothing
Except for our shoes
I wander through the club
And all the local rockers
Stare at their shoes
And tomorrow
I'll kill you on my blog
And tie your laces together
So you will fall
And then your dad blew me
And it was good
good
good
living with ya
uhoh
it was goooood
livin with ya
wuh oh
it was gooooood
livin with ya

10:07 - you should write lyrics for Blue October!

10:04, yeas the image perfectly captures the isolation and alienation that one often feels in a local rock scene. Like, the walls that I build, on my parcel of land, they are all that keep me safe. Through song and effort, we can feel secure in a cold and grey life. We will open the door and let you in, but ultimately our art is ours, and I will feed you at my table, but after the album ends, you must again face the desolation.

And your dad blew me!

I really like the cover. It kind of sums up the cold aesthetic of suburbia that is growing out where the pastures and the prairies used to linger. Old and new.
Exactly like your mix, really. Where Tree Wave and the Theater Fire can co-habit and interpret, in entirely different ways, the changing environment that surrounds them.
Allright, let the homo-references and jokes ensue.

we are in fact going to do another one of these in the not too distant future... and the mix is not intended to be all inclusive, its just a mix of local stuff we like. Nothing more nothing less.

Yes, clearly. Just like if you like a movie, you must star in it. Or if you like a TV show you're on it. Or if you suck my cock I'll fill you full of hot sexiness.

GO BACK TO YOUR JOB AT SHARPER IMAGE AND EAT SOME FORKS. CUZ YOU ARE A DICK ANd THATS WHAT DICKS DO.

I like the mix tape though! Pretty cool!

Regarding track markers: MP3 doesn't support chapters. M4A does, but that's not as universal a format. We decided to forgo the track markers in favor of the MP3 format.

Thanks for the start times; that's helpful.

Cool haven't been on here in a while.

Clarification: I had nothing to do with the song selection, only the editing and mastering.

I'll not rise to the bait, regarding your comment about how I spend my time.

Anonymous says..3:37 PM

I'm just saying, since dconstruction has obviously spent months on this, because you clearly haven't been devoting any attention to your blog or record label, I figured it would be more well rounded.

Anonymous says..3:36 PM

you can put depeche mode covers on your compilation?

me personally, i dont like bands that cover depech mode. especially accapella.

dconstruction.org says..3:32 PM

I don't think it's a "list."

Anonymous says..3:20 PM

I'll get it out of the way, but there are some glaring absences in regards to this list. Hopefully you'll do this every couple of months?
