it list : thursday

Trying to work on some posts for tomorrow and next week, so I'm going to have to make this short:

Abiku | Girls Rise With Heat | Judascow/ Blonde Girls (1919 Hemphill Ft. Worth)
Want to go to a goddamn noisy rock show tonight? Willing to drive to Ft. Worth? Then 1919 Hemphill is your spot, as hardcore/early industrial machines Abiku sound like they will probably kill you if you show up to their show. I'm not the biggest fan of the screamy punk side of what they do, but I really like the sound of their synths and the rhythm attack.... Check out "Document" on their Myspace page.

Of course, you've also got DJG's 80's night at Hailey's, Zoo Tv videos upstairs at the Cavern, and Hip Hop at the Slip Inn.

We'll have more stuff later today.

AND ALMOST FORGOT (I've been doing that lately)

Mara Lee Miller of Bosque Brown will be playing a solo set for free on the UTD campus. She goes on at 1030, and David Shackelford of Johnny Blackmouth will start things off at 10. The show will take place on the patio outside of the Student Union at UTD in Richardson. I bet this will be a great show, as well as an opportunity to meet some of the cool UTD radio kids.

I stand corrected, anon 7:31, you're absolutely right. That hit me after-post when I thought of Blind Lemon Jefferson as well.

And anon 12:10, based on your statement, shall I also toss out that vinyl collection, favorite t-shirt and my grandma? 'Cause they're old.

The part where you called her "bitch" was like super convincing.

hey nerder: what is old is to be discarded. keep you're eyes focused would you bitch?!?

by the way, anyone heard the new gerry and the pacemakers???

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

some good "1st wavers" were leadbelly&BessieSmith

oh wait, and I gotta add Gayle Hess to the list of worthy first-wavers. even if you didn't like Cafe Noir, she's an amazing musician.

absolutely, anon 3:55, absolutely. i suppose i should have clarified before, but i was speaking more of popularity and style--not making a statement on what is necessarily "good" from days of yore. i do think it's worth applauding that bands (in this case, Garza--like him or not) give back to those that gave them a start though.

and SD, "suckness is constant" rules. my screen thanks you for the spit-take.

Yes Fever in the Funkhouse is hardly worth celebrating. 90% of those 1st wave ellum bands sucked ass, then and now. The only exceptions I can even think of besides the new bohemians (if you count them) are Three on a Hill ... it wasn't until Course of Empire and the turn of the 90s that it really got better

My complaint would be that Garza sucked back then as much as he does now. Pop music is cyclical for sure, but suckness is constant.

nerver says..10:29 PM

8:00 a.m.: I see by your 1997 comment you got the point of the Garza article: The music scene is cyclical. What's old is new again. Reinvented, whatever. Beyoncé is another word for Janet. Christina is another word for Madonna. Popped collars, etc.

The great thing is, apparently, there's always gonna be something to bitch about...and any music writer knows better than to expect praise from anyone but his/her mother.

You're complaining, so that means you read it. Thanks for that.

who wants to listen to this new widespread DAT i have?

Fort Worth is not any farther than going to Hailey's, and there are few bands worth seeing over here. I'm just saying is all.

So what's different?

Observer this week -- basicaly all wire filler from other New Times chains/US Weekly. There is an interim editor there, and he's not even letting the local writers write much. It won't be any better for weeks as a newbie prances in from New Mexico with no clue about local music atall ...

8:00AM, every issue of Dallas Observer sucks ass. Porn. Vodka. Thats about it.

Anonymous says..3:40 PM

Paris was SO not hot in 1997

Anonymous says..3:00 PM

I'd just like to be the first to comment, and say this issue of the Dallas Observer sucks ass. You could literaly replace it, word for word, with a copy from 1997, and you couldn't tell the difference. Interview with a pop punk/metal band...a report about David Garza...and a piece on Xtina, Paris, Jessica and Beyonce.
Wow. Maybe it's just a joke.
