it list : saturday

1. Don Caballero | Fra Pandolf | Zombi (Rubber Gloves)

Fra Pandolf are a good live band but they'll have their work cut for them to hold their own tonight. They're playing with legendary and important Math Rock instrumentalists, Don Caballero. Don Caballero started as a group of guys who were basically aping Math Metal pioneers Breadwinner but they went on to form their own sound by expanding the rougher elements into really layered and nearly atmospheric instrumentals that sounded impossible to play by human beings. The frequent lineup changes were probably responsible for all the directions they went in and they are now back with no original members except the freakishly talented Damon Che. I have seen no modern drummer more impressive than Mr. Che when I've seen him play with Don Cab or Bellini, who I preferred him in. I would recommend this show as a required educational course for all local young and upcoming drummers. Anyways, now that Don Caballero is on Relapse Records their current album sounds like a summary of their entire career and they're blending their softer textured sounds and their more metal tendencies. I don't know much about Zombi but their songs sounded like Trans-Am's "Nightrider" period or Rush instrumentals. Take your pick.

2. Teenage Symphony | Hardin Sweaty and the Ready to Go | Swim Swim | New Science Projects (Club Dada)

Teenage Symphony are back tonight after taking a break from playing live. Hardin Sweaty and the Ready to Go I refuse to comment on because of their name but I'm sure they play pop music as does Swim Swim. New Science Projects we've mentioned before and they (he?) are probably the best bet in this lineup besides Teenage Symphony.

3. Deep Snapper | The Mad Scientists | The Distant Seconds

Deep Snapper includes former and current members of Birth to Burial but you wouldn't necessarily know that from their myspace page. Most of the tracks seem to be intense guitar driven rock but there is an off kilter feeling to the songs with treated vocals and manipulated instruments. I believe this is the band's first show and I think it will be a good one. The Mad Scientists are also playing and I think they'll be an appropriate match for Deep Snapper's debut. If you haven't seen them, they play this weird blend of psyche influenced rock with sharp funk rhythms and half shouted vocals. There is also some inexplicable guitar shredding to top it off but I've enjoyed them when I've seen or heard them. I prefer the originality of their music over a lot of Denton's "tasteful" retro country rockers, music theory students, jazz heads, and gear fetishists. Austin band The Distant Seconds finish out the lineup and they stand out for being a little more pop oriented but they sound pleasant enough.

4. Pegasus Now | Snowden | For Those Who Know (Amsterdam Bar)

Pegasus Now is playing at the Amsterdam bar and I'm sure they'll be playing stuff off of the ep that Stonedranger reviewed this week. See if they pull off their sonic diversity live. For Those Who Know play melodic rock with the detached whispered falsetto that accompanies bands who have a lot of British shoegaze influences. Touring act Snowden is from Georgia and they are very much along the same lines as For Those Who Know. They have notably released their debut album on Jade Tree Records.

Oh, guys, nobody step to check. We don't get him. His way of life and thought are too highly evolved for us to grasp. Quit making excuses.

No special credit was asked for or deserved. I was making a point of the fact that we funded the tour completely by ourselves and a large portion of our equipment is broken from the strain of all the gigs, heat, and transportation. We simply dont have the money to fix hardly any of it (which is the reason for the TD at the show). Go ahead, be an idiot and completely misunderstand what we are about and what we do. I am done with this.

denton cohesion isn't even worth mentioning really.

Go on tour without the support of a label? Welcome to real life, dude. You want some fucking special credt because you drove around and played thirty minutes of music every night? How innovative.

Chuck pandolf says..8:20 PM

Yeah it sucks not being in a real band. All of your equipment is broken because you took the effort to actually go on tour without the support of a label. We gave it our best shot, sorry it didnt meet your standards.

i was surprisingly impressed with the snowden/ftwk/pegasus now show at amsterdam bar saturday night. all three bands put on great live shows and the amsterdam bar might be my new favorite place in dallas to see shows. it's an outdoor venue in a nice spacious setting and they have people who bring your drinks to you! plus, john freeman was DJing and that's always entertaining.

I wish I could go to Chicago. I saw the Didjits 3 times back in the day. They were one of my faves back in the day. Scratch Acid definately my fave out of that whole lot and they played every song in their catalog so I am pretty content. Have fun in Chi-town MB.

By the way - Fra Pandolf should learn how to be a band or something.

I'll be seeing Scratch Acid in Chicago next week, along with Big Black, Negative Approach, and the Didjits. Holy shit!

The Scratch Acid show pretty much blew my mind. I don't think I will see anything this year that will top this show. Too bad they are only doing 3 reunion shows. I wish I could go to Chicago and Seattle.

NEW SCIENCE PROJECTS!!!!!!!
YES!!!!!!!

i was not talking about don cab for the record, I was talking about that For those who know band. I find it completely stupid to promote the fact that they recorded their album with some guy who has recorded other cool bands. Just because you have the money to record with someone good does not make the band good. I am see through??? I say you are fucking lame.

Deep Snapper was more like Birth to Burial than it was let on. But in a good way. Cody's right.

The Fold says..5:32 AM

The Mad Scientists folks are well aware of the love/hate line of the audience. I've had that conversation w/Brannon before. I think it takes some balls to realize that & hold the line & do what you want with your music. There are some trendier bands out there that could take a lesson from that.
Brannon is a shredding machine, BTW.

Also, Deep Snapper (to spite the terrible name) is my new favorite band. It's been a long time since I saw a band and immediately went to look for the CD after the set was over. 8 songs recorded in 3 hours the night before the first show and it's already in my CD player.

i love the mad scientist. They don't fit in any genre which makes them interesting to me. I saw them live at darkside with two other people in the audience and it was one of my favorite shows this year.

I've been to a couple meat puppet shows when i was much younger and they had that quality about them. just my two cents.

DL must be a dentonite to know MaD Scientists. They don't play out much.

"Anonymous said...
so they paid a bunch of money to get some guy to record their album???? just because someone got steve albini to record their album doesnt make them worth a damn.
5:14 PM"

You are see through. Thanks buddy. You got a lot to learn.

Anonymous says..2:39 AM

Mad Scientists are pretty bad, for lack of a better word, but they are truly original. When I see them, I can't take my eyes off of them. In a bad way, and a good way. Plus, they're really nice folks, but I know that doesn't go wfar with a lot of people on this website. You gotta see it at least once.

Current Leaves says..1:52 AM

Great! So, really, who are these other retro country rockers?

Defensive Listening says..1:47 AM

Okay. I was just comparing this anomaly band to the prevailing sound in a certain area. If a town had a lot of jam bands and I said I liked this one solo cellist more than the jam bands, is that an insane statement? It's not so much comparing as much as it is as saying, "I'm glad this band isn't part of that overcrowded club".

Current Leaves says..1:43 AM

I think they were saying "how can you dissect this band in this style and judge another band with a different style while comparing it to this other band."
i think. probably just trying to start shit though

Defensive Listening says..1:32 AM

What was the point? Illuminate me.

currentleaves says..1:30 AM

Well, I for one would like to know who these other "retro country rockers" are so I can promptly kick their fey asses out of the SCENE.
5:50 is kind of stupid but has a point just outside of their jibberish.

stonedranger says..1:22 AM

I wouldn't even bother responding to these idiots. 550 sounds like such an idiot that it is just funny. If anything, people like that give us MORE cred with the things they say. If our opinions are different from those held by people that write dumb shit like that, then we must be doing something right. Thanks!

Defensive Listening says..1:18 AM

I didn't build up Don Caballero that much either. If you read carefully I could only really endorse the drumming at this point. Half assed and underexplained? That's actually a compliment. Usually, I get criticized for writing too much. Please tell me what I don't know about or how I'm "misguiding" you? I'm sorry if you feel I might somehow get between you and your shitty taste.

Defensive Listening says..1:09 AM

What did I not explain? How did I marginalize my own taste? Is there not a lot of retro country rock in Denton? Did I make that up? You should learn to take some of things I say a little lighter. If I use the word tasteful it's probably a little sarcastic.

Anonymous says..12:56 AM

Jesus Christ, I wish you would stop writing. I'm serious. It's really bad. Stonedranger PLEASE come back. DL is not finished with 7th grade! He/she knows nothing about which he/she writes and it is misguiding. If I didn't know any better I would miss out on great bands and music by following his/her misleading opinions and half-assed, underexplained reviews. Please stop writing about things. And stuff.

Anonymous says..12:50 AM

You like the Mad Scientists over retro-country rockers, yet you pump up Don Caballero?
Your opinion just marginalized itself and your reviews are automatically null and void. As if your writing weren't elementary enough, you have to compare wannabe prog rock to tasteful songwriting.
You.
Are.
A.
Fucking.
Idiot.

it doesn't cost that much money.

Yeah, you have to get past the name. It's awful, but their shows are wild-ass fun.
