WE SHOT JR

it list : thursday

Have to be a bit quick today, so here goes:

1. Night Game Cult | Emil Rapstine of The Angelus | Jen of Shiny Around the Edges | Wild in the Streets (Rubber Gloves)
Not sure exactly what they will be doing tonight because I've never heard solo stuff from Jen, but based on their main musical projects, I'd say its a safe bet that this will be a pretty good show from Jen and Emil. You know we like Night Game and Wild in the Streets, so thats that.

2. Hip Hop Night (Slip Inn)
We've forgotten about posting this for a while now, but I am convinced that it is still easily the most fun you can have in Dallas on Thursday nights typically... and since there aren't any big shows going down in big d tonight, this could be the place for you... if you like JJ Fad and Public Enemy and Pharcyde and De La and Tribe and Big Daddy Kane and stuff like that. Because that is what they play, and it rules.

3. Daniel Folmer | The Fiction | Rifle Recoil (JJs Pizza Denton) This show is FREE, which means you are dumb if you live in Denton and don't at least stop by. I hadn't heard them until today, but from the sound of things, The Fiction's shimmering, hazy electro atmospherics could be right up your alley if you're one of those people who, like me, only likes music that you think other people will think you are cool for being into... nah, just kiddin' dude, psyche! It really is good, you should listen... not a lot of people doing what these guys are doing around here, which might make it worth checking out alone. You could probably call them Casioprog and get away with it. Yes! Rifle Recoil are kind of Radioheady, but unlike most bands you could say that about, they aren't annoying. In fact, they sound pretty good. Should be a good show if you're not looking to go crazy tonight.

4. Dj G is at Hailey's as usual.

5. The excellent Zoo will be showing their unusual collection of music and other videos upstairs at the Cavern tonight.

Bye.

One More Thing: Has anyone checked out some of the leaked tracks off the new Rapture album yet? Hmm, if the three tracks I've heard are any indication of what the rest of the album is like, the people that wanted to write them off are about to find out how wrong they were. I'll post some MP3s if anyone is interested.

color me embarassed. it was the single promo that's been on oink. but rest assured that it will pop up there before slsk. i apologize for the confusion.

the benefit of torrent sites are quality and scene releases. in other words, you'll get stuff way before the people that get stuff early. soulseek is also plagued by people who rip something at 128 bit and transcode it as something higher. Private sites usually have rules to protect quality. Plus the speeds are astonishing at times. We're not talking 80kb/s here. We're talking 500kb/s on a cable connection. Sometimes more. You literally download albums in mere moments. It took me 2 minutes to download a 148mb album earlier.

Also, because they are private sites, people are more likely to upload stuff earlier. Promos are typically watermarked these days. You can trace them. Withing the torrent community, there's a certain honor among thieves. Much more than napster-like P2P sharing. So it's safer in a way to upload albums.

Computer security is another issue. Soulseek isn't as bad as others. For that format they are clearly the best. Other sites like them are littered with spyware, viruses.

the true holy grail is nmp3. born from the something awful forums years ago. it went way underground. members aren't allowed to mention it on the net. there's a gestapo-like network of people that will rat you out and have you banned if you do. they give out invites once every blue moon. i know one person on it and he hasn't received an invite in two years. you will find very little info about it but they get their stuff even before Oink does. plus, it's huge!

also, what are some of the major advantages of torrent sites? I've never used one, but I hear people talk about them quite a bit. SLSK pretty much works ok for me though... I can get almost anything I want in a very short amount of time.

good tip Wanz, wish I had known about that before I spent like two years doing the weekender today.

which torrent sites. I usually use oink, but it is not on there yet.

man, it's called private torrent sites fellas. skip the soulseek nonsense. the rapture album has been on several torrent sites since the first few days of august.

i agree with mr positive. there are good things going on and there are good people doing good work for little or no money whatsoever.

Go see The Monks of Saturnalia tonight @ Allgood Cafe.

My mate greg is in town from Chicago to play bandleader with his amazing band. If you dig Mingus, Coltrane, or the more melodic side of Sun ra you would be crazy to mioss this. He played me the mmixes from his sessions he did with Matt pence a few months ago and I was completely blown away. Apparently he is gonna be flying back once a month to play with the MOnks or Unconscious Collective. I have a feeling these trips will be more sporadic once he gets snapped up by someone in Chicago. He is the best guitarist I know and an incredible composer/arranger. If you miss this you really are missing out.

It seems like Dallas is really turning itself around. And as much as you hate it, we have to thank WSJR, Sam, Spune, Fine Line, Callithump, Dada, Wanz, Double Wide, Good Records, lots of others (Except the usual curtain club suspects, who are doing these public LOOK AT ME meetings, instead of just getting to work)... Becasue those are the people you bitch about, and the only reason you get a chance to bitch is because they are doing SOMETHING. You may not like what they do, but some people do. All of those entities, along with a ton of decent bands, plus you talking about it and going to shows... Wait, I'm wrong. Everything sucks all the time everywhere.

for all of the shitting on Club Dada, there sure were a lot of people there last night, a weeknight. Wasn't a bad time at all.

I'm with Tystamp. I saw them play sometime around 00 or 01, and they seemed so vital. I guess I set my hopes for them too high. That "Get myself into it" tune is annoying stock disco. Not that I haven't been guilty of writing a stock disco tune...but damn that was a long time ago.

You can stream the one new thing from their my space "Get myself into it". Sounds pretty cool

I'm retarded. I didn't see Carlin's post.

This is where lots of anonymous people chime in with "yeah, andrea, you really ARE retarded" posts, probably with some kind of web evidence to support such.
