it list : monday

Of course, you can give open mic night @ the Fallout Lounge a shot... although I don't know if I can recommend it considering I've never been before. But it is hosted by Tim and Rhett from The Happy Bullets, and various members of various local bands reportedly collaborate with one another regularly at this thing, so if that sounds good to you, it probably will be.

And San Diego's Red Pony Clock will be playing a free show at J&Js tonight in Denton, starting at 8pm. If you ask me, most of this lovey cute boy indie pop crap has gotta go (although I'm afraid that like Rock n Roll, it might be here to stay), but Red Pony Clock probably comes as close as you possibly can to getting it right in that K Records, old school Sebadoh sort of way. Their lo-fi production and neutral, milky hotel horn section set them apart from most of the other bands that populate this genre, and they seem a bit more intelligent and musically competent than their peers. The band put out a couple of pretty decent internet only singles towards the end of 2005, and they seem like they might be able to build something from the promise that those songs provided. They'll be joined by Fishboy, Tha Bracelets, and Hardin Sweaty and the Ready to Go, some of whom might be too cute for their own good. We'll let you figure out which ones!

Metrognome is not moving road shows to Black Dog. We are holding all the shows we have booked through September at Metrognome, and are then going to take some time off from booking shows while we fix-up some things we've been putting off, and we may take a different approach to what we're utilizing the space for. It's still up in the air right now, but will be decided shortly.

yeah i see what you mean, anon 9:15.

personally, i was captivated by their live show and much prefer it to their recordings mainly because it's not completely organized and just flows very well without going on for too long.

their pop sound is something that hasn't really been attempted much in these parts much. it's not pop in its most joyous sense. its pop stabbed in the heart and fed out through a toy piano.

all i have to say is that i probably like them just as much as i do circulatory system... which is a lot.

jjs was good, I'd never heard any of the bands live, I don't really like fishboy, just not my thing but, probably the vocals, red pony clock were my favs.

Metrognome's considering moving road-shows to the blackdog, where there is a built-in draw.
Just not quite enough support to keep it going in its present location, I guess. Shame. Maybe it'll work out though.

off the subject, but has anyone heard anything about the metrognome collective no longer having live music shows?

Teenage Symphony are sincere in their live approach and I appreciate that. They are way less cute and quaint than just about every pop band from Dallas in the last several years.

teenage symphony is good for a yawn at this point.

they can write the music and the harmonies.... but they can't quite pull it off live w/o seeming boring and quaint.

when they play, you can hear crickets chirping somewhere off in the distance, i swear.

j&js was fun.

no its cool.

i completely agree that lots of pop friendly bands in the area don't know what the hell they're doing, but the few of them that actually do (teenage symphony, bracelets, etc.) are awesome and always worth checking out live if you're into any kind of straight up good fuckin pop music.

but yeah... it seems like a lot of people are trying to take after fishboy's success a little too much by being a little too twee-friendly.

or at least a serious one.

thanks for the kind words. Yes, I do wish that we could get some different discussions going some of the time. I'm planning on attmepting to interview every major mayoral candidate within the next year, so maybe that will spark something.

And Neil, like I said in my post, I can dig some of the cute stuff if its done right... its just that so much of it is done so terribly wrong, you know what I mean?

I don't really know enough about Bracelets to have any serious kind of opinion on them at this point, so its not meant to be an attack.

nope. not mugzu.

tha bracelets are really awesome, and as for being too cutesy-twee indie pop, i don't think that's hurting them at all.

when they played acoustic tonight at J&J's, i felt like i was watching some badass new K Records band or the new line up of The Gerbils.

seriously... very underrated!

mugzu?

Ditto the "damn fine job." I really like the non-music talk, too. But what does it say about us when an interview with a mayoral candidate gets 14 comments (most of them about his music choices) and a thread where someone jokingly calls Wanz a douchebag gets 100?

I think you guys do a damn fine job. I don't have a tv, so WSJR gives me my fix of comedy, drama, and just enough useful info to keep me coming back.
Well done.

red pony clock is touring as a 9 piece this time around. horns in full swing. fucking awesome live spectacle.

The Fallout Open Mic I attended last week was good and bad. There were about 3 performances that wasted a good 20 minutes of my life...otherwise, not too dang shabby.

Fishboy RULES!

Love,
Mom

Yes! Eat them!

stonedranger says..9:56 PM

hmm... well we try to keep things fresh by interviewing touring bands, writing general music features on shit we've never talked about before, posting MP3s that we like, interviewing local figures, and talking a bit about politics and other things that interest us. And that was all last week.

Other than that, we can't just make up these bad ass local bands that you've never heard of and tell you about them. Basically, we're doing as much as we can with what we have to work with in our own spare time with no compensation at all. So eat me.

It's getting to the point where I can just check this site once a week now, maybe every two. It's getting predictable, the same damn bands being patted on the back, the same boring anons thinking they're pretty damn clever. And of course I'm just trying to stir up the shit.

I'm hitting an an elderly woman right now! It's more satisfying because you can knock all of their teeth out at the same time!
