1. Attractive and Popular | Blonde Girls (8th Continent- Denton)
Due to scheduling issues and other concerns, tonight's show will be the last at the 8th Continent for several months, so if you wanted to get a chance to check the space out any time soon, tonight would be a good night to do it... as in the only night to do it. But even if the place wasn't temporarily closing up shop, this would be a good night to go anyway, as I can't think of many bands that would be more fun to see at the 8th than the two that are playing tonight. In case you haven't heard, Ft. Worth's Blonde Girls are an excellent live band, with hyper start/stop rhythms and machine gun noise guitar assaults that certainly will command the attention of even the snobbiest of WSJR readers. Fans of the ridiculously good Lightning Bolt, Blood Brothers, and our own Eat Avery's Bones will surely dig it. Attractive and Popular's infectious and completely danceable no wave is also well worth the drive to see live, with synths and even a slight prog influence separating them from the vast majority of bands that could be described by using the words "punk" and "dance" in the same sentence. Check out "Sononon" on their myspace page. Should be a great show at a venue that we can only hope will keep going.

2. Fallout Lounge Open Mic Night (with Rhett and Tim from Happy Bullets)
We haven't had a chance to see the new open mic night over at Fallout, but I'd be willing to bet everything I own that its at least better than the old fallout open mics, with completely laughable singer songwriters and joke bands that were about as funny as a Dick Cheney press conference dominating the stage... so we can say that this version will be a bit better than that, at least. I don't know if Rhett and Tim actually have control over who plays there, but they have been looking for good acts to come experiment and have some fun, and considering that those guys seem to have pretty good taste, they might be able to make it a good night. I'm willing to go down and give it a shot.

Open Mic night was a blast! I'll be back for more. Before heading to Fallout, I went to the "Save the Scene" meeting at Darkside. They've started a message board here.

Brian Epstein's an idiot. Chants? Hymns? Gospel? Christian Contemporary? Stryper?

And yes, I know who Mr. Epstein was.

i think, if you go back aways, that you would've seen a post that read: politics and music are like religion and music, they don't mix.

well I'm glad someone has tried to figure out what the hell some of these strange cryptic posts actually mean.

My skills in cryptology astound me. So, the Post of the Day up there led me to search out WTF he/she was talking about. I found:

'When will any of the "stalwarts" or "puppet masters" of the Dallas music scene every live up to any "potential" they might "have?"

'That question's really aimed at Robert Jenkins, if he's lurking about. Everything's all talk with that guy. Such a smart guy, too, but, man, nothing ever happens. Nothing. It's kind of a sad, dark, drunken joke, it is.

'If "Robert's dad was right," wouldn't he have lived up to the potential he so clearly has?

'Move beyond the Barley. It's a holding pattern.

'Carter could learn a thing or two about that as well.'

So, here's your secret decoder ring:

'Robert Jenkins' is the managing owner of Summer Break Records, home to Sorta, I Love Math, The Cut*Off, Chris Holt, Here In Arms, plus some defunct bands and maybe Pleasant Grove. He also paid for a large portion of The Strange Boys' latest, but does not have them on exclusive contract.

'Barley' is the Barley House, Robert's very favorite hangout. I think it's more tradition than anything else, though he knows the owners and is treated well. The Barley House is also home to late night appearances by many of the musicians he works with, and is friends with.

'Stalwarts', 'puppet masters', 'potential' and the like is nonsense.

Robert is a bit of a talker - he's a defense attorney fer crissakes - and has sometimes demonstrated a reluctance to follow through. Still, he manages to pull quite a few things together, which probably very few other than Zak can speak to on this blog.

'Robert's dad was right' is quote from an Old 97s song which references Robert and, obviously, his dad. The context of the quote proves the poster an idiot, as Robert's dad was rambling about Armageddon and Y2K at the time. Certainly nothing about Robert's potential.

'Carter' is Carter Albrecht, local musician. He's played with Sparrows, Sorta, Salim Nourallah, Burden Brothers, Edie Brickell and Charlie Sexton - and probably scores of other local bands as a session player. By all rights, he should be much more successful than he is - and I believe that is what the poster is referring to - but I can't argue the meaning of success with anyone who's been invited to dinner by Paul Simon like Carter has.

'""' are quotation marks, and have two clear uses, 1.) actual quotation of another text or conversation, and 2.) an indicator of sardonic intent, (i.e., to add an implied 'the so-called' before the quote). Apostrophes are often used as quotation marks when the quote contains a quote, to increase the ease of reading. Regardless of their use or form, quotation marks should always be used carefully and sparingly.

And there you go.

I wanted to give a little heads up about the Porch tonight. It's a free party at Dan's with fiction readers, poets, and music, every other Tuesday...

Well, tonight, Spitfire Tumbleweeds are going to play. That's me and cory from Record Hop, Adub from Current Leaves, JC from Burnt Sienna Trio, Alex from Super Love attack, and local beard legend Kody Jackson. It's good earnest country music, sometimes a little rocking. If that sounds alright, come on out at 8:00

i'm curious about the same thing SR.

where's that dude who was talking about "Barley" and calling people no one on here knows by there first name? i think i was beginning to understand where he was coming from.

it's like, this town won't get anywhere w/o charlie, but charlie doesn't want to help out. all charlie cares about is the Pad (and don't pretend like you don't all know). i mean, when it comes down to it all, charlie has made this town a dead town
