it list : saturday

things to do:

1. Sean Kirkpatrick | Chris Flemmons | John Wesley Coleman | Dj Nature and No2Self (Rubber Gloves)
This is a birthday party for Geminis I suppose, and there are two things you should know right off the bat: 1) Its free for everyone; 2) and there is free beer for people that can prove via id that they are in fact Geminis. Too bad for me. But even still, it should be a really fun show. Paper Chase's Sean Kirkpatrick goes on at 930 on the dot with some cool piano based numbers that don't sound a bit like the Paper Chase in parts but are much more melodic on the whole. Baptist General's Chris Flemmons will do some solo stuff right after, followed by a performance from Austin's John Wesley Coleman. We've only heard the one song on his myspace page, but it is that one song that is forcing us to consider driving up to denton tonight. Really cool wall of noise with sort of a Thurston Moore meets outsider vocal delivery that has us pretty intrigued. Would like to hear what the rest of it sounds like, and its free, so what do we (or you) have to lose? And of course, after coleman, Nature and NO2self will be kicking everyones ass with a great dj set until closing. Check out NO2self's stuff on the myspace if you haven't already.

You are the Universe at 1919 Hemphill IS CANCELLED TONIGHT.... so nevermind.

2. And Chris Garver will be in the early opening slot at the Cavern tonight with Brooklyn's Megan Reilly (snooze), Backsliders, and Naptime Shake (Noah Bailey of the Observer).

Thats all we knows about.

naptime shake was great -- i was jealous of his purdy chord changes and he boasted clearly visible and interesting vocals

megan reilly was also great -- her voice goes from subtle to shattering with intimidating effect

(incoming rant)

however (and this is my problem with about 1000% of bands these days) i could hardly understand a single word she said -- all i could hear were vowels -- luckily, her singing was so good that i was still getting spine shivers at certain parts (and to boot, on the studio recording she is crystal clear)

it seems like bands these days are all very good arrangers and/or have incredible drummers (which is good and entertaining if youre drunk)

but for me, personally, (and these are opinions, Opie) its completely distracting trying to understand a tongue-in-cheek (literally) singer

and you dont have be a troubador! im about 5 years late, but ive become obsessed with 'the texas jerusalem crossroads' -- a perfect (although extreme) example of both worlds effortlessly melting into one another

if your band is fucking aces, youre only gonna elevate yourselves with some vivid, foamless, picture book lines and verses

but, really, enunciating a few consonants now and then would help too

thats all, i dont know anything

i wish i knew... didn't have the money to park, get tickets, buy drinks in deep elum.

....and am i the only one who really doesn't think max cady is good at all?? strange boys should have played after them so i wouldn't have had to get their as early and wait through their stupid cock-rock set to see the riverboat gamblers.

I went to The Theater Fire instore at End of an Ear in Austin. It was great with a good turnout of 30-40 folks. Then onto Snake Eyes Vinyl for Unconscious Collective. I ended up missing them as they didn't go on 'til around 8pm & I had dinner plans. Then Riverboat Gamblers/The Arm/Marked Men at Emo's. I was up front during RG's set and am justly sweaty & covered with beer that was thrown toward/at the stage. It's invigorating nights like this that renew my hope in music, actually feeling something. The Arm has admittedly seen better nights & hope one of them is 7/22 when they play Darkside Lounge. Overall great lineup/show. The crowd's enthusiasm is infectious. There are a few nights like that in Dallas, but few & far between. How was the RG/Strange Boys/Max Cady show?

I just got an email from the sound guy at the Cavern -- I will likely be playing at 9:30 instead of 9 -- its a tad bit later in the evening for all yall alcoholic night owls

cant wait to hear megan reilly play solo (tho the band sounds great on her myspace page)
