it list : thursday

1. Black Angels | Transient Theory | Bo Jones (Darkside Lounge)
Black Angels are of course a WSJR favorite. However, some people complain that a lot of their songs sound alike. We sort of agree in a sense, even though we really like the songs, or the song so to speak. Anyway, a lot of the newer material we have heard from them sounds a lot different than the stuff on their self titled EP, and it seems that they are branching out with strange, interesting rhythms and moves towards more traditional pyschedelic on some tracks, while moving away from it all together on others. Go see what you think of the new stuff if you have doubts. Transient Theory. Never heard them before today. They are positively awful. Go to their Myspace page if you enjoy pretending to be on the set of a commercial for teenage girl deodorant. Houston's Bo Jones is a little better, but not much. Go late.

2. Z00 (Upstairs at the Cavern)
Thank god there is something to do in Dallas on Thursday nights again. Zoo has been attracting larger crowds almost every week with its nice mix of dance videos, rock videos and strange videos. Really, you hear great music, see strange images, and might just run into someone as cool as you. Imagine that. Anyway, check it out this week and see what everyone is talking about. As a side note, the Zoo folks plan on showing some local band footage every week (starting some time in the near future), spotlighting one local group each week. We'll give you more details when we get them, but our understanding is that they will take music videos, live footage, and just about anything else to showcase good music going on in the area (even though pickins be slim these days.) We'll give you the contact info as soon as we have it.

3. Of course, DJ G will keep the party goin' at Hailey's with the best 80's dance you never heard.

jeez, what is "cred" anyways these days? I'd guess that if there IS a formula, it only exists because of people like you - actually keeping up with that shit instead of just listening to the music. seems kind of stupid and has nothing to do with the actual music, more like a popularity contest or something.

either go check them out or shut up. I haven't seen them yet either, why not just go see first-hand? or would that burst your elite bubble...

...the point of the post above yours exactly.

cred cred cred.

NO ONE ON THIS BLOG HAS IT!

LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY.

oh and the formula (which i forgot to complete) is this:

local cred
+indie cred
+worldwide appeal-cred

"Highly recommended to anyone in search of a concert full of hot chicks."

...sortof like Black Tie Dynasty?

or that really cool deathray davies song that you like so much?

it sounds like a MIXTURE of bedhead and yo la tengo??? that's like saying "this ingredient reminds me of Syrup with sugar in it"... then you add the smiths (an obvious, catch-all "ingredient")

i also like the fact that you went "local indie band" (local cred), "popular american indie band", "obvious europian influence band"

so formulaic it hurts

Truly the work of a lazy writer to use comparisons to other artists.

That's because they have a shitty boring name. It never helped Trackstar (SF) either, and they were good for awhile.

8 people attended the Crushed Stars show. Shame. The stuff was really gorgeous, Yo La Tengo + Bedhead + a dash of Smiths (and I don't like the Smiths much, but I like the way this was handled)...sound was a little off but still good. Hope to see them at a more proper venue soon. Highly recommended to anyone in search of a concert full of hot chicks.

Just a note to confirm that indeed, the women in Cody's band are hot. But, I don't think they are single. Well, I know one isn't!

Crushed Stars is one of my favorite band names. I look forward to seeing him at some point.

Zoo was great. Thanks for that recommend. Seeing The Cure, Prince and Motorhead back to back and spearheaded by the cartoon Fantasia made me have faith in Thursday nights again.

Carlin says..7:55 AM

Sam or anyone, How did the Crushed Stars' show turn out? I was headed there, but got sidetracked...

Carlin says..7:54 AM

Transient Theory was a no-show at the Black Angels show tonight. I asked why & someone mentioned a "bad review" they had. Seriously? No idea, but funny nonetheless. Angels put on a good show regardless. Can't wait 'til tomorrow when they play amongst friends...

stonedranger says..5:21 AM

they sound like the buzzcocks. Not bad.

ok, i have no way of listening, but i feel like i've discussed the Marked Men w/ a few of my friends... i forget what their sound was described as.... anyone anyone????

if you play w/ the strange boys then i'll give you a shot... but i think i heard some good shit about them.... just wanna know specifics (and i have dial up, so don't tell me to go to their myspace page and "give em a listen"... b/c i can't, and if i could, it'd take days)

Anonymous says..1:21 AM

degree? sam? good gosh you've been thoroughly deceived.

Anonymous says..12:59 AM

for real, weshotjr will love The Marked Men once they hear them. Hands down one of the best bands from Denton. No question about it. New disc on Swami Records drops tonight!

Prayer for Animals actually sounds pretty good. And I don't even like indie rock these days.

The Fold says..10:14 PM

I wouldn't be able to do that.
I hate ALL bands.

Carlin says..10:12 PM

Yep, I'm promoting it, but I also like the bands. I tend to throw shows of bands I like/support, rather than just trying to make a quick buck.

The Fold says..10:09 PM

I dunno, I'm a music "journalist" w/the quotation marks. Sam's more of a journalist. (w/out them)
He's probably got some sort of degree or somethin.
But being one w/the quotation marks, I've seen no offers of tail. Not that it matters. I'm married to a hot chick in a band.

Anonymous says..10:05 PM

we already know about that show

johnh says..10:03 PM

isn't that what music "journalists" do? chase "girl in band" tail? give them plugs and reviews and hope against hope that they can get some?

The Fold says..10:02 PM

Could that be because you're promoting it?
I think that goes a few threads back.

Anonymous says..9:57 PM

the hot girls have to be single and not aware that sam is a dillweed yet, then and only then can you get your writeup

Anonymous says..9:56 PM

no, we're thinking about hot girls in bands now thank you very much

The Fold says..9:56 PM

I dunno, my band has 2 hot girls in it & we've never been in the observer. But I think the extent of my relationship w/Sam was maybe a fart joke or two in a dRc thread about playing Halo 2. So, you know, all bidness.

Sam M. says..9:52 PM

You might be thinking about Smile Smile? Dunno about any particular "hot girl." But I'm talking about the all-guy band at myspace.com/crushedstarsmusic

Anonymous says..9:46 PM

hot girls in your band can get you a record contract....

and then the lable gets the girl, and the rest of the band is out of a contract and out a hot girl.

Anonymous says..9:46 PM

and written about CONSTANTLY in the Observer!

Cody says..9:39 PM

What, hot girls in your band can get you booked?

Anonymous says..9:28 PM

knowing sams criteria for bands to plug-probably

stonedranger says..9:06 PM

are Crushed stars the one with the hot girl?

Sam M. says..9:03 PM

Crushed Stars CD release show at Good Records, ~8 p.m.

djtigerbee says..8:59 PM
