Or at least some of us looked like we did at the Observer awards tonight. Fucking sweet. I wonder if the WSJR team made Belafonte cry? |

i don't get it
glen reynolds played open mic at bend last night, he was playing some of the tunes he is currently recording i told him about my party idea, and it was shot down with swiftness and a smile
oh well it was just a thought, and i do love recordhop, scott and ashley have always been very kind to me, and i love their work. if i could help them more on a national/international level, i would and i do try to do just that when i can. |

"supports all sorts of all bands."
"Not that its Cindy's fault, but people that support local music just to support it are what cause Dallas to suck so royally 99% of the time. The idea that people should support local music just because its local is laughable."
i totally agree--its really brainless to think ALL local bands are good. as soon as someone says something like that i no longer trust their judgement. |

i think texas gigs would be better if you could post on there without having an account. no one talks about anything except for Cindy and Sam. Its kind of useless in that sense, but its good for finding out about shows i guess. |

i may not utilize texasgigs all the time, but if you pay attn you see that cindy covers everything - crap and 'the rock elite' (to some of you anyways) i love this site and some of the others, but i know that if i want to hear a great show i cant attend, as just one example, i can turn it up on my computer at texas gigs. i appreciate having all the options in web, you know |

Each member of this blog should host a house party with at least 3 bands. a weekly houseparty series, some in apartments w/ acoustics - and some in garages with the cops getting called out by the neighbors.
or someone w/ some money should start a diy. i got 5 on it. |

perhaps it is true that some of the people she supports "suck royally" but essentially people get the jist that it is her opinion as a reviewer and they can choose to see or not see a band depending on how they feel about her tastes.
you make it sound like all she has to do is promote a shitty band and droves of people will attend a show
believe me, they don't, unless they know the band beforehand, or unless that band has done their job of promoting themselves
i guess i think people are smart enough to be discerning on their own, and believe that they don't have to be spoonfed taste.
as far as supporting local music just because it is local is not something that i do, i happen to like all the bands i support, be it to talk about them to other people or to actually shell out money for cover.
perhaps you can help me figure this one out, how can people support bands and not go broke in this town :) there has to be another way to see and support live music without the pricey covers and beer tabs...
are there any diy places in dallas that you know of that i can start promoting? |

Okay. First of all I will concede a couple of things to StonedRanger...
"deserving an observer award" - when i read your response. i realized i had no idea what that meant either. awards for stuff like that are weird and kinda' creepy to me. that's not to say i didn't have a great time, just that i didn't pay much attention to who won what.
"make dallas more fun for me"- nothing wrong with that at all. that's part of why this web site is fun.
i think of texas gigs as more of a directory than anything, and i don't spend much time there . it does, however, amaze me that they can keep up with all that they do.
And now, to anonymo i say - i don't "gotta" do nuthin. I mean, you know me. Bub. The zombie. i'm no less anonymous than you i guess, but it's like being in a room with 10 people with the same name. Actually, it's not like that, it literally IS that. it's confuserating. it's all fun and games, though.
sorry i'm ranty. i'll shut up now. |

No, no blog wars here. We did that before and I'm not about to get into it again.... I'm too tired.
And I'm sure Cindy does work hard, and everyone I've ever interacted with over at Texas Gigs, with the exception of her husband, has been nice and reasonable, so I have no problem with them as people or anything like that.
And I don't really know what the criteria is for "deserving" to win an Observer award, so I can't really comment on that. Congrats to them for winning though, I'm sure they are very excited about it. They do have a lot of content and obviously are very good at marketing.
And I really wasn't even responding, in my last post at least, to anything about Texas Gigs. I was responding to the idea that people should just support local music, bra. Nothing annoys me more than that.
I started this blog to make Dallas more fun for ME. Plain and simple. And YES, I am saying that Dallas music sucks, at least partially, because people are too nice and "open minded" about it. And don't get into one of these "objective v. Subjective" hang ups. I know my opinions on my music, like anyone else's, are subjective in nature. I'm just smarter than everyone else, except Chris.
We never expected to win the award, and kind of like being the underdog anyway. If anyone wants to get into a debate about the suckiness of Dallas music and its causes, that is another one of the points of this blog, so go right ahead. I'm not going to discuss the award anymore however, because its boring and its really not that relevant to what were are trying to do here. Congrats to Texas Gigs, and thats all I gotta say bout that. |

you're right, bub. what do i know? no doubt my opinions are in the overall minority of music fans, so what right do i have to say what's good or not.
but you gotta stop the whole anonymous hatin' thing. that's what makes this blog so intriguing.
and to answer your question about who gets to decide what bands.... cindy does.. |
| | |
| Bub says.. |
| | |
Once again, who gets to decide what bands are good enough to be promoted on her free internet site. You?
It's called "TexasGigs.com" for jeepersake! It's not called TexasGigsThatsomeanonymouspersonthinksyoushouldgosee. com . You could just as easily blame guitar center for music that YOU deem to be unworthy of your coolness. Maybe they should have an audition phase before they'll sell you a multitracker or a guitar. |

blog wars are cool. i totally should've won, f all you guys.
honestly, in terms of sheer content, cindy probably deserved it. plus we're talking the general voting public here, and as you've all pointed out numerous times, the general voting public are morons. |

so, stonedranger, if you're saying that texasgigs basically doesn't do much to improve the overall quality of music in this town, i would have to agree with you.
i know she's well-intended with her blog endeavor, but really, she should stop promoting some of the bands she's promoting on there. i've seen some horrible, horrible bands trumped up on TG...
that type of attention can be deceiving if you're a shitty band. |
| | |
| Bub says.. |
| | |
Texas Gigs looks at local music with an open mind, but y'know not everyone has the cajones to be an elitist. Are you seriously suggesting that music sucks in Dallas because Texas Gigs and others like it are promoting openly without telling people what they should and should not listen to? Naw, probably a misunderstanding. There will always be music that you think is shitty. There will always be music you think is brilliant. Both are valid, and deserve to exist. I love the pointed opinions and scathing remarks that come up on WSJR, but It seems to be more for musicians and (gag) "scenesters" than the average showgoer. I find WSJR much more entertaining and valuable, but shit, Cindy must work pretty hard to keep up w/ all that shit. I think she deserves the award. WSJR should stay as far away from popular noteriety as possible. |

I went to Good Records last night, and it was pretty funny to me how many people went up to the counter to get free tickets to the DOMA's and they all asked, "Who's playing here?" When they all found out it was Grandaddy they either responded with, "Really?" or "Who?" It let me know that the Dallas Observer really does have its finger on the pulse of the music scene. ;) |

yes, in fact, texas gigs did win. don't worry though, you guys are doing some really good things here.
you can't expect to win something like the DOMA's. it's voter based and texas gigs agenda is to reach a much broader crowd, which is what simultaneously makes them not as intereting, at least to me.
