UPDATE: End of School afterparty at the Brown House, 808 Welch St. in Denton, near the corner of Welch and Eagle.

1. It looks like Spune's End of School Show up at Hailey's in Denton is going to be great local music showcase, and its free for those of you who are over 21. The Line up:

Faux Fox 1am

The Undoing of David Wright 12am

Pilotdrift11pm

Peter Schmidt and His Gentlemen Scholars 10pm

Robert Gomez and His Band of Musicians 9pm

Record Hop 8pm

Tame.. Tame and Quiet 7pm

We don't know what Peter Schmidt and Robert Gomez do, but the other bands range from pretty good (Faux Fox) to great (Undoing). Should be a good way to see a couple of these bands for chizeap.

2. Fishboy and Teenage Symphony are doing early shows at Club Dada (probably around 7 pm)

3. Mogwai is in the Tea Room ballroom and

4. John Vanderslice is in the Tea Room Tea Room.

We weren't trying to get banned from Hailey's. In fact, Hailey's has a history of treating us pretty damn fairly.

The shit-talk was Shane just mouthing off out of whim. On stage we get confused about who and what we like and sometimes even where and who we are.

This was the first time we've played Hailey's in a long time, probably due to Spune Productions. But Lance seems to like us, now -- he invited us to play that show, and he's offered us another date in August (but we'll be touring.)

No bad blood exists outside the diegesis of our on stage personas' mania.

And, no... we're not a gimmick band, and yes, I like it better when it's a cramped room of moving bodies instead of having to incite reaction too. (Which is exactly what was happening.)

We get bored. If there isn't positive energy flowing, we have to introduce some negative. We want each show to stand out in every witness's memory for some reason.

Last time in Phoenix, I insulted some guy's t-shirt and told him to die. I found out afterwards he was mentally retarded and felt bad. Luckily we left Phoenix the next morning.

and boy howdy, Pilotdrift DOES suck!!!

i figured they'd have to push the envelope a bit more to get banned

...i'm hoping that a place like hailey's has seen some incendiary bands in it's day, dispite now being partially controlled by the safer-than-though spune productions.

if you can't say "Pilotdrift sucks" and "fuck you for only giving us $75" then what can you say, really?

Yes... all should see The Night Game. We've known Kyle a while now and his songs and shows are great. Sadly, scheduling always seems to mess-up our chances to play together. Don't miss him if'n you have the chance. Make sure to introduce yourself to him as not only is he a great songwriter, but a nice guy to hang out with as well.

Lars and I have been working on the next issue of NCA for some time...scheduling, the pangs of modern logistical obstacles, etc. have all contributed to the long delay. However, anyone interested in the Undoing should be delighted. It should be available within a few weeks, hopefully sooner. On the subject of their show at Haileys on the 18th- they are playing with The Night Game Cult. The Night Game Cult is an excellent project. Kyle the avatar of the Night Game is a musical gift. His vision is seething with the more unique elements of early 21st century art.

they did not get banned.

they're playing next week on may 18th. first hand.

maybe they got banned by Spune or some shit.... how terrible. They'll never get approached to fill an opening slot for Black Tie Dynasty, Deathray Davies, or some other shitty band that they consistantly book

...but somehow i think HAILEY'S knows better than to ban them completely

Well put AM. When's the new issue out?
Anyways, the point of my post (unstated) is that the Faint and Prima Donnas did it much better and with about 6 times as much conviction. Maybe they're all novelties, but Faux Fox look aqnd sound like VERY bad actors up there. It's painful to watch. The other two, well, pretty much top-notch actors.

It is true that everything seems to have been done before and because of this truth discussions like this are inevitable. This seemingly obvious truth can cause even the most educated and adventurous music listener, as many who post on We Shot JR, seem to be, to be skeptical of all contemporary music. Indeed, the former glories of past musical movements have become absolute in many minds of contemporary musical aficionados as times that represented the penultimate of art. The artist today is from inception at an unfair advantage of their eventual perception. They will always be compared to a romanticized time in the past. Every aspect of a musical group becomes analyzed and usually eventually criticized. On one level it is a symptom of information overload, of the plague of apathy and elitism that is so obtuse this decade and of course out of senseless competition. Today the music listener has an infinite amount of choice. From this choice will ultimately come discernment of taste. So then it is within this (to quote Jason Lithium from You are the Universe) "Cultural Blender" that I must offer an opinion on behalf of the critiscm posted by the anonymous directed towards the Undoing of David Wright. I honestly believe that they as a musical group do not offer "shtick." They are completely dedicated to their form of art and expression. As a fan my opinion may be bias. As neighbors they are sound citizens. As friends they are credible and capital fellows. It is true- they are dedicated to creating something grand! I believe they have already succeeded. With that said my fellow posters and to stonedranger thank you for your time.

It's my understanding that Undoing of DW got banned from Hailey's that night. That's second-hand info, though.

...And Satisfact before both of them.

thats true, the Prima Donnas were the best of that little scene.

Anonymous says..1:34 AM

I just meant that they weren't as much of a current jump-on-the-bandwagon type band as some of these others that have been named. Sure, the Faint did it first. But there weren't any bands around here doing that at the time. And we do live in a sad time if we're arguing over how this shitty band (the faint) or that shitty band (the primadonnas) started being cartoonish new wave before anyone else did. You probably own a Faint or a Primadonnas record. Good for you.

Faux Fox has sucked ass since 2000, maybe even longer. Sorry, the Faint started doing it before that, and the Prima Donnas even before that.

i think that, in their own setting (or a more sensible one) they are fabulous... and i like their style anyway.

...it just makes a lot more sense when people wanna dance and have fun. Then they don't feel the desire to incite audience reaction.

well i'm gonna say it..i think david wright guys are almost as lame as btd and ff..
if they lost some of the schtick they would be great
no bs for the [[ to the nono

who saw the undoing w/ me last night?

...priceless banter

Anonymous says..4:59 PM

interesting sound they have though... i just wish i could shake the impression that they are just the BTD guys trying a(nother) new angle.

yeah, feaux fox take tight pants and tank tops to a whole new level of uncool cliche'

i know the singer is not from london..so why???he really bugs me

Faux Fox is a travesty. You think the Black Tie Dynasty is bad?

The Mogwai show was pretty sweet, although I did want to hear a few they didn't play.

Robert Gomez, recently signed to Bella Union, plays dark and moody songs that are beautiful and well-written. Vibrophone, violin, accordian... A strange cousin to Blonde Redhead...

yeah, I think the wsjr crew gonna be in full effect at that one tonight.
