it list : sunday

1. T.V. On the Radio | Celebration (Gypsy Tea Room)
Heard the new TV on the Radio today, and I really like what I hear so far... very experimental, and the songs sound a bit more alive than the ones on their first full length, which I thought fell a little flat after the brilliant Young Liars EP. It will be interesting to hear what they sound like live, but their new stuff sounds good enough to make me take the gamble. Celebration (whose lead singer does vocal duties on some TV on the Radio songs) opens, and they're pretty good too. Some very spastic kind of no wave rhythm heavy songs mixed in with some quiet weird ones. Go early and check them out.

2. Books on Tape | Captain Ahab | Malise (Metrognome Collective-Fort Worth)
Two strange bands from LA tonight: Books on Tape play rough, choppy, sorta minimal experimental electronica that leans toward the dance. Good stuff. Captain Ahab are a train wreck, and although I'm not usually into "Joke bands," this joke is made easier to swallow because their tunes are entertaining and sort of like, funny and stuff. And I'm not even sure it is a joke. Dallas' Malise, who I have never heard until today, play some strange noise that actually has a beat behind it. I'm not sure if you can dance to it, but this will probably be a really fun show. And its at a really cool not-for-profit DIY venue, so get off your ass, drive to Fort Worth and make something happen.

Also tonight at 10 on 88.1 KNTU, Frank of Frequency Down will give you this:

NEW Sonic Youth, Islands, Sufjan Stevens, Land of Talk, Rainer Maria, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Spector 45 and Midlake! Also songs from Wilco, The Helio Sequence, Crystal Skulls, Eniac, The Tah-Dahs, Prayer For Animals, Teenage Symphony, American Analog Set, Experimental Aircraft, Moonbabies, Drive By Truckers, Drop Nineteens, Single Frame, Thee More Shallows AND SO MUCH MORE!!!

wanz, if i could i would make it out on friday, but i have a thing at the metrognome. maybe if it wraps up early enough, i will.

we are happy to book electronic shows... I love it, the only problem we have had has been turn out. i think the laptop deathmatch is an awesome way to work it, if you want to try a fort worth deathmatch, bring it on. otherwise, tell your deathmatch guys to drop us an email or a myspace message and we will try to book a show.

to mr. anon about the live glitch electronic thing....There is a Kid 606 show on friday and you should definately come check out the laptop deathmatch. there are almost 30 different electronic musicians in the organization and they are all dying to play more shows outside of the deathmatch. Most of these guys(self included)have a lot of "hardware" outside ofvthere laptops. It is a great support group. One of our guys shelled out the duckets just to fly Kid 606 in. Unity folks. The more we unite the easier things are. It's not my world. I am just a pawn of the big picture.
Sounds like the show was really good. If Celebration was not in town I probably would have made the trek.

Seeing Celebration perform on the back of a flatbed (Ms. Bea's-East Austin) during SXSW was killer. A beautiful dusky sky, the ever present beer buzz and amazing show helped make it one of the highlights.

celebration was the fucking shit, one of the best live bands i've seen in a long ass time, and tv on the radio exceeded my expectations alot and ruled too. i think they're far from boring. seeing them live puts the music in a way better perspective. kaduhh!!!

TV on the Radio is the most overrated band in the whole wide fake-experimental, boring indie rock (with singers that sound like peter gabriel) world

.... but you already knew that

I think earlier times would help a lot. Starting at 10 is pretty late.

probably.

well, for one thing, malise made our speakers glow. acually glow. and they started to smell funny.

is that a good thing?

for another, there arent enough awesome hardware based glitchy electronica shows in DFW, wanz's world excluded. Books on tape was great. glitchy. electronic. hardware based. of course then Captain Ahab stripped down to their jockey shorts and rubbed their sweaty bodies on the five people in the audience. they probably spent a total of 5 minutes on the stage, changing songs, and the rest of the time was spent cavorting in the "audience" singing, dancing, and sweating.

seriously there was more energy at that show, with zip for a crowd than at all of the cool indy rock shows we've had combined.

a great, memorable, fun night, with almost noone in the audience.

i hope the same thing doesnt happen tonight with half-handed cloud.

would people prefer 8pm shows on weeknights? would it help the turnout? anyone?

Celebration fucking rules. TV on the Radio was okay for the first half of the set and as soon as I was about to split they kicked it up a notch, but Celebration was absolutely breathtaking. Very passionate. Very inspiring. They are coming back in the fall.

If you miss Celebration you are seriously fucking up. They made my favorite album of 2005 by a longshot. I am near fanatic over this band.
