last week's good records chart

1. Built To Spill - You In Reverse
2. The Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics
3. The Black Angels - Passover
4. Band of Horses - Everything All the Time
5. Calexico - Garden Ruin
6. Editors - The Back Room
7. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Show Your Bones
8. Serena-Maneesh - Serena-Maneesh
9. Philip E Karnats - Pleasesuite
10. Great Lake Swimmers - Bodies and Minds
11. Islands - Return To The Sea
12. Irving - Death in the Garden, Blood on the Flowers
13. Figurines - Skeleton
14. Eagles of Death Metal - Death By Sexy...
15. The Appleseed Cast - Peregrine
16. The Sounds - Dying to Say This To You
17. Brian Eno & David Byrne - My Life in the Bush of Ghosts
18. Centro-Matic - Fort Recovery
19. Mono - You Are There
20. Two Gallants - What the Toll Tells

Who knew that there were enough cool people in Dallas to chart My Life in the Bush....? Did people start taking AntiDaryl pills or something?

And the Band of Horses album. I've only listened to it twice, but I'm gonna have to say... overrated.

Well there are two types of Eno records of course ... for the song/pop records, I'll take Another Green World by a mile. I hear you though, the B-side of Before and After Science is amazing. The A side is way too perky, kinda how I feel about Taking Tiger Mountain and a lot of Here Come the Warm Jets ... I do really like that stuff, but only occasionally.

Now as for the ambient stuff, that's a whole nother realm ... Music for Airports is the most famous, and while it is very good it is certainly not the best. I am a huge fan of the album he made w/ ambient pianist Harold Budd, Ambient2: The Plateau of Mirror ... and also of the very minimalist Discreet Music, one of his earliest ambient efforts ... and also Music for Film (eerie shorter pieces) and Ambient 4: On Land.

And the reason I like Another Green World is the pure and genius synthesis of the dual sides of Eno (song and ambient) .... the lush ambient balladry of B-side of Before and After Science to a lesser degree ...

yeah here come the warm jets is really good too... second favorite for me. i think taking tiger mountain stuck with me because i remember the first time i heard mother whale eyeless i was completely blown away.

anyone want to start an eno tribute band?

Anonymous says..5:40 PM

yeah.... my two favorite are "taking tiger mountain..." and "life before and after science" (although there is one side of that record that i'm a bigger fan of than the other... unfortunately i don't remember if it's a or b)

Screw you iDi*the*elder... screw you! You will like what I like!

Eh, "Arm of the Lord" is pretty awesome, though.

My Life in the Bush of Ghosts is not bad, but it doesnt make Eno's top 10 in my opinion. Last time I listened to it I thought it just sounds too dated. For strange "transmissions from another planet" type stuff with a beat from the early 80s, I'll take Cabaret Voltaire anytime ...

i'm glad their shit sounds good.... i was worried the rapture would let dfa take over and forget that they kick a certain amount of ass on their own....

... echos was good, but it's one of those albums where you worry about them going to far up their own asses...... i mean, the band was 3 dudes, then it's 5, then it's 5 and a production team.... i'd like to see them get back to the basics a little more... i don't mind the electronic production shit, but that's not as important as the bands input

copy and paste that thing above, and listen to the song streaming via some podcast. It was the best I could find.

Pretty damn good song though. This has me excited about the new Rapture album.

Yeah. And it was on Pitchfork the other day and some other blogs before then, but "it has been removed at the request of the artist" at all the ones I've tried.

Wow, I had no idea so many others knew about "My Life..."! Tres bien. Eh, maybe I'll just buy the reissue since it has been years since I've seen my CD of it. Sad.

JAMO... you must remember, when that album was released it was like a transmission from Mars in most areas of the country, so it became a cult classic of sorts. It is great that someone like yourself is so into it and regards it as a classic album - this gives me continued faith in the future of DFW music.

Scott Hop - Dude, stop clogging this board with your shameless self-promotion. Surely, everyone is so psyched for:

Band Of Horses is a total grower. I called "MMJ/Shins" bullshit on 'em as well when I first heard the songs, but after three listens, I'm hooked. Also helps that they killed at SXSW. Or maybe I'm just an old coot. Who knows.

jamo says..4:43 PM

I wasn't really talking about the record's availability at used bookstores, just this reissue. I don't really understand why they are treating it like some sort of lost gem. It's always been a great album.

Funny. I bought My life in the bush with ghosts on vinyl at recycled records about 10 years ago. Recycled always did have a lot of good Eno on vinyl. I think I have picked up at least 8 other Eno records there over the years. Never paid more than 4 bucks. I miss that place.

jamo says..11:28 PM

I don't know why people are suddenly recognizing an album as influential as my life in the bush of ghosts. long overdue.

I agree about the Band of Horses thing.
Maybe it's that I just don't care.
Yeah, I said it.

And that's coming from the guy who likes a few crap-a-roo bands too.
